Suitcase locks

I've just brought the straps from travelwithcare and I can't say I'm that impressed. Yes they do the job and stop the straps from being altered or the strap length being extended but the webbing's only an inch wide at most.

I think that this could be quite easily snipped and made me think that they are not worth the cash, a normal lock is around £4 so your paying £6 for quite flimsy straps (IMO).

The combination ones look better but they never mention if the mechanism stops the straps form being extended - can anyone comment on this?

Wire bag ties can be cut also. Nothing is foolproof really. I have bought two for my combination suitcases, will leave them unlocked and put a strap around each, and the most important thing? - don't put anything valuable in them.

I sent an email to Carlton (who make our cases) and asked if there was any way the locks could be changed.

Their customer service manager rang me and told me that this was not possible and even their new cases dont have TSA approved locks (they are looking into it).

He advised to use these straps http://magellans.co.uk/store/Packing_Aids___Locks___StrapsLA310?Args=

He also gave me a contact number for the UK - 0870 600 1601

they do look quite strong so I am going to order 2 for our cases

I just got some indicator TSA locks, they show green when you lock them with the combination, and if the airport people (is that a technical term?) use their special key (!?) to open them, they show red to let you know they've been opened.

I ordered them from saversuk.com and they were £6.50 with free delivery (for 4) and they came within 2 days. The ones without the indicator on are cheaper.

Arieliwish,

Can you provide a link into the page they are for sale, i am having trouble locating them.

Thanks

Got Them..

Thanks

Rob,
I bought the combination locks, not straps, from saversuk.com, I got the original link from a thread on here but it was for outdooraccessories.co.uk which took me to that site. I got the indicator locks which were £6.50 each, but there are normal combination locks and also ordinary key locks which are cheaper. The strap on their site is around £14 I think. I also got free delivery, and they were here within 2 days.

Sorry just saw you edited!!

I travel to the US about 4 times a year. I used to padlock my case and on the way back case and bag. When they introduced the TSA screening I continued to padlock my bag on the way out and then switched to using cable ties on the way back. I purchased a bag of 100 bright orange ones and am still working my way through that bag.

The purpose of the tie is to dissuade cassual bag dipping and rummaging as
the bags make their way through the system from me checking it to it being returned on the baggage belt. With the coloured tie I can see if the bag has been opened and then check the contents carefully before leaving the baggage claim area.

If the TSA want to look in the bag they remove the tie and do their stuff. [1]

For a hard sided case I would be inclined to use a strap with a couple of extra holes punched in it. I'd then use the cable tie through the holes to prevent the belt from being loosened enough to slip off.

The whole game is to make your bag less appealling to the casual dipper than the other hundreds that pass them.

:) Chris

[1] Fortunately at Portland International (PDX) where I mostly travel to the TSA process the luggage on the concourse where one checks in, so with a little bit of loitering one can watch the baggage pass through the machine and know if it was opened by them or not.

U.S airport customs can cut open locks if they wanna inspect your suitcase. if you get TSA locks( i think thats what they're called) they can be opened with a 'special' key, so you dont have to buy new ones if they get cut by customs. got this tip from departure lounge that was on tv on friday

have just looked on outdooraccessories.com and they do a great range of TSA approved locks and straps and at quite good prices..

i bought my tsa locks on ebay, they came yesterday, two green two purple, they arrived yesterday, i like them they have already been put onto my new cases to go into the lost for anoth 100!!!!!! days im excited,
