My 2 year old only seems to get eczema when it's hot or she has been swimming. We took her swimming last weekend and it started really bad on her thighs, knees, wrists etc. We are going to WDW in less than 2 weeks so I'm trying to figure out how to keep it under control in the extreme Florida heat. Also, what kind of sunscreen should I use that won't irritate her skin???

DS has horrible eczema. Not sure about the humidity in FL but his dermatologist recommended CoTZ, Vanicream and Blue Lizard. He had a rash from Blue Lizard so we've stuck with Vanicream sunscreen and it works fantastic. It comes in regular and sport.

DD and I have eczema, though not severe. I would start using CeraVe cream and body wash right away to help the eczema. It works much better than steroid creams. Anything with Calendula might be helpful, as well. In terms of sunscreen, we use California Baby or Badger. If you aren't used to using these sorts of sunscreens, you may experience sticker shock, but they are the best. Finally, wearing a sun hat and slightly longer dress reduces the amount of sunscreen DD needs to wear while not making her overwhelmingly hot.

My ds has eczema and last trip I used the copertone waterbabies pure and simple sunscreen and he was good.I made sure to use his cereve cream regularly and I had his prescription cream with me.He has a problem with the pools irritating him too.

I suggest Vanicream. We haven't used the sunscreen yet, but we do use their cream on DD who has SEVERE eczema. It is the only thing that works for her so I ordered the sunscreen for her as well.

Thanks everyone... I think I might try the california baby super sensitive sunscreen. I read tons of reviews of it...they have a gentle bug spray too which is nice. :goodvibes

We have been using California Baby for years now and have been extremely happy. It's also one of the only sunscreens out there with a safe rating on the Environmental Working Group sunscreen guide. It is absolutely worth the investment, in my opinion. Badger has been our second choice when we can't find CA Baby or need to save money. If it still proves to be too much on her skin, you could also google homemade sunscreen recipes and make your own. And definitely give the CeraVe cream a try if you haven't yet.

CereVe wash and moisturizer.
Blue Lizard or BullFrog sunscreen
100 percent lightweight cotton clothing
Stroller with a big shade plus a fan
Sun hat

Don't know what triggers your DD, but for our DS it helps to keep him hydrated. We make sure he is drinking lots of water. You are going to want to do that even in the humidity but it might help to with the eczema.

My son has had eczema since he was a baby. The RX creams and such never worked well. His is always there but gets worse when his seasonal allergies are acting up. The only thing that has worked for us as far as sun screen is the copper tone oil free sun screen, and I mixed a bit of cortisone cream in with it too, either in the bottle or just have both handy. All other sun screens just made his skin worse. Just keep reapplying every few hours and make sure they take a shower or bath every night (some times with out soap just a rinse off) after sweating. His dr also recommended that I apply all creams etc, right after the shower while he is still slightly wet. Also rinse off after the pool too because of the chemicals.
Good luck. My son is almost 9 now and seems to be growing out of it, hopefully your will too!

We just got back from WDW & had the same problem. I was using Aveeno & it made my 15 month old's eczema much worse. I called the pedi from WDW, and they suggested Vanicream- I wasn't able to find that but I did wind up getting Badger Balm sunscreen. Let me tell you, that stuff is AMAZING!!! Not only did it protect my extremely pale boys from the son, but it completely cleared up their eczema & their skin is so soft now! Its mostly zinc and all natural. We love it!!!

Vanicream is often behind the counter. No idea why. But go up to the pharmacy and ask for it. I know our local target and grocery store have it behind the pharmacy counter. It comes in sport (which is 35) or regular which is 60 but not as water resistant.

My son has terrible eczema as well. Our specialist told us to bath him once or twice a day and to only use unscented Dove soap and within 3 minutes of getting him out to just dry him a bit and then put a thick layer of a thick cream called glaxal base mixed with vaseline. You have to slather it, I take a dallop of one in each hand and mix them in my hands then rub all over him. THis has helped considerably.

We use the California baby sunscreen as well.

Another vote for California Baby! But an even bigger vote for bleach baths (or pools). My son's eczema is worse in the summer, too, and almost non-existent in the dry air of winter. Go figure. Doc says it's from his skin immunity not being able to keep bacteria at bay. In summer heat, it multiplies faster.

I put a capful of bleach in his bath in the summer months. When the pool opens, a daily swim does the same thing. Works wonders! At home on weekends, I also bathe him twice a day to wash the bacteria off. And I use the shower gel with triclosin. Triclosin kills bacteria, too. With this type of eczema, it's all about killing skin bacteria, not hydrating skin.

Good luck!:wizard:

I would also suggest Vanicream. My son also has eczema & I work for a dermatologist. That's what she suggested & it works well. Oddly enough, what worked the best was having his asthma diagnosed & controlled. His skin settle down & harldy troubles him anymore. CeraVe & Cetaphil are both great for moisturizers as well if you're looking for something.

We were using Aveeno Baby sunblock when our DD was diagnosed with a bad case of ezcema. Our pedi suggested that we stop using it so we started using California Baby & Coppertone Pure & Simple and a few years later, DD has not had another outbreak.

thanks guys...we are going to head to target to find the moisturizers you guys suggests and sunscreen for her. I had some aveeno baby eczema cream from the pedi's office that I've used the past 3 days and I think it's made her wrists even worse. Thanks for everyone's great info!

I used to use vanicream sunscreen but for some reason, it started making my face break out after a while (which is weird because the moisturizer is fine)

Now I use Kiss my face. I have severe eczema and chemical allergies and it is amazing.

Personally, for me, I am allergic to parabens and lanolin so I have to avoid products with those chemicals but my dermatologist suggests avoiding those two chemicals to all of her eczema and psoriasis patients.

Parabens are bad for everyone but people with skin problems are more sensitive to them. And many people with eczema are sensitive to wool and lanolin is secreted by wool-bearing animals. So if you are sensitive to wool, you will be sensitive to lanolin.

ironically, many of the lotions and sunscreens that claim to be made for sensitive skin contain either lanolin or parabens, or both ingredients.
