Survivor 34: Game Changers

Did anyone else yell at their TV for Mikayla to just look down?! She lets her anger get to her and it stops her from playing the game. She has been there done that if you get separated you look everywhere on your little island until the comp is up.

I was so glad to see Debbie go. It was a blindside to her and that was what made it work. I think since they are all returning players who have played pretty hard before they are starting to get a little too cocky. A 6 does nothing for you when it is 5 and 6. Too easy for 1 to swap. That's where Debbie made her mistake. Everyone knew their pecking order and well the bottom was smart and flipped to be the top of the new 6. It will be interesting to see next week.

Yes, I did too!! Glad Sarah spotted it (and nobody wondered why she was swimming over to the loner platform?!?).

I love it when cocky players who think they're in control of the game get blindsided. I also loved Zeke's face when they showed him holding up his vote for Debbie!!

Nope first time they all flew; it was great just watching their expressions. I'm sure their giddiness had nothing to do with the reward they were about to experience.

First time? So they swam to the Fiji Islands? :p

It looked like the boat pulled up alongside the platform, so it probably looked like she was swimming there to board.

Glad Michaela's petulance cost her the advantage. And I'm almost certain she was eating coconut at tribal, not popcorn.

I am liking Sarah, Cirie, Andrea, Michaela, Aubry. Don't mind Troyzan as he is almost invisible but he is with those I hate so I don't know how much to root for him. Plus we see no social or mentel gameplay from him. And for Sarah and Michaela...I wouldn't like either one in real life. They would both bug me to spend any length of time with but I like them on this show/game. I would prefer a Cirie and Aubry in F3...with probably Sarah since she is playing hard. Michaela is just not good at the social and mental parts and they just won't give her a chance to help in the physical. Don't know why Cirie wouldn't pick her since they are in cahoots. Maybe she didn't want folks to catch wind that she's working with Michaela.

Finally!!! So glad she's gone and I loved that it was a blindside. Happy we don't have to see her smug mug anymore, or hear her talk. Good riddance!! :)
I was hoping it was her especially since there really wasn't any talk that I remember of who they were going to vote for, just Sarah asking Cirie if she thought they had the numbers. Debbie took being voted off really well.

She has played the game before and everyone knows to check around all the area for advantages especially when you're the only one sitting on a bench while everyone else is busy with the challenge...sheesh...she deserved not to get it and bravo to Sarah for keeping her eyes open.
I would have been looking everywhere, not necessarily for a clue or anything but just to look. For Sarah to have spotted it, I'm surprised no one else did.

Feel so sorry for the two at Ponderosa. I bet they were thinking 'thanks a lot guys'.
I was thinking the same thing. Now they have to listen to her for what, 27 more days?

I can't believe Mikayla missed the clue, but that's her own darn fault. I know she's not popular in the tribe, and it's unlikely she'll win, even if she makes it to the end (probably as a goat). But, I like her. We were cracking up at her during tribal--where did she get the popcorn? That was hysterical!

And I want to say, good for Cirie for conquering her insecurities. I also was very impressed with the way Sarah, especially, was right there with her. My opinion of Sarah really went up last night.
I'm pretty sure it was slices of coconut just by the way it fit into her hand. Someone on the tribe had made the comment about how much she eats but if she if going to get the coconuts then she can have what she wants.

I've always liked Sarah, even when she played before.

He face was priceless!

From what I saw last week, Cirie doesn't want anyone to know that she and Mikayla have an alliance. I imagine she didn't pick Mikayla for her team because she knew that it would get the reaction that it did especially when she wasn't picked for the other team either. Cirie is good at the game, they better watch out.

Either that's the way she is or she is edited that way. Some people are just angry all the time, that's their personality.

Yup....each episode covers 72+ hours of "clock" time, and they have hundreds of hours of footage. Take out challenges, and tribal council, they are left with only a little bit of time to fill in each show. They are telling a "story" with each contestant. For whatever reason, they've decided that Michaela is going to be portrayed as "angry." In any 72 hour period, I probably have a few minutes where I'm not at my cheerful best. If they decided to JUST show those minutes, you'd get a completely inaccurate view of me. I remind myself of that all the time. It's a story. They choose film which fits the story.

So glad Debbie is gone. I cheered when she got voted out. So cocky and so annoying. I think Sierra should be the next to go as she also thinks she is controlling the game. I really would like Cirie to win. She is a good player and doesn't try to outright control the game.

One thing I've noticed for a few seasons and has just started to bug me for some reason..

How does the show get away with all the clear cutting it does every season? They need a huge playing surface for the challenges and when it's not in the water it's always in a field or the middle of the forest. I'm not a nature freak but it still seems like such a bad idea.

Maybe they donate a bunch of money to the location or replant trees when they clean up the area.

Does anyone know?

Yes, they do donate and clean up after production. I remember reading it, years back--they use employ local workers when possible, donate to local schools and charities, and leave it nicer than they found it. I suspect they also use, as much as possible, clearings and locally available materials for their challenges. So, they might take a rough clearing, clear-cut it, use the trees in the challenge, set it back to being a clearing, and use local labor to do all this. My understanding is that the islands not only give permission, but are glad to see the Survivor crew, since it helps them out so much.

Originally, the tiebreaker was as follows:
All of the castaways EXCEPT the two who are in the tie get to vote a second time. If the vote ends in a tie again, then it goes to a discussion and the tribe has to decide, unanimously, which of the two goes home. If they can't decide and it's deadlocked, then they draw rocks. All the castaways - except the immunity holder and I believe the two who were voted for (they become safe) - draw rocks and the one with the odd rock goes home. I THINK.

This year they're doing the tiebreaker differently. If there is a tie, there will be no re-vote and they will go right to discussion to try to come up with a unanimous decision. Then I assume it goes to rocks if necessary.

I'm an admitted Survivor junkie and have watched every single season no less than 3 times each. (In my defense, I went through chemo and multiple surgeries in 2007 and 2008 so I had a ton of time on my hands and terrible long term memory...also, I love Survivor)

Ties have been dealt with in different ways over different seasons, like the show has evolved, so have the rules.

Season 1: as far as I know there were no rules for breaking ties and the tribe would have to keep voting until the tie was broken.

Seasons 2 and 3: Ties were decided by previous votes against which is one of the reasons why in Africa it was a huge deal when the tribe switch happened, if it was known who had votes cast against then strategic voting could occur.

After that, ties were dealt with by first a revote with the tied people not voting. After that, if it is still a tie then they are considered to be deadlocked. At this point, the people who do not have tied votes have to unanimously agree or draw rocks...unless they are at the final 4. Final 4 deadlocked votes go to a fire making challenge. Also, there has been one time that a firemaking challenge was used instead of voting. In Palau when there were only 2 people left on the Ulong tribe.

As a side note, the funniest (saddest?) fire making challenge was final 4 for Cook Islands. No one know for sure how long it went on for but it was close to 2 hours and when the producers finally gave in and gave them matches, one of the players actually ran out of matches!

Survivor Funny 115 has a pretty amusing write up of this.

Oh, one last thing...most confusing tie breaker ever (IMHO) was the final 6 vote in Cambodia. Because of a combo of individual immunity and hidden idols, there were no valid votes. After a tied re-vote, Keith had a choice of either changing his vote or he would go home by default. (3 people with immunity, 2 people with tied votes against which leaves only one person to draw rocks.)

Well, there you go...everything you never really wanted to know about Survivor tie breakers.

I broke down and watched Debbie's Ponderosa. The best part was when she was sitting down to her first elimination meal with Ozzy and Hali. She told them she wouldn't had minded losing to Ozzy but he'd then have to sleep with her one time. Ozzy had a look of 'ruh roh' on his face. Then the rest of the Ponderosa was Debs and Hali (Debs and Survivor Doc, Debs and Survivor helicopter pilot)...Ozzy nowhere to be seen, probably in hiding...LOL!!!

I too have not missed an episode of Survivor, and sadly, I have had cancer too! I laughed out loud when I read your post, because back in 2011 and 2012, I went through three surgeries and six months of chemo, and I too started re-watching old seasons of Survivor!!!! My husband bought me a bunch of DVD's of the complete seasons!!! It was a great way to pass the time laying on the couch!! It was so funny to watch the early episodes and see how simple the filming was!! Such a difference from now!

Wow, no thoughts yet on last night's show? I think it was smart to get out Zeke now instead of waiting. He was pretty much playing everyone and doing it well IMO. The longer they kept him, the harder it might have been to get him out. I was really surprised Sarah voted for him though. I did not believe she would.
