Supervising children ages 2 to 72 while running a Half Marathon! *update 3/5*

Great pics! Love the family reunion one at EPCOT.

They had the paper tablecloths on our visit in mid-July. This was for dinner. The waitress wrote her name on it.

I like that pic, too! The kids helped me add borders to the photopass pics.

Great pics!

We were there 7/24. Maybe they just ran out for a few days.

And I still haven't checked! :lmao:

Great pictures! I like the ones with the Epcot ball and the one of the HISTK playground. Photopass really is a hit and miss kind of thing. We always just take tons of pictures and figure at least some of them are bound to turn out.

After the show I realized we could make it to the Playhouse Disney show. My parents decided to go to Tower of Terror instead. Our timing was great! The show was just about to start. We've seen this endless times and I could honestly skip it but Zachary still loves it. Nathaniel tolerates it and Jessica enjoys it, although she would probably deny that! :thumbsup2 The show began and we got to the Handy Manny part when there was a technical problem. This is the 2nd time this has happened in this exact spot in the show. We've been several times but no more than once per trip so it must be a problem with the show. We waited out the delay and watched the show. During the show my parents tried to call me several times. This was quite annoying as I wasn't going answer my phone in the middle of a show!!! And they knew where we were!
Zachary was sitting on my lap and unfortunately had diaper failure during the show. My pants ended up soaking wet! As soon as the show ended I took him to the bathroom to change his soaking wet diaper. I then declared that I was buying myself some new pants! When I left the bathroom I couldn't find Tom or the kids anywhere and he wasn't answering his phone. I did run into my parents (I had texted them that I couldn't talk on the phone during a show and would they please stop calling!). We were going to head back to the "shopping district" when Zachary noticed some characters and insisted on seeing them!

It's funny because even at age 2.5, he totally "gets" the whole character thing. He wanted the autograph book, etc.

Tom had gone to retrieve our stroller (we left it in stroller parking at TSM when we 1st got FPs) and met me in the stores. The line for ToT was an hour so my parents didn't ride.
We wandered through some stores. I found a cute pair of lounge pants (really capris) that were super comfy. They cut the tags off as I wore them! Jessica got a rainbow headband. We then went to the store where they put your name on things. Zachary was obsessed with the Goofy hat so my parents offered to buy the kids hats.

ry%3D400

He liked Pluto, too, but settled on Goofy.

ry%3D400

Nathaniel picked Goofy also.

New headband!

Jessica got a princess hat but I can't find a pic right now. I looked and looked for pants for Zachary (his were dry at this point anyway) but couldn't find anything that I wanted to buy. So I gave up!

I agree. On a shorter trip I find it's hard to get enough photopass pics taken to make it worthwhile. My parents weren't that into it. Tom was good about indulging me. On our week-long trips we can easily get 100 or more pictures taken and then it's totally worth it!
I've also found that the best photopass pics ever are the ones at the resorts. In August we had an impromptu session on the beach at BC. There was a spectacular picture of the kids that we used for our holiday card. All of those pics were fabulous and, in my mind, worth the cost of the photopass CD. We had another session during this trip at the Grand Floridian (more on this later!) and those were the best pics.

Amanda

I forgot to mention that we chose to have the hats all embroidered with the kids' names on them and sent to our hotel. One advantage of staying CL is that you don't need to go to the store at your hotel to pick up your packages; they get sent directly to your room!

After our mini-shopping spree we headed over for our lunch ADR at the Brown Derby. I've always wanted to eat here and this seemed like a good opportunity. We had a short wait before we were seated. I didn't love the front desk people at this restaurant. :confused3 Not particularly friendly and I didn't really feel that my children were welcome here. We later ate at several other signature restaurants (I'll get there, I promise!) and this was the only place where I had that feeling. The first of the many complaints about how people were arranged at the table began at this meal. :sad2: Without any thought going into the seating, we ended up with: Nathaniel then Zachary then me the empty seat. Tom across from empty seat, Popsi across from me, Jessica across from Zachary, and my mom across from Nathaniel. So my mom (inadvertantly) was surrounded by children. Now my kids do pretty well at sit-down meals, especially since the kid menus were new for them at this point in the trip (they got repetitive later in the trip). Zachary can be a full-time job, although Tom has learned how to play Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on his phone.
Our waiter was lovely. I believe he was another one from Long Island but I may just be getting confused at this point. ;) He was very helpful and pleasant although a bit scarce. My parents and I all ordered the famous Cobb Salad. Tom doesn't eat pork so he got the lamb shank (which was both beautifully presented and delicious). We realized later that he could probably have gotten the salad without bacon - good for future reference. The kids all got whatever kid food appealed that day (I'm sure Zachary got chicken because he loves chicken). Zachary had at least 2 diaper changes (after my previous experience I wasn't taking any chances :lmao: ) and I took Jessica to the bathroom at least once if not twice. The food was great and the restaurant lovely but I'm not sure I'd return here again until the kids are older. Not because they weren't well-behaved but because there are other restaurants at DHS that are more fun for them.
My mom was pretty angry after lunch because she felt excluded. My step-dad tends to be clueless and I think if he had taken Jessica duty during the meal, my mom would have been fine. Also Jessica dropped her drink on the floor during lunch (a common occurrence for Jessica) and my mom insisted on getting on the floor and picking up all the ice cubes and cleaning up. :headache: And making a big show out of how she did all of that. As we were asking for the check, I looked in my "Disney wallet" for my Key to the World card. It wasn't there. I had the FPs for TSM, the APs, the kids' cards (Tom had his own), and even the TIW card. I thought I had paid for my pants with my debit card but now I wasn't sure. Since I have charging privileges on my room key, I was a little panicky. I went back to the store where I bought my pants and they didn't have it. They sent me to guest services. The woman there was fantastic. Super nice and helpful. She called the Poly to ask how they wanted her to handle the situation and she immediately printed me a new card. The only sad part was that it was blue instead of the special gold card you get for staying CL! ;) It was also an opportunity for me to vent, just a little, about my mom being difficult! :scared1: I returned to the restaurant, we ate dessert, and then left.
We headed over to TSM to use our FPs. It was a quick line and we finally got to ride. Remember, my kids weren't able to ride on our last trip because of the refurb. I love, love, love this ride. I had Zachary and Nathaniel with me so it wasn't one of my better performances but it was still fun! My parents seemed to enjoy it, too.

ry%3D400

Nathaniel took some of these pics.

ry%3D400

No more FPs!

We headed towards the bus stop to go back to the Poly. We must have recently missed a bus because we were the 1st ones there and it was quite a wait!!!

ry%3D400

Don't worry! We only let them swing the chain on the outside where there were no other people!

The bus ride home was a nightmare. 1st of all there was a family with 2 ECVs and more non-ECV people than Disney allows. I think they had one extra person. The bus driver decided to enforce the rules (I can't remember what the limit is on non-ECV people per ECV who get to "cut the line" but the family had one extra person and the driver made him get on the regular line). The bus was fairly crowded so we put the kids on a grown-up lap. Plus we had the diaper bag, stroller, back seat of the stroller, purses, etc. not a comfortable ride!
We stopped at the Contemporary and waited and waited and waited. Apparently the bus driver was waited for a manager to come deal with this irate family (the ECV family). Zachary fell asleep in Tom's lap, the other kids were getting antsy and this was turning into a very, very long bus ride after a fairly long wait for the bus. And I still had to get over to the Expo to pick up my race stuff! We finally got back to the Contemporary. Zachary was still asleep (in the stroller now). I had Tom sign his waiver and give me his driver's license and permission form to pick up his packet (he wasn't going to run but he still wanted his shirt since we had paid for it!).
Tom, my parents, and the kids went back to the room. Tom took the 2 big kids swimming (brrr!) while my parents rested and Zachary napped. I hopped on the bus to the Expo (it was a Mears bus similar to DME). I didn't have a camera with me so no pics from the Expo. I had never been to WWoS before. All I can say is WOW! The place is amazing. And the Expo was incredible. If I had traveled without children, I would have spent hours there!!!! I picked up my packet and then Tom's. I did the D-tag check (you wear this chip on your shoe that tracks you during the race and they have a place to check and make sure your chip is working properly). I bought a cool 1/2 marathon shirt (which cost more than I should have spent but I felt like indulging myself!). Then I went to the t-shirt pick-up area in the other building. It was like being in a very crowded flea market. There were booths set up everywhere with tons of people. The t-shirt pick-up area was pretty well organized, although they had run out of safety pins for the bib numbers. I grabbed a handful of safety pins and wandered around a little bit. I bought a $5 headband (I had been desperately looking for one to hold my front layers out of my face). There was SO much to buy but I didn't think it was fair to have my parents stuck with Zachary too much longer. I took the bus back to the Poly and was greeted by a very sad Zachary. He woke up confused and upset and having Nana and Popsie instead of mommy. Poor thing! (I think this is the evening that I gave Zachary a pre-dinner bath and he pooped in the tub but I've tried to block that out! :scared1: )
We got cleaned up for dinner and headed over to GCH for dinner at Kona. We had eaten there 3 years ago and liked it and I've subsequently read many good reviews. Not a typical pre-race meal but I figured I'd find something good to eat. We were seated pretty quickly (I think it was a 5:45pm ADR). Our table was in the back corner with a booth-type seat on one side and chairs on the other. Again the seating arrangement drama began. At one point Tom got so frustrated that he left the restaurant to go for a walk.
I chose an Asian noodle dish with shrimp. It was a great choice and fulfilled the pre-race pasta requirement. ;) My mom is pretty picky (nothing spicy at all) and ordered the tuna with the sauce on the side. The problem was that the tuna was crusted with something a little spicy so she scraped that off (and complained about it the whole time  ). I can't remember what everyone else ate. I just drank water although my parents had wine. We had paid for all the meals thus far but I think my parents insisted on paying for this one. Dinner ended up being fine. I was happy with my food. Then we headed back to the room to get ready for bed. We put the kids in their PJs and headed up to the lounge to watch fireworks.
There was already a decent crowd in the lounge but a nice family offered to let the kids sit on the floor in front of them so they could see better (I thanked them but declined because I didn't trust my kids to sit still!). The kids didn't really seem to care that much about the fireworks and got a little antsy. I was surprised since these fireworks are great! And my kids haven't seen Disney fireworks very often because they are usually already in bed.
After the fireworks we headed back to the room and got the kids in bed. I pinned my bib to my shirt and set out all of my clothes and necessities for race day. I called for a 3:00 am wake-up call and set my cell phone alarm, too. I took a quick shower and got ready for bed.
Surprisingly I was able to sleep some. Zachary woke up at 2:45 and I moved him into our bed and got him back to sleep. I figured this was my cue to get up and turn off the alarms!

That Expo is something else isn't it? They have everything a runner could ever want there, but it is so crowded! Can't wait to hear about the race!

You're so fast with these updates! Ugh about the diaper leaking and having wet pants. Glad you were able to find a pair to wear though.

Sorry you had some stress with your parents along. We've been to Disney twice with my parents. They're really good about going along with whatever we do, but it is harder when you have other people to think about.

Glad you were able to get some sleep! :thumbsup2

I am joining in and hoping to catch up...I have been TERRIBLE about getting on the dis lately, so I will do what I can!

Alright, I got caught up, the kids decided to take a nap at the same time! (A rare occurrence, I assure you)

Anyway, I loved it all so far, even though it seems really chaotic!

What a nightmare with security. We're flying on Friday and all we have here are the backscatter x-ray machines, so I'm having everyone opt out because I'm just unsure as to how to feel about them, and I am so worried that the TSA people are going to be screaming at us before I subject my children to a pat down. Security is just so hit and miss, it's hard to know what to expect.

On the plus side, what a wonderful place to be staying! I'm glad you enjoyed Via Napoli so much...we're eating there next week, because DH really wanted to try it!

They really should have photopass photographers at character meals. It would be wonderful!

Yay for Jessica being 40 inches! My DS is going to be SO close...he was 39 inches at the doctors over a month ago, and he has boots with thick soles and he has arch supports for them since he has flat feet and rolls his ankles in without them. He'll be fine if he's too short, but DH won't be! So cute that they made a big deal of it for her, I'm sure she loved that so very much!

Good luck with the house! It sounds like it should all work out for you!

It sounds like it was interesting travelling with your parents. It always is when you travel with others. We leave on Friday for a trip with my mom, my brother, my sister and her family. I'm sure it will be a disaster. (Good that I'm optimistic, right?)

Your new camera is amazing! What clear, beautiful pictures!

Diapers leaking is NEVER good. Very unfortunate. At least you got some new pants that you liked out of it, if there is an upside. Diaper leaking sounds better than the pre-dinner bath poop situation. Eek!

I can't wait to hear about the race! I am so very impressed, before reading any of it!

I'm on the edge of my seat!! I can't wait to hear about race day!!:goodvibes

Thank you!

It was crowded but it was really cool! I could have spent hours browsing. It was all so new to me. I'm sure after I've run a few races I won't be so impressed!

I had a little bit of time this weekend to update. Trust me, I won't always be so fast! :lmao:
The wet pants was annoying but I'm happy with my new pants. :thumbsup2
My mom was particularly annoying on this trip. I was surprised. The last time she came to Disney with us she was pretty awful, too. I think she gets frustrated because she can't keep up. :confused3

I totally understand!

We've generally had good experiences with airport security so I wasn't prepared for this at all!
When Nathaniel was too short, it wasn't a big deal because he's the eldest. It was harder when he could ride and Jessica couldn't.
Thanks for the house vibes!
I was surprised by how awful my mom was. In retrospect it shouldn't have surprised me but it did. :scared1:
Poor Zachary. Since he's a 3rd child we sometimes forget to change him when we're running around at Disney. It really was our fault. The bathtub poop was really, really yucky!!!
Thank you!

That's a great group shot of you all in front of Spaceship Earth.

Cute pics of the kids in the Honey playground.

Looks like Jessica had a blast dancing!

That's crazy your parents kept trying to call you knowing you were watching a show?! Ok, just got to the part where you texted them to stop calling!! WTG! LOL

Boo for diaper failure, YAY for new pants! Honestly, I would have been excited that I HAD to shop. hehe

I didn't know that about CL (about things being delivered there). Cool!

Can't wait to hear about the race!! :)

There weren't a lot of good photopass photos but that is a good one!
I don't think my parents had any clue how long the show is. They did stop once I texted them...a few times. :lmao:
I was perfectly happy to get new pants! I have enough work clothes but not very many weekend clothes so it all worked out. :thumbsup2
One of the many benefits of staying CL.

Quick update on real life. No time for a trip update this morning. I'm already running late to work...

Trying to figure out the mortgage thing. Because of the economy we're going to be able to get a small mortgage than we wanted (not because of qualifying but because of the way the mortgage rules have changed). Which means we need more money down. I think we'll figure it out but it sure is stressful!

Which also means that Tom has already started saying that we might have to give up Disney in August. I'm thinking about downgrading rather than eliminating. We're a family of 5 so our options are limited. Right now we're booked at BLT. We could stay in a regular room at BC for a lot less. Swan/Dolphin would be even less but I'm not sure about the 5 in a room thing. POR would be even less but I don't know how Tom would do in a moderate with double beds (he's 6'4" and built like a linebacker!). I'm going to keep our BLT reservation for now because we won't be able to replace that with the discount. I figure I can always change our hotel later. I'm more worried about airfare which is pretty reasonable now but will get higher as the trip approaches....
All for a good cause, I know! :thumbsup2

Amanda

PS I will, of course, cancel our Disney trip if we can't afford to go paying cash. I won't put it on credit card or jeopardize our house buying. But I can vent, right? ;)

Have you looked at the FW cabins or the All star suites. I haven't stayed in either one, but they would give you 2 rooms. Or have you looked into renting DVC points from an owner? That is usually a cheaper way to get a 1 bedroom. (I know the whole dilemma of the 5 people thing.) Good luck with the house thing. Somehow these things always seem to work out, but they can be stressful!

The C25K is an actual program. I wish I could take credit for it!
Amanda

OK so just wanted to update you since I had no idea what the C25K was just 2 weeks ago (DUH! new runner here....)... I now am totally onboard with the C25K thanks to reading about it here on your TR! I am almost done with my 2nd week and downloaded an app for it on my iTouch last night. So I owe it all to you THANKS! :thumbsup2 Sorry to interrupt... carry on!

Good luck with all of the house stuff! We're lucky that Chuck can get a VA loan with no down payment. Otherwise we'd be waiting a few years before buying. Hope everything works out and you're still able to take your trip in August. :goodvibes
