Supervising children ages 2 to 72 while running a Half Marathon! *update 3/5*

I agree about pics in Chef Mickey's! My dslr struggled as well and I can't imagine what a regular point and shoot would have taken! It's pretty dark in there when it comes to photos and I normally won't use flash, it washes everything out!

That was a busy check-in day, but sounds like lots of fun. The Chef Mickey photos are great, especially all of the ones with Mickey and Minnie. Those two rodents know how to work a group! Love the one with your dad waving!

We have only been to CM for breakfast a couple of times.

I love seeing the MK fireworks from the Poly- I did that for the first time this year. Really hassle free.

Hope all goes well with TSM tomorrow. Wonder what the TSM Dash looks like with a bunch of runners! popcorn::

Really busy, especially since we were up at 4am!!! My kids are pretty comfortable with characters now (good thing we go frequently to Disney because it took a while for my eldest!) and they know the drill. Jessica is the funniest with characters because she's SO comfortable. Donald returned to our table at one point and she looked at him and said, "What are you doing back here?"

Great Chef Mickey pictures! Fun way to start out your trip. I understand your pain with the whole buffet with kids thing. My kids are finally old enough they can carry their own plates so we can all get food at the same time. It is so much easier! I still prefer those character meals that are served family style though. It's just less stressful. I'll be impressed if you make DHS rope drop.

Nathaniel and Jessica can (and do) carry their own plates but not Zachary. And they get bored waiting in line for the grown up food. I just prefer for someone to bring me my food. I guess I'm a princess! :lmao:

My point and shoot photos from Chef Mickey are all grainy. It's not a bad camera but yuck! The DSLR photos are better.

Great TR!

Thank you!!!

Lots of crazy stuff going on in "real" life, some of which is keeping me off the computer! :thumbsup2

1. I'm signed up for the More Magazine/Fitness Magazine Women's Half Marathon in NYC on 4/3. I'm seriously thinking about running the full marathon next January. :scared1:

2. We're renting our house but have always wanted to buy it. The previous owner died about 5 years ago (I think?) at the tender age of 96. She never married and had no children. The house is in a charitable trust which is overseen by a trustee who lives in Colorado. There is a local lawyer who is our contact person (She's lovely!). We made a low-ball offer on the house about 6 months ago. In December they finally had an appraisal done. Yesterday we finally heard the results of the appraisal - more than we offered but not more than we're willing to pay. It's an older house (1928, I think) and needs lots and lots of work (original casement windows, no a/c, outdated electrical causes frequent power issues, very outdated kitchen and bathrooms, etc.). We're getting an inspection next week and then we'll start negotiations. We don't want to negotiate so hard that we lose the house but it's in their best interest to have us buy the house so they don't have to list it . And then we start the stress of trying to get a mortgage in this economy! And I've heard horror stories.... We're really excited. This is a great house. Old tudor with lots of character. 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths. Large rooms with high ceilings. We'll have to do some basic renovations now (update the electrical, for example) but we've lived here for almost 2 years and we know most of the issues.

3. Work has been insane! I'm working about as hard as humanly possible and my partner is going on vacation for 2 weeks in February. I will get killed at work! Luckily we're going away to Rocking Horse Ranch for 2 nights/3 days right after he returns. (We were supposed to go for 3 nights but Nathaniel threw the Wii remote at the tv set and broke our 2 year old 40 inch flat screen so we're using the $$$ for the 3rd night to buy a new tv).

4. Tentatively planning the next trip to Disney for August 27-September 3. We're booked in a one bedroom at BLT (for now ;) ). Tom is feeling a little Disney-ed out but I think that it's more that he didn't enjoy traveling with my parents. We both felt a little cheated out of our normal Disney routine. I'm also thinking about spending less time at the parks and more time relaxing in August (ex: a morning at the pool with an afternoon at Downtown Disney).

Wow! Full first day! My DH doesn't travel well so I've learned I can't try to do too much our first day or it starts off the trip all cranky and we can't have that in the Happiest Place On Earth.

:wizard:Good luck with the house!:wizard:

Our once a year family trips to Disney are a bit much for DH but not enough for me so I take the kids one at a time also. The family trips are really nice but the one on one trips are really special. I don't have any one on one trips planned with the kids this year and I don't know if we'll do a family trip this summer or not. I was thinking either BWI CL because we really enjoyed it there or AKL 1BR. We do less park time when my DH is with us. 2 years ago we did a fishing trip and he really LOVED that so we did that again last summer and I'm sure it will be a must do from now on to keep him happy.

Congrats for signing up for another half and wow for planning the full next year!:woohoo:

Thinking about going for the full! That is awesome! Running the full was the most fun I've ever had in a race, hands down. On the other hand, the training was just brutal. It was so incredibly time consuming. I have to say I found training for the full about 3 times as hard as training for the half. It is just a whole new level. You can definitely do it, you just need to be mentally prepared for how draining that training is.

The house sounds wonderful. I really hope you get it. We just live in a boring trac house in suburbia built in 1999. I would love to have a house with character.

:yay: for a summer Disney trip! I love summer trips. And some of the best days are the laid back pool days:goodvibes

Glad you guys had a good time at Chef Mickey's. :goodvibes We're early eaters anyway so we always get dinner ADRs for 5:00 or so (and that's later than we normally eat). The places tend to be much less crowded.

Yay for adjoining rooms! We had adjoining rooms when we stayed at Shades of Green with my parents. My oldest ended up sleeping in the extra bed in my parents' room (except one night when my dad was snoring loudly :rolleyes1 ).

Yay for another race and for possibly doing the full next year! :cool1: :cool1: And good luck with the house! Sounds like we're both in similar situations right now. :)

If our rooms had been ready earlier, we would have gone back to relax and change clothes before dinner. :confused3 We powered through pretty well, all things considered!
Thanks for the house wishes!
I would *love* to do a solo trip with each child. My dream is to take Nathaniel to a Star Wars Weekend, Jessica for a girlie princess trip (BBB, CRT, etc.), and Zachary for an age-appropriate Dumbo do-or-die trip. I don't think it'll happen but I can dream!

I looked at the Galloway training and it seems do-able. I'm using his training for my up-coming 1/2 and I'm able to do it. I like that the mid-week runs are short (30-45 minutes each) and then one long run on the weekend. I can do that. For the longer runs I'll have to wake up early so I don't mess up the day. In the fall it'll be even easier because both Jessica and Nathaniel will have Hebrew School on Saturday morning so I'll only have Zachary!

The house is great. I know I'll hate doing construction but we'll be a few years away from that (financially-speaking).

Tom hasn't totally agreed to the summer trip, yet. I made a deposit and I'd like to book the flights now, before the airfare increases.

I like early ADRs, too. I usually ask for sometime between 5:30 and 6:30. That's when my kids eat at home, too.
My parents offered to take one of the kids but the kids were happy to each have a bed in our room so it worked out. I could definitely see that we won't always need a one bedroom as the kids get older. We spent less time in the room than in the past and I'm sure that'll be more and more true!
I was reading your house hunting saga and laughing about how parallel our lives are!

Friday started early. Jessica and Zachary were both awake before 6am. This isn't shocking as they are frequently up that early and they had been up around 4am on Thursday. I let Nathaniel and Tom stay in bed. One advantage to staying CL - I could get the younger 2 dressed and take them up to the lounge while everyone else slept. The "breakfast" food wasn't yet set up in the lounge but there was cold cereal and whole fruit. The lounge also had kid-sized tables and chairs in front of the tv. The CM put on the Disney channel and my little ones were happy. I drank some horrid Nescrape coffee (to borrow a podcast term) and flipped through USA Today (not a quality publications!).
About an hour later (at 7am) the regular breakfast food was set out. The oatmeal was quite yummy! There were mini muffins, croissants, bagels, etc. Tom and Nathaniel joined us around 7 and we all ate something. Then we dragged the kids away from the tv :sad2: and went back to our room to pack up for the day.
We decided to only bring the single stroller since DHS is a smaller park and we were only really planning a 1/2 day. The diaper bag was re-packed and we were ready to go. We were at the bus stop by 8-ish and got to the park about 8:30. Rope drop was 9am. The kids did get a little antsy waiting for the park to open. :confused3 Our plan was for me to run and get FPs for TSM and Tom would follow with the kids and stroller. Nathaniel chose to join me. The biggest flaw with our plan was that my parents didn't come with us in the morning so we couldn't get them FPs. I also realized that all of our beverages (gatorade, water) was still in my parents' room. :rolleyes1
Nathaniel and I got some FPs for TSM and then debated the stand-by line. By this point my parents were on the bus to DHS. The stand-by line said 40 minutes but a CM said more like 20-30min. We decided that we'd still be in line by the time my parents arrived so we bailed.
Tom took us over to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. I told my parents to get FPs for TSM and then meet us. Honestly this was an annoying waste of arriving at RD. I was quite frustrated!!! If my parents had arrived later, we could have made good use of the early morning time.
I had also promised Jessica that we could watch Disney Channel Rocks! at 10am. We headed over to the Big Hat and asked a CM where the best place would be for Jessica to wait. She seemed a little clueless but we were right at the front. Jessica even got called up to dance with the performers. She was in girl-heaven!!!

It is immensely difficult to do a Disney vacation with others who don't have the same touring style as you do. We learned this lesson the hard way when we went with my Brother and his family. It was so frustrating! :confused3 It also doesn't help that my SIL is a huge control freak! My DS and I actually ended up defecting from the group for the last two days of the trip!:rotfl:

What an early morning! I'll be reading to see if you're ready to crash by 7:00!
We just happened upon the Disney Channel Rocks show on our trip, my 6yr.
got to go up and dance too.

Love the CL lounge! It is the perfect breakfast. You guys did a great job of getting to HS and TSM. What time was your FP return?

So fun for Jessica to be in the show! So she wasn't shy???:rotfl:

Too funny about her comment to Donald Duck. Did he have a response for her? I love that at the Cape May breakfast, the characters can communicate with you by writing on the table.

UGH...that would frustrate me to no end! I would have gone on TSM standby and let the parents wait a few minutes for me. Did they expect you to wait around for them?

That is why I love my one on one trips so much. I wanted to add that I started by taking my oldest for her 7th birthday and then took the others for their 7th birthday so I wasn't trying to get in all 3 trips in one year.

I love that at the Cape May breakfast, the characters can communicate with you by writing on the table.
When I was there for breakfast in July they didn't have the paper table cloths.:sad2: Don't know if they had just run out or no longer had them.

Totally. I thought they'd hang out at the resort longer so we'd have time for a ride.

I get up at 5:30am several days a week anyway. That's why my kids are early risers! I have to be at work at 7am 2-3 days per week, depending on my schedule.

Love the CL lounge! It is the perfect breakfast. You guys did a great job of getting to HS and TSM. What time was your FP return?

I'm realizing that staying CL is probably a good solution for us in the future. I think one more villa stay (this summer at BLT) for the extra space, kitchen, and laundry. The following summer maybe CL at BC. Jessica keeps asking to stay at BC again!
Our FP return time was 10:30am, I think. My parents got FPs with a return time around 1pm.
Jessica was a bit shy but she warmed up quickly. It's hard to remember that she isn't even 5 years old yet! She LOVED that she got to do it.
Donald actually walked away which was a little disappointing.

Nathaniel's 7th birthday is in 3 weeks so I guess that didn't work! :rotfl2: But I would love to take him for Star Wars Weekends - or have Tom take him. I think it would be good for them to go together and bond. Tom does better with the kids one-on-one.
I can't remember if we had paper table cloths in August. :confused3 I guess I should look at my pics! :thumbsup2

My Photopass CD arrived yesterday so I'll get us up-to-date on pics and then continue the report. There are some GREAT pics and some really, really mediocre ones. Not sure it was worth the $100 this time but I wanted some pics of my parents with us. Not that I'm expecting anything bad to happen any time soon but I realized as I made my annual holiday photo books that I was lacking in pics of the grandparents.

We "dragged" the kids away from the playground so Jessica could get to the Disney Channel Rocks! show. She was really looking forward to this. I made sure we were located front (and somewhat center) so she had a good chance of being picked to dance with the CMs.

She's the one in the polka dot leggings and striped jacket (it was quite chilly that morning!)

Great pics! Love the family reunion one at EPCOT.

They had the paper tablecloths on our visit in mid-July. This was for dinner. The waitress wrote her name on it.
