SW awards booking question when not available

Anyone have any experience, after finding out the date you want is sold out of award seats, becoming available again?
We'd like to fly on Dec 22, but it looks like we'll have to buy our air, rather than use awards.

Take a look at flyertalk. Posters seem to find inventory frequently opens up a few weeks in advance. BUT you're asking about Christmas time. JMO but I suspect SW will find enough passengers willing to use "freedom" award tickets to fill all the RR seats that may be offered.

Do the math. It may be better to use "freedom" awards one direction and pay the other.

I actually only need one direction. I already got the other direction. But I may just pay and save my awards. I don't want to wait til a few weeks in advance, as the price I"m sure will only go up.

I didn't word my post properly, I wouldn't wait. I suspect enough passengers will be willing to use a freedom award.

My question is answered..Christmas Eve day opened up with a standard reward and I grabbed it. Thanks Lewis for the info.

Now I can leisurely wait to see if we can get the 22nd or 23rd. If not, hello Disneyland.
