Hi there,

I read somewhere that as long as your kid fits in a stroller you should use one -- especially at Epcot. I have an 8 year old and nearly 7year old --both are pretty scrawny:) What's your view on this? DH says he thinks it would be ridiculous to put kids that age in a stroller.

Any thoughts.

well i have to agree with your husband, seems pretty silly to have a 7 or 8 yr old in a stroller. I doubt my DS 5 will use one this trip I could not see him in a stroller at that age but that is just ouur humble opinion. I guess i would start feeding those "scrawny kids" LOL (no offense intended)

I personally have rented a double stroller in EPCOT to push dd (6 at the time) and my niece who was 10 at the time. You will see people pushing children of all ages. If it helps the kids rest and enjoy the park I say why not. The double strollers are very sturdy and can handle a lot of weight.

With kids that age, I would not rent a stroller every day, but I *would* be open to renting one if they seemed a little bit tired one day or needed a break (if they fit in a stroller).

Lat trip our three were 4, 2, and 10 months. They used the strollers quite a bit. This trip they will be 6, 4, and 2. I imagine the 6 year old will walk quite a bit more, but we will make a stroller available for her when she wants one.

Hope that helps.

LOL - I don't think I agree that just becuase they can fit in a stroller you "should" use one! Then again I don't beleive in any "shoulds" at wdw.

Your kids should be ok walking for the most part and unless they seem to really need a stroller I would not bother renting. IMHO its more of a pain, not to mention they are also $15.00 a day!

My girls are 7 and 9 and we haven't used one at MK, AK or MGM in over 2 years. Occasionally my youngest would get tired and we would grab a stroller for WS and Illuminations in the evening although we didn't need one in November.

Take your time and enjoy the parks, keep everyone fed and hydrated and you should be ok without renting. If you do have a tired kid or a long day you will always have the option to rent at any point during the day/trip.

We only rented strollers twice during our 5 day trip (dd 6, dd 4) and one of those times was at 8:00 PM at Epcot! The girls just pooped out and we couldn't carry them clear around to where we wanted to view IllumiNations. The other time was near the end of our trip at MGM where we seemed to do alot of backtracking due to our touring plan.

I really enjoyed the freedom of NOT using the strollers very much.

I agree with your DH. Get them some comfortable shoes and socks. IMHO, there is no reason why a healthy child that age shouldn't be walking in the parks. ::yes::

I don't think it is really silly when I see big kids in strollers at WDW. Mind you I would think the parents were really off if I saw this at the mall! I actually think it is more funny when I see a grown man with purpke face trying to carry an 8 year old on his shoulders while trying not to pass out. WDW is just such a huge place, and it is very hard to gauge how much your child will be able to handle in one day, or one week. I think it is always best just to have them walk until you can tell they have had enough. You know what I mean...sitting on a bench every 10 feet type of thing. Then I don't think it is wrong to let them sit in a stroller. We usually don't rent a stroller until one of the kids asks (they will be 6 and 8 on our next trip) but we also try to go at their pace instead of ours. We have also found that just taking a "revive break" works wonders. We will go grab an ice cream or churro and sit in one of the many quiet areas that the parks have, or go get a table at one of the restaurants and sit for about 1/2 hour to 45minutes and just let ourselves relax. We have also found that going back to the hotel and swimming, napping or taking a bath before heading out in the early evening really works wonders! Last trip we were able to get through the enitre week without a single stroller rental!

I went when I was 7 years old, and my mother would have laughed at me if I had asked to be in a stroller. She told me that I had better be ready to do some walking, cause it would be hot, and there would be lots of walking.

My humble opinion is simply to forego the stroller, and let them enjoy on foot. :)

Only you know your children best. I would probably try it without a stroller, but reserve the option of renting one at any time, if they seemed overtired or just worn out! We just returned from our trip and I almost brought a stroller along for our just-turned 6 year old. But I decided it wasn't worth the hassle in the airport and that we would rent at the parks when necessary. I also didn't know what we would do with our backpack while in the rides, as we usually leave it in the stroller!

To make a long story short, we didn't need to rent one all week! The only day it was a possibility was at Epcot, around 5pm. But by the time we thought of it we were pretty far away from a rental spot. DH carried DS on his shoulders for a bit (10 minutes) and that helped. He managed to go along under his own power for the rest of the week! Granted, there were a few late afternoons that he was dragging a bit. But a short break and snack stop usually helped that.

I will say, in the past it has been a relief to my mind, when we are leaving the parks at night, in a crowd, to know that my kids are in the stroller and I didn't have to worry about being separated from them. But DH took one child and I took one child and we agreed to meet at the car if we got separated from each other (the pairs of us). We held on tight and managed just fine!
And it was nice not to have to maneuver a stroller through some of those crowds.

The overall positive effect was that we felt MUCH FREE-ER to come and go throughout the park without the hassle of stopping to park/pick up the stroller. Also, just nice to know that DS and DD could keep up with the miles a day that we logged.

The biggest drawback, IMHO, was what to do with the "stuff" since we didn't have a stroller to dump it in. We carried a backpack on the days when the weather was iffy, in order to have our ponchos and umbrellas right with us. We kept it as small and light as possible and when we were on rides, we put it between our legs or put a leg through a strap, so it wouldn't go flying out (think RNR!).

On the days with no threat of rain, we rented a locker in the morning. I thought it would be a real hassle to trudge back and forth to the locker, but we really only needed to do it once or twice a day, to drop off or retrieve sweatshirts. Our day at Epcot would have been much more pleasant (and longer) if we had thought to put long pants and warmer coats in the locker! And our day at MGM was perfect, because first thing in the morning we put a large duffle bag full of long pants, warm jackets and beach towels (to sit on) for our evening at Fantasmic. It definitely saved that evening. And people looked envious of our comfort!

ANYHOW...... I have gone off the track here...... Only you know what your children need. Why make an expensive trip miserable just because "someone" thinks they might be to old for a stroller. Do what makes them comfortable and you will ALL enjoy your trip a great deal more!! (You wouldn't deny them water if they were thirsty, so why deny them rest and comfort when they are tired?) It is certainly a lot more pleasant than getting mad at them for not keeping up with you, or feeling resentment because you had to leave early because they were tired of walking........P

When we go I don't plan on bringing a stroller or renting one. My girls will be 5 and 7 when we go, and they don't use a stroller now. They'll just have to make due. I think for young children (maybe 4 and under) it's a good idea. There are so many things to do and see that I'm sure it'll be easy to find a place to "rest" that's still exciting! :) $15 a day to rent one can really add up!

My athletic, basketball champion, soccer forwar, all boy DS 8yo, 74lbs, 53" rode in a double stroller gladly on our 3rd park day at EPCOT. He asked for it after we spent a few hours in FW and
were headed into WS. DH ran over to International Gateway
and grabbed one. We had a great day! Two years ago,
my neice, then 11-rode in one on our 3rd park day as well.
DS, then 6 and her brother, 8- each had a stroller every day.
It keeps the kids fresh and gives a big family places to carry
things! Put your preconceived notions aside and keep an open
mind. It makes the parks easier. It's loads of walking and
better than going home early.
You may wish they had adult size strollers!!!!!

7 and 8 years of age  I'm with your husband on this one, I think they're too old. Aren't the kids old enough to be able to walk like everyone else?

We brought strollers for my 5 and 6 year old, but we never needed them. The kids did fine and we went all day. On our second day at epcot, we were doing 'boring' stuff with lots of shopping and they wanted a stroller so we rented one. Other than that, they did great, and we didn't have to worry about keeping track of a stroller.

I wouldn't worry about it. If they get exhausted, rent one. As long as they are having fun and you take breaks for lunch, you should be fine, IMHO.

Thanks for all your advice. I think we'll hold off. Then if Epcot gets to be too much we'll consider it. Great idea to put stuff in lockers and carry extra clothes. That'll be really helpful.

On a practical note, one thing that really did enhance our experience was the use of the park strollers. Now, I know there are families out there who would, under no circumstances, push a child who is perfectly capable to walk around the parks, especially if that child is over a certain age. Well, in daily life I would have to agree. But, once again, we were on VACATION and using a stroller was a financial decision, not a moral one.

Financial? You spent $15/day MORE than you had to? Yes, we did. And here is why: it was a case of spending money to save money. By spending $15 for a double stroller, my children could last longer in the parks and we could cover more ground between rides and activities. Therefore it increased our bottom line value. Any time you can increase the amount of fun you can cram into the short time you have on a Disney vacation, the hourly cost of your vacation just decreases.

If anyone needs a stroller, it will be me. LOL. Wonder if my DSs would push me! :)

If you think about it, our kids (mine anyway) during the summer are outside playing from mid-morning until dusk. Running, jumping, walking, playing. Kids have more energy than most of us put together.

I suggest that if the kids need a break from walking, then take a break. Heaven knows that if THEY are tired, you are probably exhausted, so why exert more of your energy pushing them around?

One example of a good place for a stroller even for a 6 or 7 or 8 year old is at a nighttime special event like MNSSHP or MVMCP.

This past December was our first trip with no stroller for our 7 year old. She did fine except for MVMCP night. She wanted to stay for the 2nd parade so badly and was a trooper but she was so very tired by the time the parade started and poor DH had to carry her the whole way back to BWV! It was really tough.

If I were you, I'd play it by ear and if you're spending the whole day somewhere or doing a long night activity then rent one if you feel you must.

Don't worry about what anyone else thinks!

seems pretty silly to have a 7 or 8 yr old in a stroller.

I don't agree with this at all. It shouldn't matter what seems silly to other people. If your child is tired, feet hurt, whatever, then give the poor kid a break and let them be a kid. I don't think of a stroller as an item for a baby. It's for any child who can fit in it that needs to use it. I'm one of those people who doesn't care at all what other people think. I do what's best for the child and not say, "sweetheart, I know your feet hurt and you're exhausted, but people will think you're too big to be in a stroller."

My son was 5 and big but i don't care..it helps Me... call me frantic but when he wasn't in it, me and my husband were crazed looking for him..tooooo many people..i think it is unrealistic to think a kid could walk all of those park for 3 or 4 days..i have a hard time doing it..also the walk to the parking lot or using it at the airport was very usefull..i only took a folding umbrella one but i'm doing it again this yr for Univ.i hear the parking lot is actually a mile away....after a long day, when i'm tired to... forget it.. it's a lifesaver.:sunny:
