30 days to go!
We made some changes to our flights this morning.
For those of you who dont know us very well, were not very good flyers. Admittedly, thats mostly my fault. I have been known to get airsick on more than one occasion
..I believe I have earned the dubious distinction of vomiting over every state from New York to Florida

. Sometimes I am fine (thank you, Gravol!) other times
..not so much. Most of the guys flying issues come from either (a) watching me get sick (making them sick) or (b) stressing out about me getting sick, so a lot rides on whether I am feeling good or if I am feeling like dying

. Then of course, we have BIG STEVE squeezed in to a little airline seat, which can irritate my otherwise placid man to an infinite degree. So as much as we MUCH prefer flying to driving (did I mention we are impatient folks, too?) the flights do cause a little advance worry for our trio.
And now we can add Sweetie into the mix. Who has never flown before, and for whom we have no idea how she will enjoy (or hate) riding in an airplane. This should be fun.
We virtually always book with Jetblue because their inflight entertainment helps our stress (and even my airsickness) more than you can imagine. The guys can zone out on their movie or TV show of choice, which helps them fret less about me. When I can focus on an episode of Law & Order or Property Brothers, I tend to feel less queasy (and often manage to even *Gasp!* enjoy the flight experience). And with the roomier-than-average seating, the ability to select our seats in advance (Steve NEEDS an aisle seat), the free checked bag person, and the free snacks it just makes for the all-around best we can hope for when it comes to our travel to and from Orlando. So wayyyy back in November when flights first opened up for August, we snagged our airfare and tried not to complain too much that the round-trip fares were just over $400 per person. Sweeties mom bought her airfare for her as part of her Christmas gift, which we were very appreciative of.
I have been watching fares like a hawk, but so far, no decline since our purchase. No Jetblue credit for me.
Last summer, we upgraded our flights to the even more space seats and the boys were in love. While the extra legroom means diddly squat for my 53 frame, it appears to make my 64 bruiser of a husband quite giddy. So of course, he wanted me to upgrade our seats for this trip as well, to which I said No Way Jose. We had already paid out the big bucks for these more-expensive-than-normal flights, and I thought upgrading was a bit frivolous.
Then, he works his buns off and nets almost an extra $1000 after tax in overtime on his last paycheque. And says to me (oh so innocently) over breakfast on the weekend
.So, do you think those even more space seats are available still?.
Sigh. He asks for so precious little on our vacations (he really does give me free reign to plan whatever I feel is important) that I feel awful saying no when he tells me there is something he wants to add on. And so I caved.
Now, it all didnt work out quite as I had planned. By the time I made the call to Jetblue this morning (I could not process the upgrades online as Sweeties reservation is not under our accounts, and I wanted to ensure we paid for her seat upgrade too) our outbound flight to Orlando only had 2 even more space seats left. We were all originally in row 3. The EMS seats remaining were in row 1. So I was only able to upgrade Daddy Long Legs and me to the first row, while Jake and Sweetie will be two ows behind. They were totally okay with that, though, and quite honestly, I think they will enjoy Mom and Dad not watching their every move for a couple of hours. Theyd better behave

(lol
.I know they will ).
On the way home, we were successful in getting all 4 seats in one row in the middle of the plane, row 14. It will be nice to have the expedited security (Even More Speed) at the Orlando airport on the Labor Day long weekend in addition to regular perks of the even more space seats.
Online, it said that each upgrade fee was $55 each seat, but the rep at Jetblue only quoted and charged me $40 per upgrade. So it came out $90 cheaper than what I had pre-calculated

. Two thumbs up for the awesome Jetblue customer service. It was a super nice young lady who helped me out (thank you, Anna!) and gave me no hassle in upgrading Sweetie's seat, even though it wasn't originally purchased by me. Easy, peasy.
Budget-conscious nutcase that I am, it all still made me cringe until I got a text at work this morning that one of Steves uncles lost his battle with cancer early this morning, just two weeks after diagnosis. We knew last night that he was in his last hours, so the news was not unexpected, but it still hit home and has caused me to stop and reflect on all those things that losing a loved one causes you to ponder. Plan for tomorrow, but live for today, because life is not a dress rehearsal. Make the most of every moment, dont sweat the small stuff, and enjoying spending the fruits of your labour (for the record, though, I also made an extra deposit to our RRSPs today
.. being frivolous feels less silly when I can also say I contributed a chunk of our excess to savings).
So I will enjoy every moment of stretching out my stubby legs in all that room in our expensive seats, and know that my guy is comfy and happy beside me, and has been rewarded well for all his hard work

. Then I wont feel so bad if I need to borrow his barf bag, too.
