Super Walmart shutting down ALL self checkouts...

They still have the patties on their website, so it may just be a matter of which regions/markets are still stocking them.

I used their "Where to Buy" page and found that it's strictly Dollar General carrying them in my area (as well as a small area chain called Fiesta).

The ones at Sam's are a different brand, so that could be why. We ended our Sam's membership when they closed down the brand new location nearest to our house. It was a really nice store that stocked the staples as well as some nicer items. After it closed, we were stuck with a really bad location that didn't carry everything. That's when we really took notice of how product overlap between Walmart and Sam's really hinges on location. We shifted to Costco once our membership year was up.
Yes, you are seeing the same thing I am. The site says Smart and Final stores stocks them, but Smart and Final says Ball park stopped making them. I have e-mailed Ball Park but have not gotten a response
Actually, I dropped my Sam's Club membership when we got our first Walmart here in the early 1990s. We had Sams Club but not Walmart. Apparently California was one of the last parts of nation that Walmart opened stores. Everything I bought at Sams Club was at Walmart, at the same price.

Yes, I noticed a few weeks ago. The store was empty and one lonely cashier was waiting for customers. I had a 30% off code and a $25 gift card and I wasn’t sure if self checkout would accept them so I went to the staffed register.

She said you can use such items at the self CO’s.

Some self checkouts at some stores have a section at the end where one scans any coupons at the end of purchase. They also ask what type of payment one is using, like gift cards, credit, etc. Not sure about Kohls though.

Self checkouts are actually horrible because it gives people a reason to take their good ol time bagging their stuff. Ive seen ppl start bagging, then stop to get on their phone, then start bagging again. Like move.

LOL. Ask my wife about my pet peeve at the store. People who lolly gag at the full service checkout and the clerk that encourages it by engaging in small talk after everything has been rung up and totaled. The customer is so wrapped up in the conversation that they haven't even started getting out their method of payment, and the clerk is so wrapped up in the conversation that they don't notice that the customer is waiting for them to take the method of payment or hit what ever button they have to hit to accept a credit card purchase.
The grocery store closest to us is Smart and Final, and they don't have self check. We went out for a walk around dinner time and decided to pickup hot dogs and buns for dinner, and Lord I wished they did have self check as they had lines at the two open registers. Of course, they only have four checkouts, but I doubt they have the staff to open them.
Our regular store has 4 self checks, and 10 staffed checkouts. Except at Thanksgiving and Christmas, they never have more than two check stands open. But last week we noticed one of the staffed checkouts has been converted to a "10 items or less" checkstand, but it wasn't open.
One of the big chains here used to advertise their check stand policy. "Three's a crowd". If more than 3 people were in line they would open a new checkstand, and keep opening them until all the check stands were open. Not sure THAT is ever coming back.

You should probably avoid places like South Dakota :rotfl2:

"Oh you're buying a stick vacuum? Oh that looks pretty neat. I been thinking about getting one of those myself dontcha know" ....plus a few other items in the cart. (actual conversation at a Sioux Falls Walmart)

Not in the self check I presume. LOL

Was just at the local Walmart today and they still have their self-checkout areas. Works fine if you only have a few items. I still prefer to go to the line where there is a cashier if I have a large number of items. Was the OP reading someone's opinion on social media or do they have a news report from a reputable media outlet saying they are eliminating all self-checkout?

I agree about some people taking too long at the self check outs (though it usually seems to be uncertainty about the machine understandable in some cases) but I can't say I've seen what you've seen there. I only have seen those actions at the regular check outs. The only place I've consistently seen phones out at self check outs is Target where you scan your Target Circle card from your app. The issues, if you're seeing this on the regular, is not the self-check outs as the cause IMO.

At regular check outs I have routinely seen people on their phone distracted either talking on it, texting or playing with it some other way. Then there's the payment issue where actually I usually see it where the cashier is the one the customer is waiting on to press a specific button to allow the transaction to finish out. And yes the small talk.

Most of my avoidance on regular check outs is because it takes longer. Sometimes bagging is faster on the cashier but it has often led to overstuffed/too heavy/too mixed of bags. And I always seem to get stuck behind the slowest people possible at regular check outs.

Meanwhile here in Texas we’ve had several Walmarts refurb to where the clothing sections look more like a Kmart/Target and it’s ALL self checkout.

Many Walmarts are undergoing refurbs on their clothing areas to be more like a department store in design, not sure if that's what you're referring to. They also are getting in more expensive (relatively speaking) items. I went in looking and there were way too many things that were $30-$40 but the thing is at a department store I am able to buy those things for less than half that during a sale or more frequent clearance. I don't go shopping at Walmart to spend more than a normal department store

Our walmart still has self checkouts but only four of them are open generally, and they're under close watch by at least two employees and an AP at all times. They are only allow for express checkouts of 15 items or less, and using them to purchase alcohol or controlled medications (locked behind the glass cabinets) is prohibited.

I only use self checkout if I have less than 10 items. Otherwise it gets too cumbersome because you can’t load all the groceries in the bag stand as there are only 2 bagging spots for each checkout line.
We do like the Sam’s club scan and go. You scan your items with your phone on the app as you shop and then you pay via the app. The person checking receipts at the door will scan the QR code receipt and ensure everything is correct.

I wish my Stater Bros would do self checkout.

I wasn’t sure either since this was the first time I encountered self co’s at Kohls. I could have tried, but the lone cashier was probably bored and looked at me while I was approaching the registrars, perhaps hoping she’d relieve her boredom for a minute or two by processing my purchase.

I worked at a Target where I saw it almost daily. They were too distracted by their phone the entire time. Just scan your sh*t and go.

Yeah I only see it at Target but I'm not seeing people do other things on their phone but would agree that would be frustrating if that's what they were doing. Although I would leave room for Apple/Samsung/Google Pay stuff as something someone was messing with.

I see people on their Target Circle app that they are fiddling around in which IMO is on Target. I scan my barcode usually with no issues but it takes a few steps to get to that part in the app. I've had some issues with Target Circle offers I've redeemed or saved. One time I had to get an attendant to override it as it clearly should have worked for the exact item I was purchasing.
