Sun Pass- worth it to buy?

I checked in to the Sunpass a few years ago for my trips, but I understood that there was a monthly charge that comes off automatically against the amount you put on the card whether you use it or not? Has anyone clarified whether there is a minimum monthly charge or if the money has an expiration date for use?

I got question for the unmanned tolls. Do they have directions on how use them. Where I live I take the back roads every where. No I am not kidding. The last time use unmanned total I had 50 cars behind me because I was trying figure out darn thing. Some things can't replace humans at all.

As I understand it there is only a monthly charge if you choose to have statements mailed to you. If you choose to do everything by e-mail/web then there is no monthly charges.

I have never paid a monthly charge. They also just sent me a notice that my older sunpass needs to be replaced with the newer ones and it doesn't cost me anything

If you buy one to use in a rental car how does the toll know to use the one you buy vs the one the rental car already has installed?

Rental cars work off the license plate number. When you get your car you register the plate to your account for the amount of time you will be renting the car.

None of the toll roads in Seattle have people collecting the tolls. They have tolling gantries that you can drive by a freeway speed. They read your transponder and take a picture of your license plate. If you don't have a transponder you get a bill in the mail.

I think in Florida they still have bins that you have to throw coins into.

no monthly charge. No expiration date. I have had one for 6 years.

The only time it takes a picture of the license plate is if someone did not pay the toll or does not have a transponder. I looks for the transponder first.
It is wise, however, to register the rental car with Sun Pass. You can set the expiration date for the end of your rental.

Directions? NO, they have signs that point you in the correct direction. Just stay to the extream right when approaching a toll and read the signs. Very easy.

I think you need to go to Sunpass and read their "rules".

Maybe I am not interpreting section 8.1.4 of the SunPass Customer Agreement correctly. I understand from this section they will charge you a monthly fee if you request a mailed statement. Is this info out of date or wrong?

8.1.4 Monthly Personal Account Statement Charge: A deduction will be made from User’s Prepaid Account for each monthly summary or detailed statement of User’s Prepaid Account delivered by mail. Statement prices are listed at www.sunpass.com. Statements printed directly from the website are free of charge.

Just get a roll of quarters and pay attention to which lanes take exact change.

Brilliant! I have been using the cash toll booth for years wishing I had the change to use the "exact change" lane for years. I never thought of taking a roll of quarters. Sometimes the obvious solution eludes you.

We have had a Sunpass for a couple of years now. Love it. No monthly charges. Do everything online. Since we don't use it every month, I don't need a statement. If I want a statement for our records, I just print one.

They have a free App which will come in much more handy this year when we are 'adding' our rental cars to the account.

We opted for automatic loading, called 'Easypay', when the available amount on the account reaches a minimum ($10 I think).

By signing up for Easypay I am able to use Sunpass to pay for parking at MCO. (During the Holidays, he flies in a few days after me and I go pick him up).

We also use our Sunpass if we opt to rent a car for transport when we cruise out of Port Canaveral.

Really has paid for itself in terms of time and aggravation. :)

Under FAQs they make it a little clearer:

Q: I need activity statements and/or specific transaction toll receipts for business. What do I do?
A: To print your monthly activity statements free of charge, simply access your online account with your username, SunPass account or transponder number and PIN. Go to Statements on the right of the page and click on Summary or Detail. Then choose the month and select View. You may also request hard copy statements to be mailed to you. The fees for personal account statements are $1.50/monthly. Summary statements for commercial accounts are available at no cost. Detailed commercial account statements cost $5.00/monthly. The Florida Department of Transportation does not consider Internet-generated statements as official documents in cases of dispute. To request hard copy statements, please contact the SunPass Customer Service Center at 1-888-865-5352. If you need receipts for specific toll transactions, you may print those receipts free of charge online.

Hopefully that helps. :thumbsup2

My apologies, I never read that far. I cannot see any reason to have a statement mailed, so, I guess it never mattered to me as I can see usage online.

Thanks for printing that. In reality, it seems like a non issue for the average person.

Thanks. Because I see now holding up traffic trying figure out how use the thing. LOL

Most of the ones you would encounter from MCO to Disney are also manned, a real human will take your money and give you change, if necessary. :)

We have a sun pass account. We currently have a car rental for Dollar for our upcoming November trip. As long as we tell Dollar that we do not want to use their Pass24 toll option, we should be able to use our transponder without a problem, right?
