Super Goofs are HOT, HOT, HOT in August

Good Morning Everyone!

Just got back from a week in Stowe, VT. Got in lots of biking and running. Note to self- update spread sheet for August. Love my new bike!
Can't wait for the gang to head back to school. I find it difficult to go to the gym when they are home- we have had a blast this summer but I have 9 weeks until MCM. I am freaking out a little.

I am so fatigued lately. Can anyone please offer some advice. My legs feel so heavy after 2 miles and I feel like I have no endurance. I am trying the Galloway to see if this helps at all-R2/w1. It is helping on the longer runs but I don't know whats wrong with me. I don't eat meat and I am really trying to make sure I get enough protein but this usually falls on the back burner (1.1 g per Kg- right?)

Help!!

Happy Friday all.

Joanne I am not a diet guru, so I doubt I can offer any great advice. Any previous issues with iron deficiency or thyroid?

Lisa Where are you staying when you're at RFTT? If I had my own space I would offer to share, but I am actually bunking with my sister and her family at OKW.

Hello to everyone else.

I did 5.7 today at the gym. I had a weird, but promising thought the other day. I suddenly thought "I believe I can do a marathon". First time that the concept didn;t freak me out. Of course, I was probably relaxing on the couch when I thought that as opposed to having just finished a long run, but hey, I'll take it!

Maura

Hi everyone...I know twice in a week and everything...:scared1:

Maura, staying at AS Sports. The lovely Liz and I are sharing digs seeing as she talked my DH into letting me go and all.

Angie, I have a job and still no money...:rolleyes1

Big waves to everyone else!

So I was feeling pretty good about going to RFtT until yesterday when Suzanne said see you in 44 days...:eek:WHAT??? Must. Run. 6. Miles. Tomorrow...Just to prove it to myself of course, no other silly reason than that. :upsidedow It's just 6 miles and all...:worried: So I think that's it for me. Too foggy and cold (50 degrees) this morning to run so I will see what happens in an hour or so for some outside time.

And, Maura, you CAN do a marathon....it's been proven by those of us who thought we never could!! :flower3:

Lisa, hooray for becoming one more Racing and Tasting Goof! The kids and I are doing the 3K and I think I might just drag them to the meet at All Star Sports. I'm so jealous of those of you doing the full 10K. I really enjoyed the race last year. But running with my kiddos in their first "real" race should be pretty darn priceless, so I can't complain.

Joanne, probably a silly question, but are you taking in enough carbs?

Maura, I totally believe you can do a marathon. Myself, on the other hand, I'm not so sure about... ;)

Quick hit before heading off to sleep - I'm in for RFTT. Didn't know it was the last year when I signed up for it, but not sure I can talk DW or a sister in law into running it as well.

Yay Rich, a bunch of Wishers are meeting at the All Star Sports food court about 4:30pm on Saturday to meet in person and take a couple of pictures. If you are in the area, stop by, its alot of fun!!

Got in 8 miles yesterday during lunch 1:20 :) and am about to leave for Madison to swim a mile or so and ride 70...

Hey Goofs! I've got some great news...I've been in contact with my local chapter of TNT and guess what??? I'm running the WDW Full Marathon in 2010 :yay::yay: I'll be traveling solo, without the family, since we're visiting Disney just a couple of weeks before the race. My dad and his wife will be driving up from Miami to cheer me on. I'm so excited...and surprisingly not even worried about the training (my longest completed race so far is a 1/2). The thing that worries me most is the fundraising...I have to raise $3800 for TNT :scared1: I've always wanted to join up with TNT for a race and this just seemed like perfect timing. I'll let you guys know when I get my website set up so you can check it out. I know a few of you have done TNT in the past...do you have any tips for me?

Shannon, I signed up with TnT for the full too! What chapter are you with? I've got a 4-6 mile group run tomorrow.

I've raised about $400 so far. I have a link to my training blog in my signature. Take a look.

Megan...It' great to know there is another Goof doing TnT! I'm participating with the chapter in Oklahoma City. I'm still deployed to South America for another two weeks, so I've only been able to correspond with TnT through email thus far. They're supposed to be setting me up with my webpage over the next few days. I checked out your page...it looks like you're off to a good start! Wish me luck with the fundraising...my biggest fear is not being able to raise the minimum...maybe I'll feel a little better when I get back home and meet with my fundraising coach in person.

Do you by chance have a copy of the training plan your team is using? I'm assuming I'll be on track when I get back, as I've been running a lot down here, but it would be nice to see what type of training plan they use.

6 miles for me today (R3/W1)...it felt great! I think I've found my perfect Galloway ratio.

PM me your email and I'll forward it to you.

Megan and Shannon, I'm doing the WDW Full as a Mentor with TnT. Feel free to PM me with your email addresses and I will include you in on the emails I send to my Teammates here in Birmingham, AL.

Please send me lots of pixie dust for the DL Half next weekend. I am sick with (possibly) the flu and had to bail on my last long run since I've been practically bedridden this weekend. This normally wouldn't freak me out too much since I've done all my other long runs as scheduled, but my orthotics finally arrived on Friday, and I was counting on my normal Saturday long run to test them out. I hope I can recover in time to get at least semi-long run in with them before the race. Still, I'm grateful that I was sick this weekend and (hopefully) not next weekend.

Thanks Kim...I'll take all the help I can get.

:goodvibes and PD for a quick recovery and having a great DL race!

AFM...6 mi walk yesterday and 3 mi run today.

Hi Goofs!

Sorry I have been MIA. My son made quarterback on his football team and I have been taking a crash course in football. I always thought I was pretty well educated about football considering I am a girl and never played. Well, I was wrong. My 9 year old son has been educating me on all sorts of nuances to the game. I can't wait for the season to start!

Lisa, Rich, Maura & Suzanne - I am green with envy. I would love to run RFTT especially since its the last one. Have a wonderful time! and take pictures!

Megan & Shannon! You are going to love TNT. I know I do. I ran my first Disney marathon with them and mentored the next year. TNT is an amazing organization and I know you will all have a blast at the race.

Kim - Congratulations on making mentor! That is a coveted postion in our chapter. They usually have 10 people apply for every mentor position so its a big deal to get it. I loved being a mentor and look forward to doing it again someday.

Steve - Sorry I am so late but I hate that you had a miserable race. I have had that happen a couple times now and it is such a let down. It really takes effort to shake off the bad vibes. I hope you are back on track by now.
As for the knees. hmmm. You ran a tough race then climbed stairs at a giant slide all afternoon? Your quads were probably jello by bedtime! I hope they heal quickly.

Joanne - fatigue? I can think of a couple things you might want to explore.

1. SUPPLEMENTS! I can tell a huge difference when I am taking my protein supplements and I do eat meat. I usually have a protein shake immediately after every run but sometimes I forget or just rebel. I pay for it on the next run. An added advantage is that they usually curb the ravenous hunger I feel all day after a hard run. You can get a soy based protein (thats what I use) but the experts say that whey based protein is more effective.

2. WATER. make sure you are very hydrated. This time of year the heat can fool you. Almost 80% of fatigue is due to dehydration so be sure you stay hydrated. Don't just drink extra water on your run, make sure you are drinking it the day before and after as well. I can lose 4 -5 pounds on an 8 mile run even while chugging powerade/gatorade and water all during, before,& after the run and drinking my protein shake afterwards. Our new scale measures your water weight so I know that its water loss when I run.

As for my training. Well its moster month for me. 40+ mile weeks until taper. Yesterday I had a terrible 18 mile run. One of those that really zapps your enthusiasm for running. I was in terrible pain all day. Not just the achey stiff pain I normally feel after a long run but serious misery. It was strange because I had a fabulous 16 miler the week before. I feel better today though so hopefully I will be fine to run tomorrow.

Cecilia

Thanks for the advice Cecilia. In regards to the supplements- is it a powder that you mix or tablet form. Where do you buy them and what do you suggest.

Yesterday I did 4 miles, body pump and fitness yoga (3 hours total) plus a quick bike ride with the gang- no wonder my legs feel like lead!

Joanne...Like Cecilia I usually add protein powder to my smoothies (I'm not convinced yet that it makes a difference, but I figure it doesn't hurt). I just buy the big containers of whey protein from GNC, Walmart, SAM's, etc...you can get it almost anywhere.

I use a product by Reliv Inc. I order it from a friend of mine who is a distributor. Actually, I use a combination of their products. I had been taking their vitamin supplements since last fall after I got so sick and I really liked how they made me feel and how it helped clear up my skin. Then I added a fiber supplement to help me lose weight. I like these products because I can combine them all in one or two shakes a day and they add very few calories to my daily totals. The first product is just a basic vitamin supplement, the second is a fiber supplement, and the third is a protein supplement. They all come in powder form and you can mix them with whatever beverage you like. I prefer water. I add the protein to my morning shakes and then have a pure protein shake after all my runs.

My husband uses a whey protein from GNC and he mixes his in milk. He also uses this premade stuff called muscle milk immediately after intense workouts.

Whatever stuff you use, be prepared for sticker shock. Its not cheap. But if you use it consistantly, it will make a noticable difference. For instance, I had a terrible 18 miler sunday, but I took my shakes like a good girl and today I was able to crank out a super fast 6 miles without a problem. Before I started the protein supplement, I would still have been sore today.
