I just noticed this on Disney web site.I was looking through the dining plan and noticed "select Downtown Disney Restaurants may require a surcharge for certain entree items". This may have been there all along but I just noticed it and thought I would pass it along.

I used the plan...sat down...picked whatever I wanted......gave waitresses/waiter my card....ate...signed my name....waddled out of restaurant.

Hmmmm, I don't remember a surcharge for anything..believe me I order the most expense things off the menus at counter service and sit down.

We got...myself and DD (9 years old)

Table service per meal we received:
2 appetizers
2 entrees
2 beverages
2 desserts

Counter Service (adult portions)
2 combo meals
2 beverages
2 desserts

We ate at:

Cosmic Rays (C)
LTT(C)
Grand Floridan Cafe (T)
Concord Steakhouse (T)
Tusker House (C)
Flame Tree (C)
Donald Break (T)
Beaches (C)
Princess Breakfast (T)
Boma (T)
Rose n Crown (T)

and a few others but I cannot remember right now. Getting old...so if they are surcharging for certain items on the menu I didn't experience that. Lucky me!!!   I also didn't eat any meals at Downtown Dinsey. I would say don't use the plan at Downtown Disney....eat somewhere else so you can "maximzie" the value of your plan.

Happy eating!!!!!! :mickeybar

OP was refering to the Downtown Disney restaurants that may have surcharges. The restaurants you listed are not in DTD

Captain Jack's is the only DTD that's even listed. I guess some of the other DTD restaurants might be start participating if they're able to exclude some of the more expensive entrées.

I suspect some of the restaurants got tired of voucher customers ordering the most expensive entrée, particularly when the entrées were intended to be shared. Go back and read how guests were ordering in the Rain Forest cafe for example. The program works for the restaurants if people order normally. The program won't last under the present form if everyone goes to the most expensive restaurant in the category and choses to only order the most expensive entrées on the menu. I don't have a problem if there is a small list of entrées (such as lobster) that has a surcharge. I would have a problem if the list of entrées without a surcharge was the short list.

I know that that is why I said

I can read!!!!!!
I noticed you left that out of your copied post...want to make sure you didn't miss it. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I agree Lewisc, The potential is there to go to the most expensive restaurant and order the most expensive items on the menu every day of your stay. I looked at Cap'n Jacks menu and figured if a family of four ordered the most expensive items, the bill would go over $200. easy. $200. x 6 days=$1200. just for sit downs alone. The plan won't last if everybody did that.

We'll see a lot more restaurants go to signature and surcharges on expensive entrees if people start trying to "work the system" the way some people worked the voucher program.

I'm referring more to some of the previous voucher posts but I'm amazed how many people were picking restaurants and entree choices based on price alone. I'd think location of the restaurant and type of food people like should count for more than just the price of the food. Pick the restaurants based on where you're going to be and pick the food you like and everyone wins.

Sorry but I don't think maximizing the dollar value of your purchases should be your primary goal. First pick the location that corresponds to where you want to be. If you're going to be seeing Cirque than a DTD restaurant makes sense. Can you get entrée choices that you like without paying a surcharge? Then don't sweat it. Is the surcharge reasonable? Perhaps a non-signature restaurant should charge extra for surf and turf. Many restaurants with a Price fix menu charges extra for some entrées.

There isn't, currently, a contest to see who can get the most for the money.

However, we all know that Capt Jacks is the only restaurant available - if its going to cost me more (surcharge) to eat at that restaurant than I originally paid...I am not going to eat there. There is always the option of eating before you get to Cirque.

I am sure the OP wants to get the most value out of their hard earned money. Again...I was just giving my opinion that maybe eating at Downtown Disney on the MYW plus dining is not the best option.

That's what this board is all about ....... a bunch of "opinions." Most poster's come to these boards to look for ways to save money. Look at how many post are about "CODES". Discount codes to save "money." So again, Capt n Jacks might not give the OP the most value for his hard earned money. If he choose to eat a Captain Jacks and pay the surcharge "good."

Lighten up ....this board is too serious!!!!!

Remember OPINIONS are like butt holes - everyone has one!!!!

Agreed it's about opinions and I may not have worded my post right. Since Disney talks about DTD restaurants (plural) I assume they are trying to add some additional restaurants. The quote says the surcharge may be added to some menu items.

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to make a decision to automatically exclude restaurants that haven't even been added yet based on some unspecified surcharge on an unspecified number of entrées.

A surcharge on an entrée or appetizer that was clearly intended for multiple guests is fair. I can even understand a surcharge on one or two expensive items such as lobster or surf and turf. Price fixed menus, cruise ships and all inclusive resorts frequently charge extra for lobster and other expensive items.

People are entitled to their opinions and will make decisions based on what works for them. I just can't understand people making decisions before any details are available.

I disagree with your reasoning. With this particular plan, it is easy (and fun) to plan your activities around some of the restaurants you may not have normally frequented without the plan. It sounds like you are being critical of people for maximizing the value of the plan. Its a great plan, and a good value--something that you don't often see at WDW. I say use it for all its worth and enjoy it!
