sweet 16 parties -- my neighbro just floored me

The school that my older two attend is about 40% Jewish and so many non-Jeiwsh kids have larger than normal 13 birthday parties.

what I'm finding is that the Jewish kids have bar and bat mitzvahs, and the non Jewish kids have sweet 16 parties.

dd is going to an "ordinary" birthday party tonight. a bunch of girls at a sleepover.

A friend's granddaughter had a Quincienera. Neither of us had ever heard of this before, and it was fascinating. I couldn't believe how huge and elaborate this can be. It easily cost as much or more than a wedding.

My DD's had Sweet 16 parties. I rented the firehouse for one and a Knights of Columbus hall for the other. We had over 100 kids attend.

What kills you is that they don't eat! My DD warned me about this, but, being Italian, I had to have enough food to feed an army.

Our neighbors (and good friends) are having a Quincienera for the daughter over 4th of July weekend. My daughter is standing up in it, and they are going to bridal shops on Monday to choose the dresses. My friend estimates that it will cost between $8000-$10,000 for this party. I'm actually really excited about it. I've never been to one so it should be interesting. They have another daughter who is 13, so they have less than 2 years to save for another party. The only thing is, I have no clue what is expected as far as a gift goes. I'm assuming you give like you were going to a wedding since it's at a fancy banquet hall.

MAC3, fortunately, my friend is paying for the whole thing. I can't imagine hitting up your guests to pay for it!

the caterer for dd's bat mitzvah told me he charges one price for the adults and a lesser price for the kids, and prepares a more kid-friendly menu for the kids. that seems to be the norm around here.

but every time dd goes to one of the parties she can't tell me what was served. she's too busy to eat!
