Sunshine Protection Act

Ask the people in Arizona?
That's irritating, too. Hawaii doesn't observe DT, either. Parts of Indiana used to not to until recently.

Um, because time is worldwide?
Well, sure, but as it is the United States bounces between DT and ST. We can just split the difference. India standard time (IST) is 5:30 ahead of Universal Coordinated Time. So it has precedence.

Why is it so irritating if one state has a different time than everyone else? If I go one state west, I need to change time. Actually, I don't even have to change states, the line goes through my state. So if I'm doing something in the town two hours away, I need to take the time change into account. So I'd have to do it for Florida too? Who cares?

Personally, I think the entire country should go EDT all the time, but if one state wants to, go ahead.

Having said that, I read that Florida's government wanted to go to year round daylight savings time. I did not know it was called the Sunshine Protection Act. I'm pretty sure the sun will still shine, regardless of what the Florida legislature/governor decides to do here.

:ssst: Don't ruin it for them. Congress still has to pass it. ;)

For me, it has to do with the fact that zones are East to West. So Florida is in the Eastern time zone. Should be the same time as Georgia, not Texas. It's easier to remember you cross time zones when you are following the sun rather than when you are going in a different direction all together.

And it depends on the time of year. So in July Georgia and Florida are the same time, but not December. Obviously I'll get used to it eventually, just like people did when Arizona decided not to observe DT. But right now it seems silly. In ten years, it won't matter. It will still be silly, but everybody will be used to it.

Of course, if I had it my way, the whole world would be on UTC.

Not really irritating, but I once almost missed a flight when traveling through Arizona, because I did not account for the state not observing DST.

On our trips west, we drove in and around the southwestern states over many days, in and out of different time zones, in and out of Daylight Saving Time. My phone updated most of the time as needed, but heck, some areas didn't even have good reception. I gave up and just asked at our hotel each night what the heck time it was.

Part of Florida IS in the same time zone as Texas.
Ah, crap. Yeah, part of the panhandle.

So.. wait. How does that get affected by this act? Is Western Florida's time going to be an hour ahead of Central time when the rest of the country is not in DT? In December, if it's 11AM CST in Dallas, does that make it 12PM CDT in Pensacola?!?

:scared1: That is early! My kids school starts at 9. What time does she finish?

2:07 pm.

Her brother used to start at 7:40, but his school was closer to home, so he didn't have to leave until 7:15. (He's a college student now, not living at home.)

OMG, we had this problem too. Especially around the Lake Powell area. We had 5 ATT Iphones and they never all 5 said the same time. My son had a watch, I thought, great we will go by that. Then realized it was a Garmin watch and also changed based on tower locations. Even our rental cars clock updated on the towers. Throw in the Indian reservations also on different times, we were confused for days. lol

If only the code I support only ran in Georgia but it runs all across the country.

This will require hundreds of thousands if not millions of computers to be updated to know about Florida's new special case.

Indiana had its own special time for ages (didn't do daylight savings time) Computers can handle it.

IIRC, it wasn't even the entire state (is that still the case today?).

I recall having a conversation with someone we worked with that was located in Indiana - trying to explain to them DST was a nightmare. :headache:

Silly question, but what does this mean as far as tv show schedules? Since they have always switched with DST, will the shows be on earlier part of the year? Confused.

I don't even want to start a debate but where I live it's called Daylight Savings Time. Where are you, NinaBella, where it is called Sunshine Protection Act?? And why do they call it that? Just curious. :)
I honestly didn't know exactly what was being talked about at first so I went and googled it. I just hadn't heard of this measure yet. I do know that states have in the past wanted to get rid of switching.

Didn’t say they can’t but there is a cost in updating every computer and software package to ensure it works with Florida’s new rules.

It is not just computers in the US.

Massachusetts and Maine want stop switching to DST. I don’t follow the New England news on where they are in the process; however, Florida isn’t the only state with possible changes.

Would need more (i don't remember if all) New England states to agree. From what I recall, not far.
