SW Cancellation Policy - Using RR points

Hi all, I recently received the SW 50,000 points for opening a CC. I am looking to book 2 round trip flights in December, however, I'm not 100% sure I will be able to take this trip. If I were to book the flights with my points and then cancel, would those points go back into my bank of points that essentially dont' expire OR is it like any other booking in that they would credit me for the flight and I would have to use them within 1 year? Does anyone know?

The points go back into your account and as long as you add points to your RR account (such as keep using your credit card now and then), they will never expire. I think that's one of the best benefits of the new system. We like to take friends but now that travel funds cannot be shared, if they cancel I would be out the money since I could only get travel funds in their name. Instead I can now use my RR points for their travel and not worry if they cancel.
