Bryce had his state meet yesterday. He did a great job. Of course it was one of those meets were the awards were messed up. Some how the scores for his last rotation weren't entered into the computer, so Bryce and all of his teammates weren't placing. We had to stay 45 min. late to get it fixed. There were 72 kids in his age group ( 9 year-old level fives ).

Floor - 8.9 He fell on his front handspring.
Vault - 9.15 His best vault this season.
High Bar - 8.9 With no kip.
P-Bars - 8.4 He struggled on his back uprise.
Rings - 9.45 2nd place
Pommels - 9.45 2nd place

All Around 54.25 - 10th

I can't believe he got 10th out of 72 with a fall and no kip. This was not only his highest all around he has never even gotten a 53 before.

My dd went to IGC a couple of yrs ago and loved it. She hasn't been back though because of things just coming up - like vacation, our HC/O is not big on the kids going to camp, so you have to go the week off at the end of June and we tend to vacation that week. If it was up to dd, she would go back to camp in a heartbeat!

Thanks!!! My dd really wants to go and is willing to take the risk of upsetting HC. Her whole team is going to The Tops camp in Virginia but she went last year and wasn't all that impressed.She would prefer go here.

She was named the 2008 Level 2 6A State Bars Champion and State All-Around Champion. Woo hoo!!!

She did great! In Texas they don't even give the level 2-3's scores. They just get colors. The 4-5 achievements get scores but no ranking ( 9 up gets blue, 8 up gets red, etc. ) The girls don't start getting ranked until 5 placement and they only go to South or North State.

Hi All,
Just found this thread thanks to Barb. Here my info:

About you and your gymnast:My name is Kelly and my DD is Nicole who is 10 years old
How old was your child when they started gymnastics? She was about 4.5 - started out on the shooting stars (first class of team, next is pre-team)
What level are they at now? She will be Level 6 First week of June, nobody moves up untill nationals is over.
Do levels 1/2/3 compete in your area/state? In the state but not in our gym, they start at level 4
When is your "season"? Meets start in Oct to April but she never stops going - she's at the gym 18 hours a week
Do you have other kids? Are you juggling their activities too? I do have other kids - my DS the oldest is married and lives on his own, and my oldest DD is twenty and has her own life, hates coming to meets ect.
Do you follow gymnastics at the National level? Only if its on TV

The gym she goes to has two teams National and Local, my daughters on the national team -were we have to travel all over the US for meets. It can be costly but its alot of fun and she loves it.

Anybody else have to do alot of traveling and were do you go?

Texas is so big that you can do a lot a traveling and never leave the state. At my son's gym the girls don't leave the city until level 5 and they don't leave the state until level 7. The boys start leaving the city at level 4 but they don't leave the state until level 6 and that is only if they make regionals. The upper levels travel a lot.

Will do at least 2 fly meets a season, Past season we went to Chicago, Phonix AZ, and Cincinnati plus drive ones - Parketts PA- Brestain - MA Little Bigger- MA, Starlight Boston MA, Aquafina - CT, Pilgrim Meet MA, and 3 in state meets. This year there thinking of adding to the list a meet in Maryland.
And almost all of the team goes to Camp Woodward PA for a week in July, the drive there is a killer, 6.5 hours with out pee breaks and speeding on top of it. We have to get a room just to drop her off.

My last year meet/coaches ect fees where 1300.00 for the season. thats besides the 340.00 a month I pay to the gym and travel cost.

I'm SO glad we don't have to travel for meets! In the Dallas area, there are always plenty of meets within an hours drive. And I tell you, when the little darling does not do well at the meet, even a 15 minute drive seems to take forever!

We have to travel for all meets, about a 2 hour drive from Green Bay to Milwaukee. Next year at level 4 we should get one meet in town that the old gym DD went to started to host this year, other than that it will be Milwaukee, Chicago and Minnesota. There is even talk of a meet in Las Vegas as one of the graduating optional girls will be going to Southern Utah.

Our gym usually competes within an hour's drive (or so, depending on where you live), although we do go to Hilton Head in January, which is about 5-6 hours away. DD did that for the first time this year and loved it, although gymnastics-wise, it was her worst scoring meet. She was so excited about staying at a hotel that she couldn't sleep. hehehe

DD12's last meet ever was yesterday...sort of a sad ending to a sad season that she never wanted to compete.

DD started off great-she got a 9.55 on Floor. 9.0 on vault which, though not great, was her best vault score of the season. She had a great warmup on bars, then fell when she was competing, for a 7.9. She also fell on beam, for an 8.4.

The only thing she placed in was floor. Even that was sad. I had been watching the scores and knew there was a 3 way tie for 3rd. They didn't even announce it as a tie. (They usually say, "Tying for 3rd and receving
5th....") They just announced it as 5th, so she didn't even know how well she had done. Her teammate placed on vault (not at the bottom either) with a 9.050 and DD didn't, so there must have been ties in there, too. She was the only girl on the team that didn't place in the AAs. But, her team did win first in the team competition.

The coaches were sweet to us and to her with their goodbyes. I guess they ought to be since they've known her since she was four. (Actually, I think it's the first time in 8 years that the head coach HAS been sweet to her.) She will still see a lot of the girls and coaches. She'll be going to a weekly tumbling class for cheer at the gym that starts when gymnastics is letting out.

I don't think she has grasped yet how much her life will change. Today she will come home right after school. I don't think there has been a Monday where she has come home right after school since she has BEEN in school!

Of her group of six Level 7s, she is the only one officially retiring at this time. Recall that they were competing TAAF (a lesser Texas league) instead of USAG level 7 because they didn't have their giant (even though they had trained it for over a year.) By the end of the season, two of the girls got their giants-but three still don't. Two of the three are otherwise terrific gymnasts...wonder what will happen next season.

The meet yesterday was TAAF State. There were few enough Level 7s that they only needed one session. There were about 40 Level 7s. They combined it with Level 8. There were THREE Level 8s. I guess that the girls either get good enough to compete USAG, or they retire, too. I was thinking that, whether they have made the decision now or now, a lot of the girls we were seeing at the meet would not be competing again.

Good luck to your dd with cheerleading, her floor score was awesome!

I understand how you feel about her last competition and even practice, but it seems like she has already moved on and at least she will be able to apply what she has already learned in her next journey!

That's the truth. She loves cheer (I don't. Do I have to join the cheer parents thread?) and wants to take even more dance classes than she does now (she's done 8 years of tap and jazz). She wants to cheer in middle school then do drill team in high school.

Sounds to me like she is way over gymnastics....

I say you can stay here and not have to jump over to the cheer parents thread - but we may not always know what you are talking about! Just speak clearly and slow....

It doesn't sound like you will be putting any money back in your pocket with all the stuff she has lined up already.

That is so true. We've bought the cheer clothes and the cheer camp clothes and paid for cheer camp. Then there's volleyball camp this summer, and the extra dance classes...

NOw a year later she is competing JOGA( I guess comparable to TAFF) and she doesn't need them. I don't think she'll miss gymnastics. She's had two competition seasons where floor was her only strong event. It's really not fun to not place at meets. She will miss the girls at the gym. They range in age from 4 to 18, so it's not like she will really socialize with most of them outside of gym. But like someone said, the next chapter.

She'll just do school cheer. She'll also do 7th grade athletics. I hope she's not disappointed in that. She is very athletic, but she doesn't do any of the sports that they compete in school. I've told her that while she's been devoting her life to gymnatics, other girls have been doing these other sports since they were little. She has very (VERY!) long legs...if you've been at a Texas meet where she's competed, you've noticed her I'm sure. Once the cross country and track coaches see those legs, I'm sure they will latch onto her.

She'd love to join a dance company, but there's really not time with athletics and cheer....or else she'll be gone more hours than with gymnastics. The dance studio has been lobbying to get her in company for years (her big sister is in company) but truth be told, she would be placed in a lower company than the other girls her age because they've been in company since they were 4 or 5.

We'll see how it all pans out. I don't think we'll have a problem with her not having enough to do. I asked her yesterday how long she thinks it will take her to lose her 6 pack abs...she swears she's going to stay in as good a shape as she is now!

Since almost all of our gymnasts are not in competion time I was just checking to see how everyone is doing on prepping for the next level. DD will be level 4 and hit her front hip tonight. So she just needs to move the ROBHS from the TT to the floor, get consistent with her mill circle, be able to cut her leg back after the mill circle, and get her level 4 vault, then she has all of her level 4 skills. She will not compete until Jan '09, so she should be good to go.
