Swine Flu - General Discussion and how it affects Disney

I don't worry about stuff like this. :)

And...just because I am that girl, I always use hand sanitizer.

Since this works like any flu virus and can travel by air you would also need a mask. See the pictures of the residents of Mexico City wearing their masks in public.

Everyone needs to stay calm. Remember SARS? That had the potential to be a far worse situation because it was a bacteria that was resistant to even the strongest antibiotics. It had a very high fatality rate. Eventually it fizzled out after everyone began taking precautions.
At least so far with this swine flu in the U.S., cases have been mild and it is responding to anti-viral medications.
Keep in mind the 24 hour news channels need people to stay worried so they keep tuning in to their stations for breaking news. In my opinion, they are feeding the fear.
Just use your common sense: If you don't feel well, drink fluids, rest and if you are running a fever or get worse, see the doctor.
Keep washing your hands and cover your mouth when you sneeze and cough.
I believe it will be okay and usually I am a very anxious, pessimistic person. :flower3:

I agree :)

We aren't worried. If it does become a serious pandemic, then we might change our tune, but the Bird Flu pandemic a couple of years ago came to nothing and this will probably be the same.

I wondered how long it would take hysteria to break out on the DIS. As usual not long at ALL!

However, since I am going in a few weeks I think everyone should stay home! I mean why risk your family. Of course staying home means JUST that. Don't go to the mall, don't send the kids to school, camp, sports practice, don't go to work, do NOT leave the house. That should protect you from Swine Flu (and life, but....)

As for me, I am getting on a plane tomorrow and flying to TEXAS (GASP, the risk LOL!) and I am not really worried. I have read and seen what's on the news. I also work in healthcare. I just measure the risk and IMHO hysteria is not yet called for!

Exactly! Same thing with MRSA. It was a huge and everyone freaked, but as soon as precautions were taken everything settled and was fine. I refuse to panic until absolutely necessary.

If the drunk in POTC isn't worried about swine flu, I guess I shouldn't be, either.

SARS was a virus not a bacterial infection.

MRSA is still a VERY big deal ( trust me the hospitals have tons of cases) you just don't hear about it as much.MRSA is a bacterial infection that is resistant to Methicillin which was once the drug of choice to fight Staph aureus infections, we have developed stronger antibiotics but try not to overuse them to avoid resistance further.Viruses ,like Swine Flu are difficult because there really is no "miracle cure or drug" Antivirals help to an extent but only if received early enough.

I'm not saying it isn't a big deal - I know someone highly succeptable to catching it, so I've seen how scary it is. I'm just speaking more to the hysteria that broke out because of it. In our area especially people started acting like we needed to go in to hiding. I think it's worth giving the Center for Disease Control a chance to do its job and just continue to be aware of the situation.

I'm just relieved that Porky Pig is a Warner Bros. character and isn't skulking around WDW!!

We just had a confirmed case at my kids school this weekend. Don't know who it is, but I got a voicemail from the superintendant confirming it. They just said that if your child has any flu like symptoms to take them to the ER right away...not too much else. I guess we will find out more later. I live in NE Ohio.

I saw they had 1 case of swine flu in Ohio. What grades is the school? Is it a high school or little ones?

The reason I am asking is I have concerns there are many more cases out there that have NOT been confirmed by the CDC just yet. Every single person in the US that the CDC has reported has already recovered from it ~ so by what they say there is nobody actually sick with it right now as everyone is all better :lmao:

I wonder how many have the flu and are suspected of having the swine flu but are waiting for the tests to come back which takes about a week.
