Strategy for 2 days one night in universal with express plus

We arrive at Universal from Disney mid-week this week. We don't see the point in trying to get there for park opening on first day because we have to check into the hotel to leave bags, get express passes etc. We have 2 park tickets each day.

We are staying at portofino, so we get the express pass plus. We are thinking that we will do a rope drop for Hagrid on the second day with early entry.

Any other tips for the first day, considering we'll be getting to the park late morning? Will we be doomed to have huge waits for velocicoaster? Will having the express plus make everything else pretty easy?

Biggest draw is Harry Potter so looking for advice to plan each of the 2 days accordingly.

We aren't all day park people either. Will be trying to get back to hotel by early afternoon.

VC now takes Express, but the lines for it aren't nearly as bad as Hagrid. For rope drop - make sure you get to the entrance at least 30 minutes prior to EE time, if not earlier depending on the day of the week (Saturday you should get there earlier). They open the gates about 10 minutes early and then its just a speed walk to Hagrids.

With EP - you will not have to worry about doing all the things you want over two days.
