Sun, Shopping, Sand, Surf, Sweat & Shamu: A Splashin Summertime Sabbatical at SVR!

I managed to catch my oldest via FaceTime this morning. Her sister's first couple of school days clearly were not that bad. She rolled her eyes when I told her what had been relayed to me. She then told me some other things that her sister was excited about.

Well, I have been a slacker, but finally got caught up -- and now you're posting pictures! :cool1:

Thank you! I will try to keep the updates coming. Nothing worse than a trip report that's so long between entries that you want to take a snooze :faint: .

:o:o

You would say that the day after I posted my latest update to my 2013 thread... after a hiatus of over a year... :rolleyes1

Now, I love the idea of some couples time....and I think my brother and his sweetie might also join us (its in the talking phase.....final decision on that still to come). But it will be strange to be there without my boy.

::yes::

Hubby and I have been doing couples weekends to start easing into the whole "vacationing without the kids" thing, and we always have a good time, but, man, it's just not the same. *sigh* But we also have Christmas with my entire extended family periodically, so I look forward to the same sort of thing with my kids once I'm a grandma. Grandkids are not inevitable, of course, but considering the fact that eldest son has been worrying about who he is going to marry since he was six  (and he definitely plans to have kids), I think my odds are pretty good. :)

Loving the trip report so far Gina!!
I'm sorry to hear Jake might not be coming. I think there is still plenty of time for him to change his mind though. Going through another winter like last winter might make a spring vacation look awfully appealing.;)

That is what I was thinking, too. We shall wait and see :) . There's plenty of room if he chooses to come, and its totally fine if he doesn't. I think he's planning on coming in October 2015.....at this point, anyway! :thumbsup2

Ha I see I spoke too soon! Well at least it SEEMS like it would have kept you from a lot of frustration. I have NEVER had a restaurant insist on my cell phone number to text me when my table is ready - personally, I'd have told them I didn't give my number to anyone, and they would need to step ten feet to the left and tell me when my table was ready. The nerve! I hope you wrote the franchise - I definitely would have! If not, there's still time!

Ok well at least you can laugh about it now - and now it's time for Orlando!

Good idea on contacting the franchise. I did that this morning :thumbsup2 . I probably won't hear a whisper back, but at least I provided constructive criticism that will hopefully benefit future guests.

That must have made you feel so much better. I am glad it wasn't nearly as bad as first thought! What grade is your youngest in?

You would say that the day after I posted my latest update to my 2013 thread... after a hiatus of over a year... :rolleyes1

Whoops! Sorry!! For the record, I wasn't referencing anyone in particular. Honest!! :goodvibes

We are all heading to Great Wolf Lodge over Christmas for a family getaway, so we have another little vacation together already planned for the near future. And I am sure there's a great chance Jake will join us in Orlando next fall. But like you, I fear it will feel "weird" for the first trip or two with just us grown-ups. I am sure we will enjoy it, but it will be strange nonetheless!!

It's going to be so CHEAP without an extra person (or two!). Less airfare costs, less food, less attraction tickets.....after a two week, 4-person trip I am going to have to really look at my budget differently for this next trip of one week with only two people!!!

Sunday, August 16th…..we are off to Orlando (finally!). :cool1:

Surprisingly, I actually managed to sleep fitfully before morning….in fact, we ALL did. Generally speaking we are usually a tad restless and no one ends up getting any substantial shut-eye, but for some reason, we slept rather soundly. Not that I was complaining….travelling rested is much better than being dead on your feet, particularly when our day was starting at 4:15 am.

Side note…..I woke up at 4:05. Perfectly timed. And thank the Lord I did, because our scheduled wake-up call never came, and I have no idea why :confused3. When 4:30 am rolled around, I had exited the shower and the wake-up call was still MIA, I had Steve stroll down to the front desk to make sure the shuttle was still booked for us (it was booked at the same time and with the same desk clerk that the wake-up call was scheduled, so I wanted to be safe rather than sorry) and yep, the driver would be ready for us at 5:30 as requested. We didn’t bother making an issue of the missed call but it’s a good reminder to have a back up plan (set the alarm on the cell phone or the clock radio) in situations like these.

The kids got up and dressed reasonably agreeably considering the god-awful early hour. Steve made the pilgrimage to the Tim Hortons across the street and came back empty handed….they weren’t open yet. We found out from the shuttle driver later there was a 24-hour stand-alone Timmie’s a few blocks down, but by then we were on our way to the airport and it was too late to enjoy a double-double before heading through security. In the absence of our planned breakfast, Steve and Jake made the pilgrimage to the hotel’s little Marketplace and came back with this:

The breakfast of champions. Okay, not really :crazy2:. But it gave us enough energy to put one foot in front of the other if nothing else.

Just before 5:30 am, we dragged the luggage to the foyer and the shuttle was waiting for us. We were the only ones riding that morning and the driver was both friendly and chatty. We were on our way!!!

Syracuse airport is tiny, and at that early hour there’s really nothing much happening. With boarding passes in hand (printed before we left the house the day prior), it was a quick and easy drop off of our luggage. We took a few pics, sped through security (short, short lines) and were off to the gate.

The kids grabbed some more food (the options at the airport were a little better than the hotel…..they have added some new kiosks since last summer, including a Dunkin Donuts and a smoothie places) and we settled in to watch the sun rise. Excitement was high and we were all ready and raring to go (lol, except for Steve, who was still sleepy!!).

You would think he wouldn’t have that much energy so early in the morning. What a goof.

We watched the sun rise over our plane, which had been parked overnight and was just waiting for travellers. It was a dreary, wet morning (carried over from the previous evening’s heavy rain) and really quite cool, low 50’s at best. We were happy to trade that dismal weather for Orlando’s sunshine and heat.

It wasn’t long before we were called to board. Steve and I had Even More Space seats, so we were able to get on the plane first (Jake and Sweetie would not be far behind, as they were seated just two rows behind us in row 3). When I upgraded our seats, there were only 2 Even More Space seats left on our outbound flight, so Steve and I snapped them up. I knew Jake and Sweetie wouldn’t want to be separated (particularly when this was Sweetie’s first time flying) and Steve is the biggest, so he got the first EMS seat and I got the second knowing the other two wouldn’t want to split up. I think they enjoyed having their own little private time anyway.

I will admit now that I was a teeny bit apprehensive about this flight. It was on one of Jetblue’s smaller planes (the Embraer) which has the 2 seats/aisle/2 seats configuration. The last time we rode on the tiny plane, I threw up from New York to Florida, and I have wondered by then if the smaller plane wasn’t the culprit. We would also soon find out how well Sweetie tolerated air travel (she was offered our customary Gravol but opted out….I let it be her choice). At any rate, I had nothing to fear as everything went smooth as silk with no airsickness nor turbulence to speak of. We enjoyed the onboard TV’s and the free snacks:

….and landed at MCO a full 25 minutes ahead of schedule to sunshiny skies and temperature of 87 degrees. :beach:

As our GPS voice would say…..”You have arrived”!

Having fun reading along, but something just struck me about Dancin's ticker. How much have we become Disney planners when a vacation that is almost 12 months out becomes a "last minute" vacation? I bet there's a story there!

I think that's the vacation she's currently on :rotfl: . I know my ticker re-set to 12 months once our arrival day arrived.

For the record, I wasn't referencing anyone in particular.

Oh, I knew that, no worries. :) But it was perfectly timed, and I do feel bad about taking so long getting mine done. I am determined to finish it this time, AND to go back and finish out the one before, AND to keep going with other trip reports, until I either do all the ones I can -- or middle daughter gets tired of them. :teeth: I have been using the HabitRPG site to get organized lately, and, while I don't know that I'm getting that much more done overall, it is making a big difference in getting me back on track with stuff I've let slide.

I've always had issues with getting things done once derailed, so we'll see if that lasts. :upsidedow

We are all heading to Great Wolf Lodge over Christmas for a family getaway,

Which Great Wolf Lodge? We're thinking about hitting the water park in the one in Wisconsin Dells while we're out next spring, and whenever we see one the kids want to hit the gift shop.

We didn’t bother making an issue of the missed call but it’s a good reminder to have a back up plan (set the alarm on the cell phone or the clock radio) in situations like these.

I don't think we've ever had one they complete missed, but we've gotten some later than requested. Well, our version of "late" -- hubby treasures his sleep, so ten minutes late can mess him up! One was more than a half-hour late, though, because there'd been some minor emergency at the desk right when they meant to call or something. But the phone call is usually a back up -- hubby and I have both been known to turn off alarms without waking up!

Jake really is annoyingly cheerful for that hour. :sad2: How neat that the seating worked out so well! Jake and Sweetie are adorable together, and I'll bet they had a lovely time. :goodvibes

Sooooo glad to hear you didn't have to deal with air sickness this time around. Hope you flight home was just as sweet!

Great trip report. I hope our plane arrives early. Planes don't bother me but they do my wife who prefers to have a couple early morning cocktails to help her through the ride:rotfl2: None of my kids have flown before so this could be interesting!!

I seen your son is wearing a MSU shirt. My cousin just graduated there. Tell him to look on youtube for a pure Michigan MSU video. It is about a minute long and hilarious.

We will be at the GWL in Niagara Falls. We LOVE Niagara Falls, and we adore the Lodge.....and we've never done a winter escape there before, so it should be new and fun and different. It will be very different to see the Falls region coated in ice versus the lush gardens we enjoy in the summer.

Jake was so excited to show Sweetie our beloved Orlando. I don't think he's ever been that chipper to get out of bed :rotfl: . They both had a marvellous time, and quite honestly would have been happy to stay forever. Coming back to reality (back to school, back to work) was a tough one this time!

I will have him look it up. He loves the US college teams!!!

Once we were off the plane (which was almost immediately, one of the perks of sitting at the front!) we made our way to baggage claim. Normally Murphy’s Law kicks in here and our bags are the last lonely pieces of luggage to come spitting out onto the conveyor. This time, our bags were among the first ones out, so we had luggage in hand and were on our way to pick up the rental vehicle in what seemed like no time. We were patting ourselves on the back for such speedy efficiency (early arrival plane, quick luggage pick up) when we walked through the door and saw the line up for Alamo.

Oh. My. God. :sad2:

Of the 1000+ people picking up rental cars at MCO at that very moment, 995 of them were in line for Alamo. Instant mood changer…..everyone became a little irritable knowing we had one heck of a long wait ahead of us. And of course, we had a Hotwire rental (new for us) so I wasn’t even sure what surprises there might be at the counter. Jake and Sweetie took the luggage and sat down in one of the little rest areas across from the counters and I gave Sweetie my phone so she could give her mom a call and let her know we arrived safely. Steve and I got in line. Within a few minutes, an Alamo rep came strolling through the line offering to check people in via the kiosk to alleviate some of the burden in line. No one stepped up….not one guest. So I asked if we can check in via the kiosk with a Hotwire rental, and he said absolutely! He even offered to walk me through it if I had never done it before. So Steve kept our place in line (just in case the kiosk experiment didn’t end well) and I went with Carlos to get things started. 5 minutes later (perhaps even less), I had the whole rental process complete, receipt in hand, and we were off to the garage……while all those poor brutes in line had barely moved an inch.

Instant mood changer #2…..we found out happy again! :cheer2:

In the garage, we had our pick of a dozen Chrsyler Town & Countrys. I let Steve pick since he was driving. He chose a black one, we stowed the third row seats in the floor, loaded the luggage in all that marvellous cargo space, and were off and running. :drive:

It was still too early to check into the Vistana (check-in is 4 pm and it was barely 11 o’clock) so we opted to grab some lunch. It’s an arrival day tradition to hit Friendly’s, so we headed to I-Drive to enjoy Supermelt sandwiches, burgers and ice cream!

Our server wasn’t overly friendly, but she was efficient and had us with drinks in no time. Not long after, the food came out. Jake and I went with the Supermelts:

Sweetie and Steve had the burgs:

I tried the waffle fries for the first time, and oooohhhhhh……they were sooooo goooood. New favourite :thumbsup2.

I have always said that every good vacation should start and end with ice cream, so we all indulged and ordered our favourite sundae (Jake, always the one to be different, had a Friend-z):

Before leaving on our trip, I signed up for the Friendly’s BFF club and was sent a 25% off coupon. This coupon, combined with the “create your own meal” deal made this one shockingly cheap lunch, with the coupon knocking more than $12.00 from the final bill. Nice :cool1:. (I actually used a TON of coupons on this trip…..it was almost rare if we didn’t use a % off, BOGO or some other kind of offer at an attraction or on a meal)

With full bellies and the doziness of the Gravol finally starting to wear off, we had a short discussion about what to do nex, and decided we would drop by the resort, let them know we had arrived, and give them our cell number so they could text us when the room was ready. Check in wasn’t until 4 pm, so being just after noon it was very unlikely that our villa would be ready this early. Sweetie was eager to see the place we had raved about for the past year, though, so we figured it was worth a stop for that reason alone.

We hopped into the van, cranked the A/C, and headed to Lake Buena Vista to be “welcomed home” to our favourite place in the USA.

Loving the two updates! First, what cute pictures of Jake and Sweetie. She's certainly a pretty young lady - her and Jake seem to complement each other.

I am so glad you woke up early that morning! Could be a much different travel day story if you hadn't!

Also glad to hear you weren't sick on this flight down. Seems like it couldn't have went better. Sweetie was awful brave declining the Gravol - I think I took motion sickness meds my first four or five flights to make sure I was ok!

Wow, getting around all those people at Alamo is AWESOME. How difficult was the kiosk? We're using Alamo this time around and last thing I want is to be stuck in a big long line. What information did it require of you?

Now you're getting to the part I've been waiting for - check in and a look around SVR! One question - we're going to arrive before check in time too, and we want to go to MK just as soon as we can. Will they hold our bags for us?

Excited for the next part of this TR!

Yay for the kiosk!!! Love those things! In all of our Alamo rentals we've never once used the counter. We just use the kiosk and off we go! I'm currently holding two reservations for December. Dollar for $161 and Alamo for $190. Neither is bad for a 10 day rental (Standard vehicle) but I am pretty sure I will use Alamo just to use the kiosk and be able to pick our vehicle!

Costco has recently added Alamo to there lineup(its actually the same as the US site now). I have a reservation for 15 nights with dollar for 270 and a Alamo for 305. I am thinking the same as you and I may keep the more expensive one just because of all the talk you guys have had of the convenience of Alamo. I have a full size rented at this point although I am looking for the vans to come down in price. If not I am content with a full size and who knows maybe I get an upgrade.

Just a quick question. If I check in online and have already put the second driver in does that mean I can go straight to the garage?

Woohoo report started! :cheer2: Love those kiosks! Glad you were able to take advantage of them and get on your way. I can't believe more people weren't willing to try them when offered.

Sorry no story .... It is the trip I'm currently on. Actually, this is our last night. We head home early tomorrow. Sad it's over but ready to go home.....that never happens.

Ah yes, Jake and Sweetie make an adorable couple.....young love is rather fun to watch (nauseating, yes ....but sweet nonetheless :rotfl:). They are an interesting pair, though...very fundamentally different personalities.

The kiosk was super easy :thumbsup2 . I would definitely use it again. Swipe your drivers license, swipe your credit card, hit a few buttons (decline the insurance, etc.) and you are off and running.

I am sure that the Vistana would hold your bags for you if you arrive early. But stay tuned....you may also be lucky (like we were!) and get your room early. Like super early! :worship: More updates in the next installment!

I would do the same thing ::yes:: . We love being able to pick our vehicle, and the option to use the kiosk would seal the deal.

Safe travels back to Canada, my friend. I am sure your girls will be happy to have their momma back. That's probably been weighing heavily on your heart for the past week, and the reason why you're ready to return home.

A week sure does fly by, doesn't it? Glad to hear you had a fun time with yoru DH :goodvibes .

Sunday, August 17th continued!

We arrived at the Vistana in short order after leaving Friendly’s on I-Drive. Steve dropped me at the door of the Welcome Center and went to park the van. The kids hopped out with me and decided to come inside and check things out while I was checking us in.

The Diamond Lane office was just inside the door of the Welcome Center, staffed with two smiling ladies sitting at side-by-side desks. They greeted me warmly and I gave them my name, assuring them that I knew we were not able to officially check in just yet but that we hoped we’d be able to complete any necessary paperwork and perhaps be texted when the room was ready. It turns out that the younger of the two ladies was Monica Shaw, the pre-arrival co-ordinator to whom I had been chatting over the last several months and who had replied to my Diamond Lane check-in that I submitted two weeks prior. She was so young, but such darling and immediately offered us beverages while she completed our check-in process. She also smiled and said “Guess what? Your room is all ready and waiting for you!” which yielded a round of Yoo-Hoo’s! :woohoo: from Jake, Sweetie and Steve (who had successfully parked the van and just joined us in the Diamond Lane office). She confirmed that they were able to honour all our requests (top floor unit with skylight, near the Fountains pool, not bordering the highways) and gave us the resort map, our activity schedules and dining specials for the week. She then took us over to the main counter to get our area maps, coupons, voucher for a free Picaboo photo book, check-in items (tooth paste, etc.) and for the sales team to extend the offer for us to attend the Owners Update (aka timeshare pitch).

Steve and I had already chatted, long before our arrival, about whether we would attend the Owners Update or take a pass. Considering we had a full two weeks at our disposal and several down days at the resort planned, Steve said he would be interested to hear what they had to say and how they would try to upsell us from our two deeded float weeks that we currently own. With a resort day already planned for the following day (Monday) we secured an 8 am time slot knowing the kids would still be sleeping by the time we returned from the sales meeting (or if they were up….it would be barely!!). They signed us up, gave us our “gifts” (two light sabres, another voucher for a second free Picaboo book, and $75 cash….yup, they gave us the $$’s ahead of time saying they didn’t want us to feel obligated to stay longer than the 90 minute commitment) and we were on our way to the villa. From check-in with Monica to the sales desk to the time we were out the door and off to the Fountains it was less than 20 minutes. Fabulous!

We pulled up in front of our building (#23).

And then we walked up the stairs to our unit:

Steve had loved our Spas unit last year, enough that he was openly doubtful that he would find the Fountains units equally appealing. Then we opened the door to this:

……and he said one word. Wow. :worship:

Sweetie was in awe with wide eyes. She was particularly excited to see that they had their own big, beautiful bathroom (which she immediately declared to Jake was “hers”). We prowled around the villa, took some pictures, then dragged all the luggage up the stairs to our top floor oasis.

Let me take you on a little photo tour:

The afternoon plans were to make a pilgrimage to Walmart for supplies (food, toiletries, etc.) and to the Nike Clearance Store in Kissimmee, but since the Gods has smiled on us with the super early check-in, we opted to get settled in before heading out. Okay, who am I kidding? The boys opted to rest and watch TV while we ladies settled us in. But quite honestly, I think it was easier for us to feather the nest by ourselves than to have the men chip in with their “help”. Within an hour, suitcases were unpacked, bathrooms were readied for our personal care, and the place looked (and felt) like home.

Mid afternoon, we headed out the door to do a little shopping. Or a lot of shopping. Yeah, that’s probably more like it!!

Before moving on any further, I wanted to share some more photos of the exterior of our unit and the Fountains area in general, since the grounds are so pretty.

This was the waterway than ran directly behind our building (the parking area was in the front):

So, so pretty. Makes me homesick already!!!
