Sun, Shopping, Sand, Surf, Sweat & Shamu: A Splashin Summertime Sabbatical at SVR!

Welcome back! Thanks for keeping us updated. Thanks also for giving us some new ideas. Will check out groupon, want to Jetski. Have put Daytona Beach on our ToDo list. On a side note, I recommended Vistana Resort to a co-worker, he just got back as well and loved the resort!

Hi all, just dropping by for another quick hello! :)
Yesterday was Discovery Cove. Perfect weather, so much fun. We arrived at 7:25 am and didn't leave until 5:45 pm. Got the exact cabana location we requested and it was awesome. We ended up having our initial dolphin interaction at 10:50 am with "Marea" and "Stella", then a second, private interaction with Capricorn (who was featured in the movie Jaws 3) at 1:45. Long story on why we ended up with two interactions....I will explain it all in my trip report. The kids were in heaven with having dolphin time twice :) .

:goodvibes

We ended up with Marea and Stella also. We were supposed to be at Noon, but I think it was about 1:30 when we finally got started.

By the way...our parking pass never worked! :confused3 I did buy mine within the 30 days. The first day we used it at Sea World the girl never scanned it. At Aquatica, the guy said it didn't work, but just said go. The second day at Sea World, I had to go up to the taxi parking and then go to the ticket area. They couldn't figure it out and just gave me a parking pass. I was really frustrated because it took forever to get through the line. :furious: I was dumb and didn't have a signature because the next time I had to explain to the parking person again and she was kind enough to believe me. If she didn't, I was just going to pull the paper from our windshield and park anyway! :drive:

I rarely post here, but I just wanted you to know that I've been following along with your trip, and you've inspired me to take my daughter on our own Discovery Cove/Sea World/Aquatica trip. I can't wait to read more updates!

Glad you had such a great vacation and that you are home safe and sound. I'm looking forward to getting to read more about it when you start up a trip report. It was fun to see your updates as the trip went on!

Thank you, my friend! :goodvibes Your trip is racing up soooo quickly!! I have to visit your PTR soon to get caught up on what I have missed over the last couple of weeks.

I'm with you on the  part, reality sucks!! But as they say, there's no place like home!!! :) Glad you had a safe trip home! I'm looking forward to your report!

Thank you!! I am glad you guys returned safe and sound as well :goodvibes . I cant wait to hear about your vacation, too. We sure got some hot weather while we were there! (which was awesome......we finally found summer :thumbsup2)

So happy to hear your vacation turned out so well. I am back at looking towards the next vacation within 24 hours. By the way I finally booked our flight to Orlando for April 7, got a good price. Now to book a flight home. Still not sure if this is a 10,11 or 12 day trip.

Aw heck, go for 12! Seize the day! :rotfl:

I thought maybe I would find the two weeks too long. Nope. I could have stayed forever. Our next trip, which will be only 7 or 8 nights, is going to seem horribly short now that we have tried an extended one.

The jet ski groupon is still available :thumbsup2 . I actually just sent the link today to a friend of mine who is going in October. I can see it being something we do again in May as well.....it was way more fun that even we had expected.

We ended up with Marea and Stella also. We were supposed to be at Noon, but I think it was about 1:30 when we finally got started.

Dont even get me started on the parking pass  . Ours worked perfectly the day we went to Aquatica. No issues at all. When we tried to use it the first time at SeaWorld, it didnt appear to work but after a long while (and lots of questions) eventually the gate agent just gave us the OK to go through. The 2nd time we attempted to use it at SW (when Steve and I dropped by to purchase the photo CD from our VIP tour day, not to do an actual park visit) we were denied entry, and were told that the pass was expired. The gate agent made us go to the taxi parking like you had to, and Steve sat in the van while I went to guest services to argue it out. Guest Services ended up giving me a business card-style pass and said to use that instead of our printed pass. So back out we went, to the gate again, and the same gate agent told us that the card-style passes were old and not used anymore. Finally argued our way in and got the CD at Adventure Photo, then left. On our third visit to SW the gate agents seemed baffled by both styles of the passes and needed a long discussion before finally letting us through.

Honestly, they need a totally new system! :headache: Or better staff training. Or something. I am so sorry to hear you had the same frustrations!! :sad2:

Oh, that is so awesome!! You wont be disappointed.....DC is an amazing, incredible and fantastic park. Your daughter will love it, and so will you!!

Thanks for joining in on my report, and dont be shy! Feel free to chip in or ask questions whenever theres something you want to know or share :) .

Wow, that was so odd about the parking pass. Years ago, I did use it without issue. Since I had a season Busch pass, we had no issues with free preferred parking.

mNSSHP was great! Highly suggest going on a week day in September. Not real crowded on the first. Very nice mostly happy CMs. Loved the parade and fireworks. The finale of the fireworks was the best. The best of the parade was the start and the most memorable characters near the end. We also went home with at least 5 pounds of candy. Oh, and we were pixie dusted at the second parade. Highly suggest finding a place in front of the castle to see the castle do it's changing colors about 15 minutes before the fireworks, and to watch the fireworks. Then move into Frontierland to see the second parade. Much less crowded after the fireworks.

Welcome home! We are now digging out of what was brought home and ready for the start of school.

Thank you for such a warm welcome! I read one of your previous trip reports, which has made me select the Residence Inn at Sea World for our stay next year. I've taken my 12-year-old daughter to Orlando every year when her school gets out since 2007, but it's always been a WDW trip. We did do Discovery Cove in 2010 for a day (at the time, I thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, haha), and we've done a couple of days here and there at Universal, but we've never gone there with no Disney at all. I think it's about time!

My plan for next May will include Discovery Cove, Sea World, and Aquatica, but we also want to do Wonderworks, Ripley's Believe It or Not, the Titanic museum (my daughter's request), and some mini-golf. The mini-golf is a bit confusing for me--I want to choose a good one, but there are so many in that area. Not only will I be following this trip report, but I'll be rereading your previous reports for inspiration.

Oh, and I'm very happy to know that Capricorn is still around and kicking--he was our dolphin for our swim in 2010, and I fell madly in love with him that day!

I am so glad that the Halloween party was so much fun!

5 pounds of candy?!?!? That is awesome!!! :woohoo:

I definitely give Congo River the nod for mini golf if you are going to pick just one. The music, the theming, the gators.....all so entertaining! Sign up for their email list and they usually send out a BOGO coupon every month :thumbsup2 .

Titanic is great, and well worth a stop. Wonderworks is still on our "to try" list. We visited Ripleys on our final day this trip (had done the one in Niagara Falls several times) and we were grateful we had BOGO coupons to apply to admission. Even at $10 pp vs. the regular $20 pp, it was a stretch to say it was "worth it". Its 1-1.5 hours of your time at best, and just a tad underwhelming. I do think the fact that we have already been to the NF location also made it less interesting.....if this is your first Ripleys BION experience, it might be a little more exciting.

Poor Capricorn has just 6 teeth remaining, but he's still going strong. He was so adorable, visibly loving the attention, even rolling over on his back so we could rub his tummy. For such a big fella, he sure was a sweetie!!!

I think you will really like the Residence Inn SW. Its a great value property, and a fabulous home base for a SW parks vacation!

Alrighty, shall we get this party started? After all, we have 2+ weeks of vacation to cover…..if I don’t get my buns moving on this report, I might still be posting updates at Christmas!

Saturday, August 16th…..the day had finally arrived .

We set our alarm for 6 am so we could get up and get moving. With both of us having worked right up until the end of our respective shifts on Friday, we had some household tasks to take care of before we dashed out the door. After breakfast and showers, the first order of business was a thorough cleaning of the house and a final load of laundry so the house would be left fresh and tidy during our absence. Steve had thankfully cut the lawn after work on Friday night, a spur of the moment decision which turned out to be genius when the rain set in the following day. It also meant that I had an extra pair of hands to help with the cleaning (Steve is my vaccuumer … he considers it a “power tool”). I sent Jake, who had started to look extremely scruffy, to get a hair cut while we scrubbed, dusted and disinfected.

By late morning, the house was shining like a new penny and the laundry was washed and put away. The final items were added to the luggage, Jake had returned from the barber, and the boys loaded up the Journey. Sweetie’s mom dropped her off around 11:20 am, and we chatted for a bit before getting our “departure photo”:

Hugs were exchanged, last minute warnings were doled out (“you be good for Gina, or else you have me to deal with when you get back!”), and we all fulfilled the obligatory trip to the loo. And then….we were off! :drive:

Stop #1 was to fill up with gas. Stop #2 was at one of the En Route locations on the 401 for a fast-food lunch. Spirits were high and everyone was in a bit of a silly mood :p.

After a little slower-than-normal progress due to a motorcycle accident on the 401 and some spotty construction, we reached the toll bridge just before the border crossing.

Unfortunately, we knew we were in for another moderate delay when we saw this sign:

While we have faced a backlog at the border on multiple occasions, this was the first time we had seen them stopping traffic at the bridge. We were held about 10-15 minutes before they raised the gates and allowed us to proceed across the bridge, and the rest of the distance to the border.

Traffic at the border was heavy, but not crazy ridiculous (we have experienced the latter before….so this line seemed manageable):

We wondered if we might be stopped again for additional scrutiny while travelling with an unrelated minor, but Sweetie’s mom had done a fabulous job at preparing her travel package with her passport, notarized letters of authorization from both sets of her parents, travel insurance, etc. Quite honestly, the gate agent barely looked at any of it before allowing us to move through. Total time stopped at the border before we were on our way down the interstate was about 30 minutes. Not bad.

I always find the drive from Alex Bay to Syracuse way longer than the drive from home to the US/Canada border crossing. I don’t know why……except for maybe that other than when passing through Watertown, there really isn’t that much to look at. Alexandria Bay to Watertown is pretty short, but Watertown to SYR seems to drag on forever. Today was ever worse with construction, construction, construction. While we had hoped to reach our park and fly hotel by 3-ish or so, it was closer to 5 pm when we finally rolled into the parking lot. And the grey, drizzly skies had started to rain very steadily….I can sense a change of plans in the near future.

We checked into our room at the Candlewood Suites Syracuse Airport. We’ve stayed here before (multiple times), so the room style and the hotel are very familiar to us. It’s a bit dated as far as the decor go, but its clean, affordable, the staff are wonderful, and it’s very close to the airport. It serves the purpose well and is dependable, so to speak.

The living room:

At check-in, we arranged for a wake-up call and a shuttle to the airport the following morning, picked up all of our parcels which they were holding for us (items we had ordered online and had shipped to the hotel in advance), then retired to the room to have a chat about dinner. Original plans were to head to Steve and Jake’s beloved Dinosaur Barbecue for a man-feast of meat, but it didn’t seem like the best idea under the circumstances. The last time we visited on a summer Saturday night, the only available seating without a substantial wait was in their outdoor "Bone Yard". Considering the steady rain now beating down outside, it seemed unlikely we would be able to secure a parking space and a table in the restaurant without a whole lot of luck being on our side. With that in mind, we then started formulating plan B.

Since the Candlewood Suites doesn’t have a pool, the kids had requested a trip to the Carousel Mall to kill some time in the evening. When alternate dining options were discussed, we raised the possibility of hitting Cracker Barrel in nearby Cicero (a restaurant favourite that we never seem to get to) or keeping things simple (ie, cutting out a lot of extra driving) and going to a table service location right at the mall. A search of the mall directory noted a TGI Fridays (another family favourite!) so we made the executive decision to enjoy our evening meal at the mall.

With umbrellas engaged to help keep us somewhat dry we dashed to the Journey, plugged the co-ordinates for the mall into the GPS, and made the short trip to Syracuse’s "premier shopping destination".

And you're off! Nice "family" picture!

I've never crossed the border by car (we crossed on foot to Mexico and back when I was a kid, and I've flown out and back into the US) so this all looks so foreign to me! There's nothing more annoying to me to be on a trip I know will take some time and be stopped multiple times for accidents (though I always hope no one was really hurt), traffic stops, general traffic, construction, etc. Once I'm on the road I want to GO. And then the rain comes!

The hotel looks like a great place to wait out your one night before flying away! At least, it looks like it was a good size and as long as it's clean and functional for what I need it for (showering, eating, relaxing) I'm happy.

Good idea to just eat in the mall! Save you some frustration, that's for sure.

We drove past the scary purple castle motel yesterday. Let's just say that It looks like the kind if place you go to get a hooker and some crack. I'm tempted to call and ask if they rent rooms by the hour.

It was pretty chaotic when we arrived at the Carousel Mall. Miraculously, we found a parking space (we had planned to valet the Journey, but even the valet was backed up so far that we couldn’t even get into the drop-off line) and we schlepped through the puddle-y lot and into the building.

The mall had changed a lot since our last visit. There are a whole host of new stores in an entirely new section of the building (which was still in construction in our last visit), plus a wide assortment of amusements from kids ropes courses to indoor go-karts. Honestly, the new “vibe” didn’t really appeal to us. It was very busy. And loud :scared:. And busy. And did I mention, loud? Probably the inclement weather outside contributed a lot to driving folks indoors but it was so chaotic that I thought my brains would start leaking out my ears.

Eventually, we made our way to the upper floors to see if we could get a table at TGI Fridays. And this is where our Carousel Mall experience went sour. We were “greeted” by quite possibly the rudest young lady I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. She wouldn’t allow us to put our name on the list to wait for an available table unless we gave her our cell phone number. Of course, I didn’t know the new Roam number off the top of my head, and I hadn’t put it into the phone as a contact. We were planning on waiting in the seating area adjacent to the greeter’s podium, and suggested that they could just wave at us when it was our turn. Nope. Cell phone number or you won’t get to a table. We eventually obtained the number (we texted Sweetie’s mom, who texted us back the number), gave it to the greeter, who grunted a response and walked away. We found chairs in the seating area and began the wait (which we were initially told would be approximately 30 minutes). We were just to the left of the greeter’s podium….perhaps 8-10 feet away.

30 minutes later, nothing. 45 minutes later, nothing. An hour later, still no text saying a table was ready….but a server comes over and snottily inquires if we were the “B________” family. Yes, why? We’ve been paging you for an hour. Over the mall intercom … (remember I said how LOUD it was in the mall….there would be no hearing a page, trust me). Paging? Why did you page us? You insisted on our cell number so you could TEXT us.

We paged you. You didn’t answer. (insert snotty glare here)

Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I won’t bore you with the irrelevant details, but let’s just say it got no better from there. Pitifully slow service (we were certain at one point that they must have forgotten our order entirely), inattentive and inconsiderate servers, mediocre food, and I felt like we were in the middle of a frat party. We had extolled the praises of TGI’s to Sweetie and I was beyond disappointed that this disaster was her first dining experience of the trip.

By this point, the busy morning, long road trip, dreary wet weather and dismal meal had all but sucked the life out of us. We didn’t even bother to go for the planned ride on the carousel, nor did I even take any photos of our mall visit :sad2:. We opted to retire to the hotel room, get a good night’s sleep, and prepare for our early morning wake up call. Our shuttle would be ready to whisk us to the airport before the sun was up…..and we had to be fresh and ready.

Showers, PJ’s and bed. Tomorrow was another day and a fresh start. It would be good bye, Syracuse, and HELLO, ORLANDO! :cool1:

LOL!!! :rotfl: Best. Description. Ever. :thumbsup2

How is your trip so far? Having a good time? Still stinking hot outside?

We are having a nice time but I'm feeling guilty about not being home for the first day of school. Of course I've been told it was horrible. Gotta love high school drama.

The weather is gorgeous. Hot but not as hot as in past years. Only one full day left. We head home early Friday.

Well my friends, its over.

I hope to start the official trip report, with a zillion photos, later this week!

Am eagerly awaiting your trip report Gina. Glad to hear that your family had a great time and that all made it home safely. When my children would start to bring their "significant" others along to Florida, it started a whole new chapter for our Disney family vacations. Now with two grandchildren in tow, a new chapter begins again. I foresee this in your future as I am sure that your son loves the family vacations as much as my children do.

Great start on the full trip report :thumbsup2

Thank you! I will try to keep the updates coming. Nothing worse than a trip report that's so long between entries that you want to take a snooze :faint: .

Aw, your poor girls. I am guessing it probably wasn't as bad as it initially sounded, it was just felt worse because their momma wasn't there to give 'em a big hug at the end of the day. Jake would be the same way!!

I am glad you got some great weather for your trip :thumbsup2 . Hard to believe your week in the sun is almost up. Time flies when you're having fun!!

I am a little saddened that Jake likely won't be joining us for our May vacation. Its our anniversary vacation (we celebrate 22 years on May 1), and he has told us he thinks it should be an adults-only trip this time (not that he's not an adult now, but he's thinking older adults....old farts like us, lol). Plus he wants to be able to grab every shift at work that he can, and a week away is a big hit to the budget. And the GF will be in school and not able to come.....making a big difference, I am sure.

Now, I love the idea of some couples time....and I think my brother and his sweetie might also join us (its in the talking phase.....final decision on that still to come). But it will be strange to be there without my boy.

Ah, the winds of change are blowing. First college, now this :worried: . I know he'll join us on future trips (hopefully October 2015, on his reading week....and certainly when he's older and has a family of his own) but its still going to be a little hard to get used to the first time or two!

I think the same thing everytime I pass the dreaded purple castle.

Happily, the boss was glad he made the choice to stay in one of the Rosen properties :thumbsup2 . I don't know if he actually saw the purple castle, but he did see some of the less desirable areas of I-Drive and Kissimmee.....and was grateful I talked him out of being that cheap!!

Loving the trip report so far Gina!!
I'm sorry to hear Jake might not be coming. I think there is still plenty of time for him to change his mind though. Going through another winter like last winter might make a spring vacation look awfully appealing.;)

Ha I see I spoke too soon! Well at least it SEEMS like it would have kept you from a lot of frustration. I have NEVER had a restaurant insist on my cell phone number to text me when my table is ready - personally, I'd have told them I didn't give my number to anyone, and they would need to step ten feet to the left and tell me when my table was ready. The nerve! I hope you wrote the franchise - I definitely would have! If not, there's still time!

Ok well at least you can laugh about it now - and now it's time for Orlando!
