Stop Spoiling Olympic Results!

The Olympics are live news, not a TV program.

This reads like you're still trying to compare it to other things. Not having spoilers for a show like "Lost" is totally different. That show isn't live.

I AM comparing it with other things and I totally disagree with you. I think the majority of people want to watch the highly televised Olympic events (like ice skating) on television when they are presented in their time zone and not know the results ahead of time. The events are televised "as if" they are live - otherwise they would announce the results right away and then show footage.

This thread has nothing to do with posts - it has to do with TITLES of threads. There is a protocol here that expects people to be respectful and thoughtful of others. Every community has rules and this is one of them here. This board has functioned well with spoilers for a few years now. It's dissapointing to see them back.

There is nothing in the DIS Guidelines about putting spoiler warnings in titles. If anything is against guidelines it's comments like this --

THANK YOU FOR #$#%$## THE SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-- by someone upset about a warningless spoiler that violates the DIS guidelines. There is no excuse for flaming someone like that.

Yes, spoiler warnings are a common courtesy that all should respect on this and other discussion boards. In this day and age when the major networks are not the only outlets for information and anyone can share news on forums such as this, it's impossible to avoid spoilers.

Besides, it wasn't a spoiler. The event already happened, had been broadcast live in many areas, and reported on multiple news sites. Just because it had not been aired in prime time broadcast time 8:00 PM eastern time doesn't make it a spoiler. Fictional programming is easier to attach spoiler warnings to, but not so with current events.

Should people put spoiler warnings in the titles? As a courtesy, yes. Is it mandatory? No. In any event, that does not excuse flaming someone for wanting to be the first to share news.

The real live coverage happened hours before and the majority of the world is keeping up with things as they happen.

Saying people shouldn't talk about the results is like saying people shouldn't talk about news until after 6:00 so everybody can watch it as the networks show it all "as if" they are telling you everything for the first time.

So...bottom line it for me here...We (those of us that don't wish for things to be "spoiled") are out of line by asking that results not be put in the title of the threads?

JMHO, yes. I'm not going to go out and do the opposite, mostly because I have no interest in starting threads about the results, but I do feel it's no different than any other piece of news. Can't spoil something that has already happened. IMO it's asking more than what's necessary, people should be able to talk freely about the results.

I follow lots of TV threads here and I feel the same way about episodes that have already aired. You won't see me going off because somebody spoils something after an episode has already aired. It's up to me to avoid things until I have watched.

In the case of the Olympics, once the decision comes down, that episode has aired.

Exactly. I mean, it'd be nice if all threads had a spoiler warning, but there's also personal responsibility. Don't want to know? Avoid places you can get that info - and with the Olympics, it's everywhere.

I didn't want to know who died last December-ish on Lost until I watched my Tivo, but stupid Headline News spoiled it for me. How the heck is someone dying on a fictional island Headline News? But I got over it, because, well, it's a fictional island.

bump... its happening... sort of again.

I don't care if people post spoilers... all I ask is that they respect those of us who don't want to know by hitting return a couple of times. Granted, I also know that this isn't going to happen.

Flame throwers should be ashamed of yourselves. I believe the OP on that thread was a kid or teen. Give her a break.

pug: I assume you were referring to the OP of the other thread. I'm 29.

More than likely Goofysk8 is a teen. She has spent a lot of time on the teen disney board which leads me to believe this is a young girl. She posted on this thread about which doll she most looks like:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=11518076#post11518076 If you read through most of her posts they are very inocent and sweet. It's a shame she got slammed like this! Maybe next time check out who your bashing before such harsh things are posted. A nice PM would have been better. She loves dolphins and ice skating and horses! :worried:

The people who lashed out at her so harshly should be hanging their heads in shame. How unDisney of you!!

I think the way a lot of people reacted to her "spoiler" thread was ridiculous and uncalled for!! This could be a 12 or 13 year old. There's just no excuse for some of the mean comments made! We all have to remember that there are children lurking on these boards. Let's show them some Disney spirit!!

YourMajesty- sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm not watching them live on TV. I'm following along on-line at NBCOlympics.com. I just keep hitting refresh every so often and voila! Immediate results. Let me know if you want the link....

Thanks for the link MegaDisney...I guess I'm on the spoiler side..not that I want to spoil it for anyone else. I couldn't get the ice dancing results and I know they were final. Maybe I wasn't looking at the right sites but many were not telling.... I do think it's a bit unrealistic to expect people not to talk about something that happened many hours earlier(spoiler title or not)...who knows what time zone everyone is in...you would probably leave someone out....what's the time zone in Hawaii? :duck:

I've been following this thread with amusement... but I just have to say:

I don't really understand what the big deal is in asking people not to put results in the subject line of a thread? Results in the body of the post is fine.... but how about leaving them out of the title?

I think that's reasonable, and I think some people are being argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative. But then again, what else is new on the Dis?

Val, I don't think it is the request that anyone is objecting to, I think it was the fact that a bunch of people flamed the heck out of a poster (a young teen) who mistakenly posted the results in a title. It was totally rude, childish and uncalled for.

Wow this is the second time in a week that I have been absolutely floored by what I saw on this board and the second time it has related to the Olympics. When will they be over so sanity can resume?

As for those who have cursed out the OP of the one thread and demanded an apology from her I feel should apologize to her yourself. She was a young adult who was OBVIOUSLY excited about the results of a sport she follows. The language that was used to get around the profanity filters (yes i have read the guidelines) to curse her out was ridiculous.

I feel that it is a courtesy to say spoiler in the title-courtesy but not a requirement. If you don't want to know the results of the games you really need to live in a bubble, or go around with your fingers in your ears going LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA. On the way home from work my radio station gives a warning before the launch into the daily results BUT when I change the radio station without fail I find another station that is discussing them so it's no longer a secret. THen on tv they will flash the results. On the internet the top stories are about athletes and how they have performed. I personally refuse to live in a bubble if I hear the results great when I watch I can pay attention in a different way. I can look at how they got there instead of being on pins and needles to see who won.

I think the DIS should be safe place for everyone to gather. I have seen the DIS boards as following Walt's dream internet style by creating a place where families can gather together to talk about their Disney passion but it loses that safety when the young adults and kids are reamed out for an honest mistake. I just hope that the OP of the original thread continues to come back and does not take what was "yelled" at her to heart, and that she continues to love the games and engage in conversation about them.

Is it okay to talk about the Opening Ceremonies? After all, someone on the CB may have TIVO'd it and not watched it yet.

Get a life. You don't want to know the results, turn off anything that may convey information. That includes the computer. People are excited and write about things they are impacted by when they see it. Not when you see it.

This joint gets nuttier every day.

If this were posed as a request, I'd have no problem. However, some people went to the point of stating this was a rule. :confused3 That's where I think this thread crossed the line. Ask for whatever you want, but be prepared to manage your expectations when someone doesn't follow all the rules -- especially the unwritten ones.

Someone asked for this to be bottom lined, so this is how I would bottom line things (with lots of added editorial :teeth: )

Bottom line:

No one has the right to tell anyone on the CB what to say or post except the DIS Moderating Team, the WM's and Pete himself. We all like different ways that people post on the boards. We all dislike different ways people post on the boards. I don't care who posts what about any televised event or show, in the title or not. I do care how other posters are treated. I hate to see people get slammed and treated harshly for an innocent mistake. I don't have the right to say who can and who can't post that way, I can only make my opinions known about it, I can't tell people how or what to post.

No one has the right to ask for an apology for anything they've read on the boards except again the DIS Moderating Team, the WM's and Pete himself. Asking someone to apologize for being excited, being elated and making an honest mistake was going way too far in my books, but I don't have the right to tell anyone not to post that, I can only make my opinions known about it.

Putting spoilers in the title of a post is not against DIS guidelines. Flaming someone and going around the word filter are both offenses that are against the DIS guidelines, they have gotten people banned in the past, but I don't have the right to tell anyone not to post like that, I can only make my opinions known about it.

Respect and courtesy go a long way, as do friendly PM's. This situation, where an exhuberent young person, who loves her sport, who was bursting at the seems to post about it, was chewed out over an innoncent mistake. It took me all of three seconds to look at her name, open her profile and see what she was all about. I knew immediately she wasn't a mean, nasty, troll looking to spoil all of your fun, but instead I found her to be a sweet person excited about life, who didn't deserve to get flamed the way she did and all I could do about it was let my opinions known and try to support her.

I think those of you who are watching this "spoiler" thing go awry on the DIS for the first time, or maybe the umpteenth time, should maybe take this as a fair warning. Sometimes people are new to the boards and they make mistakes, sometimes those of us who are not so new are people who are bursting with excitement at some great news (or not so great news like deaths and tragedies) and this "spoiler" thing is going to happen over and over and over again, by several different posters maybe, and maybe all at the same time. It's the way of the DIS (as is the flaming and bashing of posters for making innocent mistakes). It's going to happen again. And these types of threads will happen again. It's the DIS ... different day, same ol' stuff. :duck: :hyper: To avoid this kind of thing, or to avoid the fall out like these threads, all we can do is avoid the CB until it's over and we know it's safe, no spoilers can bother us. :confused3

People are people, they're human, they're filled with life, with flaws and with ways of doing things that we don't always like. In my opinion it's up to us to do what we like and let others be as long as they aren't harming anyone else. And being happy and trying to share that happiness isn't harming anyone.

Peace. :smokin:

Pam pulls up a chair beside Maggie, gives her a big old "Atta girl" pat on the shoulder and then bums a drag on her :smokin:

I have one question - why are you dragging your cursor over the text of the message/headline if you know that you can read the first couple of sentences??

Well said, Maggie. It is just a shame that this thread has gone as far as it has. A mistake is a mistake. Yes, I do skate and I am proud of my hard work and accomplishments. Yes, I was excited about Tanith and Ben. Was it enough for some of the comments that I received? Probably not. I am done with this thread and I thank those of you that have stood up for what I said.
