We have been looking at the excursions and very interested in the snorkeling activities in Grand Cayman, especially one that includes a stop at Stingray City. We have been showing our DSs the photos and they both seem to "cringe" at these creatures. During both of our trips to DVC's Hilton Head, someone in the family has gotten stung by a stingray which is very painful.

My question is, "Why don't people get stung by the stingrays at Stingray City?" I have even seen photos of people holding them!!

Thanks!
Karen

The ones at Stingray City are not totally 'wild' creatures anymore, as they've been around humans for so long. As long as you don't step on them they are totally harmless. The ones that don't want contact will avoid people completely. it's a very safe experience, much more than encountering one in the wild.

Sting Rays only sting if they are stepped on it is an involuntary reaction as they whip their tail up to try to get away. There is a barb on the end of the tail and that is what stings a person. At sting ray city the rays are swimming in the water eating the squid so there is very little chance of stepping on one hidden in the sand and therefore being stung. They are very gentle and appear to enjoy the contact with humans.
