Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

Well, shoot, the freakin' name doesn't mean jack-squat. But, I'm sure you know this..what matters is the ingredients. They could call it Magical Nose Ointment and it would still do the same thing.:)

you can call it whatever you want but it still not going to prevent you from catching a virus :lmao:

Its an antibotic which will kill bacteria such as staph and strep ~ influenza is not killed off by rubbing your entire body in neosporin :rotfl2:

Is it going to kill you if you stick it up your nose? not unless you suffocate yourself with it ... but its not going to keep you from catching the flu :rotfl2:

I live in Brazil and I'm going to Orlando in two weeks with my boyfriend (we're both 18) and his parents. We're gonna be there for 15 days, we already have the plane tickets and have booked (and payed for) the hotel (Port Orleans Frrench Quarter!!).

I don't want to cancel or postpone the trip, but my parents are worried 'cause the news here in Brazil say you should avoid going to Mexico (specially) and U.S.A.. I'd like to know how is the real situation there. I know there are no confirmed cases of the flu in Florida, right?

Should I cancel the whole trip because of the flu? Is it as bad as they say on tv? Does the Health Department has it under control? :confused3

Oh the POWER of the media....

CNN reported that 36,000 people in the US died from the REGULAR flu. Yet I did not see one thread on here saying "Should we go"?

150 people die in Mexico and PANIC sets in LOL!

Check back in 2 days to see if Orlando has any cases. The jury is still out on that! :)

Ok, I will!! If they confirm the flu in Florida my parents will totally freak out! I hope it's nothing :sad2:
(By the way, I read your trip report some time ago and loved it!! :goodvibes)

Aw! Thank you!

All really great Mommas worry...but you really will be fine! :) Just take the normal precautions and you guys should be fine! :)

There are so many people in WDW...just think of how many DON'T have the flu! Or a stomach virus or anything else! Most of the people you run into will be very healthy and having a great time.

And...I do bet your crowds will be a little less than they were going to be...let their fear give you an even more magical trip! :)

The Orange County Health Department said they are looking at multiple possible cases in the Central Florida area. They will not get confirmation on any of the cases until tomorrow night. In the meantime, they have asked the individuals to stay home and away from others. They are trying to contain any possible infection.

You're right :) I'll just have to buy some hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and all that stuff. It's kind of expensive here in Brazil and not easy to find! Unbelievable :confused3

Thanks for tranquilizing me and mom! :rotfl:

I appreciate this thread, I thought everyone was trying to avoid the subject, especially since the Monitors didn't even bring up the subject.

I am glad to hear all the advice about NEOSPORIN, 60 percent alcohol sanitizers, Lysol spray, etc.

If anyone could please explain how to sanitize the room properly upon arrival, I would appreciate it. How does one sanitize the bed comforter? I really have no idea? Do you just spray Lysol Aerosol on it? Anyway to avoid a hospital room smell ? What are the best WIPES to use on the room, the person? I appreciate your advice ! It would be nice to have a list of what precautions to do for your Disney Trip.

Thanks, Phil

You are very welcome! Maybe you could get the sanitizer stuff when you get to Orlando? I bet someone close by will certainly be selling some! :)
I recommend Lysol spray, too. For the room. :thumbsup2

My poor boy (well man really - he is 18) has NEVER been this sick. Fever, body aches, sore throat, vomited at the 48 hour mark, and a cough that just wont quit. The dr. said (Wednesday) it was bronchitus and a sinus infection.....5 days later and he is still coughing his lungs up and this is with being on antibiotics for 5 days, oral prednisone and an albuteral inhaler.

Its been 9 days and I cant wait to get him back to the Dr. tomorrow.......

That's exactly what I have, without the vomiting. I went through the same course of treatment, and it didn't work. Went back to the doctor yesterday and she prescribed stronger antiobiotics, more steroids and an inhaler. She also told me to take OTC Mucinex DM. I have another appointment next Monday...hopefully it works this time around.

I'm just now watching the local news (Austin), 17 school in Texas are closed, with a couple close by that are closing until May 11.

I was just on the Orange County Health Dept. website and it didn't say anything about asking people to stay home and away from others nor did say that they were looking at multiple possible cases in Central Florida. :confused3 Am I missing something here?

bacitracin- no will not prevent viruses only bacteria as it should. Prevention is the key for this- good handwashing, use your alcohol based hand creams, stay away from those that are sick. I have told my kids to not touch anyone at school. use their hand sanitizer frequently thru the day and wash their hands.. Thats the best they can do and I hope the schools are taking extra precautions and wiping down tables and chairs. Mine were very sick with the influenza virus in Feb. Both were out of school for 8 days and the sickest I have ever seen them. They hadnt been to the doctor at all the previous year except for the yearly checkups.. its the dehydration, underlying infections like pneumomia or sinus infections that they end up been treated for.. so its not just a simple thing that will be over and done in a week. we did change our weekend plans that involved large crowds. I didnt let my daughter travel to seaworld last week and hopefully the other kids didnt bring the virus back to this county.. only time will tell..

I just bought some little bottles of Walgreen's brand hand sanitizer it is 62% alcohol and I will also be getting some Lysol spray and Lysol also makes wipes that I'm going to get. I will put a few in a baggie for the plane and use the rest at the hotel along with the spray. Someone also suggested Kid's Sani wipes.

I have no idea about the bed comforters and sheets, ect....anyone else know?

I always bring the hand sanitzer gel on trips to begin with, adding Lysol spray is new for me. This kinda of thing normally doesn't bother me, but I just don't want to get sick WHILE I'm there and then not be able to get home and have to be sick there.

If you go back and read my post, I never said it would kill influenza. I was responding to what the other person said about it not being used in surgery anymore-which is wrong info. I also mentioned that it is used for MRSA and I also stated that I'm aware MRSA isn't a virus. Like you said, it certainly won't kill you if you put it in your nose. This fact is obvious, since it is used for MRSA..my main issue was that other person stating erroneous facts about Neosporin poisoning your bloodstream when used in such small amounts.

All I really ask is that people take time to read and comprehend posts before responding...but I get the feeling that on here, it's a lost cause.

And OT..I'm not saying this to be snarky, but what's with the same smiley at the end of every sentence?

I live in a small suburban town halfway between San Antonio and Austin Texas. We have just been advised that both of our local and rural school districts are closed Until May 12 due to Swine Flu possible cases. My neighbor works at health dept and they said the local Pediatricians office is overrun with suspected cases. Don't know if this is overreaction on Health Dept but they are basically homebounding all parents of school aged children. If I thought that this would definitely prevent the spread of this I would be for it 100%. I don't know whether to be alarmed that so many of you aren't alarmed or feel as though everyone in the medical field is overreacting needlessly????

Anyway, I just want to be safe and healthy and I want that for my whole family. We have a trip planned in June, hopefully all will have died down or be contained by then. Everyone keep yourself safe you don't know how quickly this will spread and I just don't want a situation where we're all exposed before we even know it!!

They interviewed the head of the Orange County Health Department on the local Orlando news. I just saw it.

Gosh...I don't know the answer to this. I have learned from this thread that you should use an alcohol based hand sanitizer and that washing with soap for a while is the best way to protect yourself. But not sure about cleaning a room. I would think Lysol wipes? Maybe the kind with bleach? I would not even use the bedspread. I would bring a blanket from home.

The chances of you actually using a room from someone that was sick is very, very low! So low that I would not worry about it as much as just washing my hands often in the parks. Monorails, rides, lines...those would make me more nervous.

But you should be fine...if you are just careful. :)

Have a great time on your trip!! Maybe the crowds will be a little lower! :)

I am quite interested to see how this flu plays out.

I'm planning on buying the "anti flu kit" on the first day! :rotfl: hand sanitizer, wipes, lysol spray (i'm writting this name down!!), and maybe those masks, just in case, you know!!
But I'm sure it will be great!! :yay:
