Survey for Research paper on Disboards!

Just so everyone is aware- I did receive permission to perform this survey!

Hello Everyone. I just wanted to let you know. I have created a survey for my research topic on disboards and the friendships created. Please take time (if you'd like to) to fill out the survey. You can either post the answers back on here, send them in a message, or email me at jenausty@gmail.com. Either email with work. Please -if you email me- include your username. I do not need your real name, or any personal information. For privacy reasons I'm only going to use disboard usernames. If you have any questions- or don't understand them- please ask. I'll clarify. Also, the more information you give- the more helper it will be for my paper. so if I ask you a question and you want to add more to the answer- then yes or no- please do include it. Again, thanks for all that take part in my research.

Survey- This study focuses on the Social Penetration Theory and Media Ecology in Communication studies- if you are interested where my study is based.

1.What is the main reason you post on disboards? A. WDW vacation information B. Friendships created. C. To share my love of Disney World with other fellow Disney fans.

2.Do you feel comfortable disclosing personal information about yourself on disboards?

3.If yes, what’s the deepest layer of disclosure (Choose a number or specify): 1. generalizations about yourself (college student etc), 2. Preferences (things you like, pets you have, sports), 3. Goals & Aspirations (life goals, your career goals), 4. Fears/Fantasies/Religious Convictions- Religious beliefs, abortion beliefs, what you’re scared of, financial problems), 5.Concept of Self- your true self- basically you feel comfortable revealing everything about yourself.

a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share.

4.Do you use any other blog/forum website as often at disboards to share reports and create friendships?

5.Do you feel that the friendships you’ve created on disboards are “real” friendships?

6.Do you feel a type of commitment or dependence with your friends on disboards? (Referring to the ones you associate with often). (For example, if it’s been a while and you haven’t been able to update your trip report or post on others reports- do you feel bad for not doing so, or feel like your neglecting those friendships?)

7.Do you feel the friendships created on the disboards are stronger than most blogs because of the core idea that brought us together (the love of Disney/Disney vacations)? (I know you all want to answer yes because we all love Disney, but please be serious with your answer.)

If I think of any other questions along the way- I will post them. Thanks again for your time- this is really creating a one of kind research paper and I'm extremely excited.
Once I have all your answers- I'll post the results at well.

Thanks! I actually posted it on 2 different locations. I'm hoping people will see it and take part! Thanks for your help!

Social Penetration Theory??? Hmmm. I all for that, I guess.

Anyway, here we go:

1. “A” was the reason I came here. I stayed to show my superiority in virtually all matters.
2. No.
3. Not applicable, due to my answer to No. 2.
4. Yes.
5. No.
6. No.
7. No.

1.What is the main reason you post on disboards? A. WDW vacation information B. Friendships created. C. To share my love of Disney World with other fellow Disney fans.
C!! The DIS is a great tool for planning but I come here mostly to chat with other Disney fans!
2.Do you feel comfortable disclosing personal information about yourself on disboards?
To an extent- I will disclose what part of the state I live in, my profession, the University I attended, etc. I have given my email address out before but that's the most info I've disclosed.
I'd say 4.
a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share.

4.Do you use any other blog/forum website as often at disboards to share reports and create friendships?
No.
5.Do you feel that the friendships you’ve created on disboards are “real” friendships?
I am certainly interested in keeping up with the lives of certain DIS friends. There are even a few I would consider vacationing with to WDW!

6.Do you feel a type of commitment or dependence with your friends on disboards? (Referring to the ones you associate with often). (For example, if it’s been a while and you haven’t been able to update your trip report or post on others reports- do you feel bad for not doing so, or feel like your neglecting those friendships?)
Actually, yes!

7.Do you feel the friendships created on the disboards are stronger than most blogs because of the core idea that brought us together (the love of Disney/Disney vacations)? (I know you all want to answer yes because we all love Disney, but please be serious with your answer.)
Yes but I think the same concept can be applied to other forums/blogs. A forum/blog for teachers, police officers, etc can create the same type of friendships.
Hope this helps!

Fears/Fantasies/Religious Convictions- Religious beliefs, abortion beliefs, what you’re scared of, financial problems), 5.Concept of Self- your true self- basically you feel comfortable revealing everything about yourself. I'd say I disclose bits and pieces of all these things at various times

a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share. I can talk about my interests, pets etc. but don't even metion word one about reglion or politics

1.What is the main reason you post on disboards? A. WDW vacation information B. Friendships created. C. To share my love of Disney World with other fellow Disney fans. It gives an interesting cross-section of people and ideas. Plus, I do a little vacation planning. Plus talking about Disneymakes me happy. :)
2.Do you feel comfortable disclosing personal information about yourself on disboards? to an extent, but there is some stuff I do not share

Fears/Fantasies/Religious Convictions- Religious beliefs, abortion beliefs, what you’re scared of, financial problems), 5.Concept of Self- your true self- basically you feel comfortable revealing everything about yourself. generalizations, certain preferences, certain golas, certain fears, religious convictions,
a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share. yes. I used to get into religion pretty well when we were able to discuss religion.

4.Do you use any other blog/forum website as often at disboards to share reports and create friendships? no. I check out a town-related one occasionally, but I am finding out that I don't much like too many people in my town!

5.Do you feel that the friendships you’ve created on disboards are “real” friendships? to an extent

6.Do you feel a type of commitment or dependence with your friends on disboards? (Referring to the ones you associate with often). (For example, if it’s been a while and you haven’t been able to update your trip report or post on others reports- do you feel bad for not doing so, or feel like your neglecting those friendships?) not really

7.Do you feel the friendships created on the disboards are stronger than most blogs because of the core idea that brought us together (the love of Disney/Disney vacations)? (I know you all want to answer yes because we all love Disney, but please be serious with your answer.) not really

Once I have all your answers- I'll post the results at well.

1.What is the main reason you post on disboards? A. WDW vacation information B. Friendships created. C. To share my love of Disney World with other fellow Disney fans.
I joined for reason A, but I post/lurk on the dis for hidden reason D: to give me something to read during downtimes at work!

2.Do you feel comfortable disclosing personal information about yourself on disboards?
To a certain extent. I used to be much more cavalier about it, and even went so far as to nonchalantly list my full name, but that makes me nervous now, so I stick to the basics.

I'm comfortable with 1 and 2. Have never had much of a reason to disclose 3, but it wouldn't bother me. I've learned not to touch 4 with a ten-foot pole, ;) but I am comfortable revealing my true feelings, if that's what 5 means (if 5 means disclosing my name, phone number, etc.,--which I guess would be more like a real-life identity--then no, I'm not at all comfortable with 5.
a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share.

4.Do you use any other blog/forum website as often at disboards to share reports and create friendships?
No. Am not even on facebook or twitter (oh, the horror, :rotfl:).

5.Do you feel that the friendships you’ve created on disboards are “real” friendships?
Am not close to anyone on the boards anymore. But when I was (on the weddings forum), the friendships were pretty real. Even hung out with a few people irl.

6.Do you feel a type of commitment or dependence with your friends on disboards? (Referring to the ones you associate with often). (For example, if it’s been a while and you haven’t been able to update your trip report or post on others reports- do you feel bad for not doing so, or feel like your neglecting those friendships?)
n/a for me, since I don't have close friendships like that anymore

7.Do you feel the friendships created on the disboards are stronger than most blogs because of the core idea that brought us together (the love of Disney/Disney vacations)? (I know you all want to answer yes because we all love Disney, but please be serious with your answer.)
The dis doesn't feel like a blog to me at all, so it's hard for me to compare. To me, a blog is something that I read to get the opinion of the single person who authors the blog, whereas the dis, as a forum, is open for us to post and reply ourselves. I think Disney helps draw people in (it's how most of us found the dis, obviously), but once you're here (specifically, the Community Board), the topics are wide and varied. I do think that we occupy a specific demographic though (possibly varied age groups/social backgrounds/family types but our income must be at least or above a certain level, if we both have computer access and make plans to visit the Mouse). Sorry, that got a bit off-track. :)

HTH!

1.What is the main reason you post on disboards? A. WDW vacation information B. Friendships created. C. To share my love of Disney World with other fellow Disney fans.
all of the above - i got here to plan a WDW trip (that i STILL haven't taken :headache:) and i've stayed because of the friendships created around a mutual love of Disney

2.Do you feel comfortable disclosing personal information about yourself on disboards?
for the most part, yes. i generally share my personal experiences without getting *too* detailed. i have very little shame in real life, as well, so that's probably why, lol.

3.If yes, what’s the deepest layer of disclosure (Choose a number or specify): 1. generalizations about yourself (college student etc), 2. Preferences (things you like, pets you have, sports), 3. Goals & Aspirations (life goals, your career goals), 4. Fears/Fantasies/Religious Convictions- Religious beliefs, abortion beliefs, what you’re scared of, financial problems),
4. i am an opinionated person, and very outspoken; again, in my real life as well.

5.Concept of Self- your true self- basically you feel comfortable revealing everything about yourself.
that's actually probably one of my biggest faults. i have ZERO tact and have real issues keeping secrets. It's been a BIG problem with some of my friendships, actually.

a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share.
i generally try to steer away from saying anything too controversial, anything that will cause too much drama. i've been warned once, that was enough!

4.Do you use any other blog/forum website as often at disboards to share reports and create friendships?
no...i used to post on CruiseCritic rather frequently, but that was when i was planning a cruise. People over there can be EXTREMELY nasty, and even a little snobbish. i think the whole "loving Disney" theme that's prevalent here with most posters honestly is indicative of a nicer, friendlier group (most of the time...:rolleyes1)

5.Do you feel that the friendships you’ve created on disboards are “real” friendships?
no, but i certainly care for a lot of people and am concerned with their wellbeing. i'd liken it to a work friend - not someone you'd necessarily hang out with in real life, but someone you're still fond of and talk to.

6.Do you feel a type of commitment or dependence with your friends on disboards? (Referring to the ones you associate with often). (For example, if it’s been a while and you haven’t been able to update your trip report or post on others reports- do you feel bad for not doing so, or feel like your neglecting those friendships?)
no...because i don't think i've been away long enough for that to happen. Facebook & the DIS are pretty much always open, even if i'm doing other things online.

7.Do you feel the friendships created on the disboards are stronger than most blogs because of the core idea that brought us together (the love of Disney/Disney vacations)? (I know you all want to answer yes because we all love Disney, but please be serious with your answer.)
like i mentioned, i really do think that having an appreciation for Disney is indicative of a certain type of person - we all believe, to some degree, in the magic. i'm not saying we're all "tra la la Life is BEAUTIFUL" types, and i've certainly seen plenty of nastiness here on the boards...i don't know what the classify the specific trait as, but clearly we're all a bunch of fun-loving people who appreciate a certain type of entertainment, and there's something to be said for that.

i was a Comm minor in college...loved it!!

1.What is the main reason you post on disboards? A. WDW vacation information B. Friendships created. C. To share my love of Disney World with other fellow Disney fans.

Main reason?? Now? Definitely B. :)

2.Do you feel comfortable disclosing personal information about yourself on disboards?

Not directly, but I do disclose personal info to people I get to know on the DIS.

Um...depends. Probably up to a 4...maybe even a 5...depending on the context.

a. Do you think it depends on the subjects and context? If you feel it varies and there are certain things you can talk about in deeper layers then others- please share.

It is now against the rules to talk specifically about religion - which is something I am passionate about - so I have to steer clear of that subject.

Finances/work, etc...I share on a pretty deep level. Some people on here know me in real life. I even have a couple of distant relatives that frequent the DIS. So I am fairly careful what I talk about on the forums.

4.Do you use any other blog/forum website as often at disboards to share reports and create friendships?

Yes - one other Disney Forum.

5.Do you feel that the friendships you’ve created on disboards are “real” friendships?

Definitely! I have met 5 families now in real life and correspond with them in real life. Definitely are real friends. These are people that I would tell my latest news and want to share with them what is going on in my life...definitely! But a lot of that is done off the boards - through email, Facebook private messaging, Skype or phone calls.

6.Do you feel a type of commitment or dependence with your friends on disboards? (Referring to the ones you associate with often). (For example, if it’s been a while and you haven’t been able to update your trip report or post on others reports- do you feel bad for not doing so, or feel like your neglecting those friendships?)

Yes.

7.Do you feel the friendships created on the disboards are stronger than most blogs because of the core idea that brought us together (the love of Disney/Disney vacations)? (I know you all want to answer yes because we all love Disney, but please be serious with your answer.)

Just because of Disney - no, not really. In my case it was in search of information about wish trips in particular and that suject brought people closer together and was very influential in how deep the friendships are.

If I think of any other questions along the way- I will post them. Thanks again for your time- this is really creating a one of kind research paper and I'm extremely excited.
Once I have all your answers- I'll post the results at well.

This is very interesting! Good luck to you!
