Summer 2005 cruise, what do you think?

With all the rumors about DCL repositioning the Magic from May05 to Sept05 to Southern California, I started thinking. This may be a great opportunity! Even though we plan to cruise in Dec. '05, I think I have my DH talked into doing a cruise in June '05 IF the ship is repositioned.

Any thoughts on where the ship would leave from (which airport would we fly into) and what the ports would be. I know this is all just speculation but I would love to hear your thoughts!

With a So.Cal repositioning, if would probably port out of LA and do a Mexican Riviera type itinerary. 3-4 day to possibly Catalina and Ensenada and a 7-day to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerta Vallarta. OR even a long cruise down to the Panama Canal.

There are two ports that can handle cruise ships, only about 5 miles from one another: Port of Los Angeles (in San Pedro) and Port of Long Beach.

The most convenient airport would be Long Beach (LGB), but Santa Ana (SNA) and Los Angeles (LAX) are also very close to the ports. Personally, I despise the LAX airport. Unless the fare to LAX is significantly cheaper than the others, we always choose LGB or SNA.

If you decide to go, be sure to work in a few days for Disneyland. That park experience is very different from Disney World (much more intimate). While Disney World (in its entirety) offers much more than the Disneyland Resort, you are likely to find that Walt's original park is more to your liking than its Magic Kingdom counterpart in Orlando.

We, too, love to fly into ANY alternative airport rather than LAX. In the past, the other cruise lines have not provided transportation from Long Beach, so we had to fly into LAX. But if Disney, or some private transport service were smart, they would start limo service from Santa Ana or Long Beach......an open market !

Yes, those would be the two most likely ports.

The third possibility is San Diego. Compared to San Pedro and Long Beach, San Diego is further from Disneyland -- but still a possibility. In that case, San Diego International Airport (Lindberg Field) would be the most convenient airport.

My thought is that, once out of the jurisdiction of the 11th Circuit, DCL will no longer be required to comply with the requirements of the ADA.

That's my thought..Cash's, too, I asked him...

My travel agent told me it will be positioned out of San Pedro (LA) and sharing the port space of another cruise line already housed there, but I can't remember which cruise line that was.

Although what the travel agent said may turn out to be true, I doubt the travel agent really knows. So far, DCL has not announced the summer 2005 plans to travel agents or anyone else.

In San Pedro, the World Cruise Center serves many different cruise lines.

Last year, Carnival moved their ships to their new Long Beach Cruise Terminal, adjacent to the Queen Mary Tour.

I would LOVE to see the Magic in the San Diego harbor. With all these rumors flying around I think about it often. My DD's and I were down at the harbor a few weeks ago and there was a HAL ship in. Of course we commented about how much better the Magic looks and how very cool it would be to see the Magic docked there.

Anyway, since we got off an Eastern cruise this past summer we have been planning on doing the Western in 7/05. It's beginning to look like we will now be going to Mexico but that's ok because we're going to save a big chunk of money by not having to fly. If the rumor's true that is.

I'll be happy either way.

If this happens, hubby is lobbying wildly to me to get on the repositioning cruise, too. But I am thinking 4th of July week to maximze the vacation days. My entire 2005 plans are on hold until the Big Revealation!

While I'd love to have the Magic out on "my" coast, is it truly a Disney cruise without Castaway Cay?

I think it's more speculation than rumor. None of the cruise companies I have looked at have prices for June, 2005 (RCCL, Carnival, HAL, Celebrity and DCL). I would be VERY surprised to see a repositioning of the ship until or unless there is another one coming on board. I think you may seem some specials like the 10 day Xmas, maybe some 10/11 day options or even a 14 day circle the Caribbean. Heck, DCL could add another ship and sail out of Canaveral and keep it mostly full. And since they have all the facilities and infrastructure, that would likely make the most sense from an economic perspective. Itenararies would likely be longer or different locations like Bermuda, circle or souther Caribbean or just one Eastern and one Western each week. Certainly they could work it for CC and for the terminal with 3 ships.

Out of curiousity, why do you say that? The ADA is federal law & would apply in CA as much as it does in Florida. Tell Cash not to worry, he wouldn't be left dockside in California.

BTW, there's also a beach that allows dogs not too far from Long Beach. My sister's lab loves going there. She has to spell 'beach' or he goes nuts. Oops, I hope I'm not putting ideas in Cash's head

No matter what they decide, I hope it is somthing special! That is the only way I will be able to talk DH into 2 cruises in one year. The thing that makes me suspicious is that DCL posted the dates for the Eastern/Western itineraries for Sept '05 through Dec '05 for only a day. It showed that our Christmas cruise will be an Eastern itinerary. The list just showed N/A for May through Sept. I really hope something special is in the works!

I tried to get on a wait list for one of their repositioning cruises (I had made the assumption that they would at least go through the Panama Canal to get the ship out to LA) and here is the response I received:

"Thank you for your e-mail.
As far as the 2005 cruises on the Disney Magic, guests have told us that cruising with Disney is also about going new places. In the long run, we are looking at a variety of itinerary options for the Disney Magic. We anticipate opening the summer 2005 dates in May of this year. Unfortunately, we do not maintain waitlists based on speculative itineraries. We look forward to the chance to sail with you."

The waiting is making me CRAZY ! We need to change our current reservation of Dec.2004 to something mid 2005, with lots of family and friends going too now. I over plan, and always have our reservations made well over a year before. The anticipation is killing me ! Now, no new dates until May !!!

What a selling point! Celebrate Disneyland's 50th Anniversary and cruise the Disney ship! Sure and why not two 10 day "repositioning" cruises through Panama Canal!!!

Oh please! The pro's outweight the con's on this one, oh weavers of woe, gloom and doom!

Since I have been cruising 2-3x a year now on the Magic, I am saving up all those cruises for 2005 until the announcement then I'm on it like "white on rice" - I will not miss this once in a lifetime event!!!

After all, I'm only going to admit being "50" once in my lifetime!

I am also looking forward to this repositioning cruise through the Panama Canal asI also turn 50 next year - and looking forward to something extra special. From what I can determine, if indeed this does happen, looks like they will have one end of May\early June and then another one at the end of August. Hope they announce soon or I will have to go with a back-up plan for an Alaskan cruise next year instead. - Mike

Disneyland is having a big grand opening of the Tower of Terror on May 4, 2004. Supposedly the big plans for the 50th will be annouced on 05-05-04 (note the fifties). If this is true then hopefully any plans for the cruise line will be annouced at the same time.

I would LOVE to combine the cruise with a trip to Disneyland!!
