Supervising children ages 2 to 72 while running a Half Marathon! *update 3/5*

Oh I am really looking forward to reading about your experience. I am strictly a treadmill walker/runner but I am trying to motivate myself to:

1. Make the move off the treadmill and get outdoors (when it gets warmer)
2. Run a 5K this Spring
3. Sign up for the 2012 Disney Half Marathon!

I have never run a 5K, let alone a HM but I figure I have almost a year to start training. Was it hard to run outside after being on the treadmill? I love your C25K acronym - I can totally relate!!! :thumbsup2

The one issue I had with moving outdoors is pacing. I ran way too fast and burnt out quickly. I recommend running a known distance with a stop watch so you can pace yourself.
The C25K is an actual program. I wish I could take credit for it!

I know some people have an issue with it, but overall I found it much easier to run outside. I was sore the first time I did it because you use different muscles running on a treadmill vs. outside. And the downside was I started to strongly dislike running on the treadmill. Being outside is so much nicer (except when it's really hot or really cold). I also run faster outside than on the treadmill.

I totally agree that I ran faster outside!

Well you learn something new every day! I just googled C25K and also joined the FaceBook Group. Thanks, I am going to read up on it tonight! As soon as it goes above 35 degrees I may venture out...

Amanda!!!! I've been off the boards for a while (sulking) and here I come back and you have a TR AND run a half! WOOT! I cannot wait to hear all about it, I'm working on a 5K myself and I'm concerned about when I get back out on the pavement. I can go much longer distances already (since the last time I was running) and I think it's b/c I normally run outside and lately it's been on the treadmill. I think when it warms up and I go back outside, I'll struggle b/c I've been running at 5.0 all winter! :rolleyes1

Can't wait to hear about your trip/run! I'm off to see if they have any info on the 5K they usually have in October!!

It's a great program!!!! It helped me finally get my butt moving and allowed me to complete a 1/2 marathon!

Hi Karen! I'm so happy to see you back and I've got my fingers crossed that your trip becomes a reality! I did most of my training runs at 4.5 or 4.6 so you'll be in great shape!

UGH on the horrible check-in experience! I know what it is like when a Type A meets someone w-h-o i-s s-l-o-w a-s m-o-l-a-s-s-e-s. You just want to go back there and take over the computer yourself!

I'm sorry to hear that it was tough for your DM to get around. I guess it is a good thing you were there in the winter. Can you imagine during the August heat?

Before we had kids, we toured EPCOT with my parents one day. My dad was in reasonable shape, my mom is not active at all, and they both claim to this day that we were trying to kill them.

I look forward to hearing all about the race. As you know, the only racing my family has ever done is against the HS boats, and I am proud to say we are 2-2!

I've subsequently learned that using online check-in is a waste of time if you're staying CL. I guess I should have known that. But it still took her 5 tries to change my phone number in the computer and even then I never got a text message about our room being ready!

My parents came with us once in May (2009) and it was brutally hot and humid. Worse than last August. After 2 days of suffering (and I mean we ALL suffered), I convince my mom to rent an ECV. This time she wouldn't do it.

I'm here! And I can't wait to hear all about your trip (especially the race part!)

And I want to hear about your marathon!

I'm in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!popcorn::

Welcome!!!!

We took over 500 pictures (plus photopass) and I'm trying to edit them - especially the red eye. I'll start with a few...

So while Tom was collecting FPs, my parents and I started the (very) long walk to Italy. All of the walking at Disney has never really bothered me but I spend all day on my feet (and - more recently - have been training for a half-marathon). It was clearly going to be an issue for my mother. We were running a bit behind schedule (thanks to the s-l-o-w CM at Poly) and I wanted to get to Via Napoli for our ADR. But I needed to slow myself down. We made it!!!
We checked in and waited maybe 2 minutes for our table. We were seated near the entrance to the restaurant. We'd eaten here in August when it first opened and really like it. One thing I like about this restaurant is how friendly the service is. So accommodating and nice! Nathaniel and Jessica split a children's pasta (another advantage of the TIW card vs. the dining plan), Zachary had a cheese pizza, my parents and I split the delicious prosciutto and melon pizza, and Tom had veal parm. They have this deal where you can get salad with pizza for a few extra dollars. The salad is really good! And you can feel like you're eating something healthy at Disney World!!! :lmao: I also got one of their fresca drinks (I think that's what they are called). So yummy. I was also trying to drink a lot of water in preparation for my race.
The food was great, as usual. Tom arrived before we ordered. Unfortunately my step-dad got a work phone call right before our food arrived and he disappeared. This was a recurring theme. It annoyed my mother and delayed our meal (which is always a problem with young children). Overall I give the meal 2 thumbs up! I would definitely return here again.
After lunch it was time for a few rides. We came to realization that we weren't going to make it back to our rooms before our 5:30pm dinner. Which meant that we going to wear our same grubby airplane clothes all day. :confused3 What can you do?
We went to TestTrack 1st. We had 3 FPs but we could get baby swap, too. Tom chose to take Nathaniel and Jessica and leave me with Zachary and my parents. I thought it was an odd choice but I kept my mouth shut! While they were riding I went to MouseGear to find an autograph book. Tom and I have been talking about buying a Mickey pizza cutter so I bought that. I had told the kids that we were only buying ONE autograph book for all to share instead of 3 of the same thing. They were actually fine with this. Lesson learned! I bought this bright green 2011 book. Annoyingly it makes noise when you open it. Oh well! The kids were happy with it.
After Tom rode it was my turn. The nice thing about baby swap is that up to 3 people can use it. So I took my parents on TestTrack (leaving Tom with 3 kids - his choice!). My parents went to Disney several times with my youngest brother when I was in college and med school but they had never been on TestTrack. They liked it but felt a little disappointed (another theme - negative comments about everything!).
We headed to Mission:Space. I don't love the Orange side so I sent Tom and Popsie with Nathaniel. Jessica was finally tall enough to ride but I wanted her to try the Green side first. A nice CM at Mission:Space directed us to the indoor playground in the Advanced Training Lab. I didn't realize it was there! (You go through the exit of Mission:Space and past the gift shop and there is a hidden indoor playground there). Zachary wasn't too sure at first because it was noisy and dark but he eventually liked it. Again we used Baby Swap and my mom and I took Jessica. I actually liked the Green Side better than the Orange (I had only done Orange before). Jessica was a little nervous but loved it. We were 1st in line to go into the pre-load area. The CM was an older guy from Maryland who was SO nice. We told him that Jessica was finally tall enough to ride. He pulled her out of line, re-measured her, and made a big announcement that "Jessica is tall enough to ride!" and got everyone to clap. It was very sweet and cute. Jessica, of course, ate it up. She's a true Diva!
My mom liked Mission:Space fine but said she was perfectly happy to stick to the green side. She didn't love it or anything. My step-dad and Tom both felt a little sick after the orange side. I guess that means that I'll be taking Nathaniel on the orange after this. :rolleyes1
At this point it was pretty much time to head to dinner. I stopped at Guest Services to get Zachary a GAC and a stroller = wheelchair tag (which we only used once the whole trip - his walking and stair climbing are getting SO much better!!!). A nice CM at Guest Services gave Zachary a little balloon (the kind that you can turn into balloon animals although he didn't make an animal). It was very sweet but caused lots of fights on the monorail to dinner! :sad2:
My mom really struggled with the monorail up ramps. Tom found the handicap elevator for her at Epcot (we never found another) which helped a lot at the end of the day. We took the monorail to TTC, switched to the Resort monorail, and arrived a Chef Mickey just in time for our ADR.

In typical Amanda fashion I left a few things out...

After lunch there was a "street show" going on in Italy. It was a cute juggling act and we stayed and watched. The kids really enjoyed this. Then we picked up a Kim Possible mission for Mexico. As we reached Mexico there was a Mariachi band playing. They were quite good! Tom took Jessica and Nathaniel inside the pyramid for the mission while my parents and I stayed outside with Zachary. Donald the Duck was there - dressed in full Mexican regalia - but Zachary didn't want to see him.

I laughed when I read about how you had to slow down in the park for your mom. I'm always speed walking around as well. In fact the day after my marathon it was very strange because everyone around me was walking faster than me. That was a new experience:laughing: Bummer that you had to deal with negative comments from your parents. That is one of the reasons I wouldn't want to take certain people to Disney with me. I don't like complaining in my happy place! (I do take my kids though)

Via Napoli sounds wonderful! And I agree with you regarding TiW vs the dining plan. TiW is SOOOO much more flexible than the dining plan.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with negative comments from your parents. Disney is such a great place. It stinks when someone focuses in on a few flaws.

Yay for Jessica being tall enough to ride MS :yay:

We've gotten one autograph book for all of our boys to share on some trips, it's the way to go!

Isn't that Mission Space play area great! My boys love it.

That was cute what the CM did for Jessica. :goodvibes

Jenny-too funny about others actually walking faster than you! It took doing a marathon to slow you down.

Great update! It's cool that your parents don't mind the thrill rides like Test Track and Mission Space. How exciting that Jessica could ride. What a few short months (tall months, I guess) can bring.

M:S Orange! Really! I'm impressed. I haven't tried it, but after Mark and Ben's experience this summer , we will just rely on your review.

Yum on Via Napoli- I love having another dining choice in World Showcase. Do you know if they are equipped for takeout? We love coming back to our Beach Club room for a break with meals.

I'm sorry to hear that it was so difficult for your mom to get around.
