That's good Barb. Working in the store should be fun. Is it for one week?

I just got back from my son's meet at George R. Brown Convention Center. Was anyone else there? It was a huge meet. There were two sets of equipment for boys and girls, so four at a time. Plus they had a cheer and a volleyball competition going on at the same time. Parking was hard.

Well Bryce did very well. He tied for 1st on rings and took 2nd and he tied for 2nd took 3rd on pommel. He took 14th all around. He still doesn't have his kip and he missed his back uprise on P-bars so I think 14th is awesome. There were 42 kids in his age group.

:thumbsup2 :cheer2:    :cool1: :cool1:

DD12 has told us that she wants to retire after her meet on Saturday. It's the last scheduled meet of the season. She's lost her drive but knows she will miss her team mates, some of whom she's been working out with since they were 4! She has to give one months notice...she wanted to just quit, but we'd have to pay for the month anyway, so we told her she needs to go for the last month. She just made cheerleader, so I'll ask the coach (who also teaches cheer class) if she can work on mostly tumbling during the last month.

Okay folks. Tomorrow evening is going to be DD's last gymnastics meet, probably EVER. I'm sure she won't get emotional, but I wonder if I will???

*Hugs* I hope it goes well for you and her both.

Good luck to both of you. I can't imagine what a hard day this will be for both of you. :grouphug:

How did it go? Best of luck to her with her new cheerleading career. Keep us updated on how it is going.

My daughter doesn't do gymnastics, but competes in power tumbling (trampoline, double-mini, tumbling). I know some gyms do both (USAG, USTA, AAU). This is the closest thread I can find, so do any of your gyms compete this too?

Welcome newbie2disney! Our gym doesn't compete power tumbling, but Ryan Walsh who won worlds on synch. tramp, I believe, is from here and worked at our gym until Christmas. He didn't train there because the ceiling was too low, LOL. He's now at the Olympic Training Center.

BTW, took DD to the SEC Gymnastics Championships on Saturday. All 7 SEC programs are ranked in the top 25 NCAA, including 3 of the top 6. It was AWESOME! It was the first time DD had been to a competition other than her own. If you have a chance to go to a college meet, I highly recommend you go.

I agree about the college meets. They are so high energy and fun. One thing that is great for the girls to see is that the gymnasts are real women with real womens' bodies-breasts, thighs, curves. When we watch the Olympics on TV, we get the impression that to be good you have to be 4'8" and weigh 70 lbs. It's great fun to see other body types-their bars can be so powerful because they have so much strength!

Yes I totally agree with this. Body image is very important to girls so I like for them to see that gymnasts come in all sizes.

So....the last meet....one that is best forgotten! DD's regular coach wasn't there because she was at State with the level 9s. On beam, as DD got ready for her back walk over, the coach stepped up as if to spot her. This freaked her out and made her fall. She hasn't fallen on that all season. After the meet she was saying that she couldn't figure out why he was there and was scared he was going to touch her and make her lose points, so in the middle of all the worries, she did fall.

Floor scores were nuts. She ended up coming in 10th with a 9.1. Even among our team, the scores were nuts. The girl with the most blah, lack of energy routine in our gym came in 2nd and none of our girls messed up. It was nice for that girl to do so well, since she hasn't the rest of the season, but my husband and I have concluded that judged sports drive us nuts.

DD developed a severe stomach ache during the meet. Second meet in a row. That's when you know it's time to retire.

She fell off bars-1st time all season.

She didn't place in the AA-1st time all season.

The great thing about DD is that within half and hour she was laughing and being her old self again.

SO....last night we got an email from the gym, saying they had decided to do TAAF state, when they originally hadn't planned to. They wanted to know if DD wanted to go; she does, so now we have another "last meet ever."

AWWW what a shame. I think it is tough for the girls when they don't have their reg coach with them. I know when our head coach isn't there my daughter seems to not do as well.

Well she has another shot to have her last meet ever. Hopefully this will be a good one and she will go out with a bang.
One of our team girls had decided WOGA was going to be her last meet ever. SHe had the meet of her life. SHe beat girls who had been 2 full points ahead of her all season. SHe also scored her 1st 9 on bars that season and got a 9.3 without Giants(level 7). Anyway she said she was just so relieved for it to be over that she had fun. Ironically she came back to gym a week later but drastically cut her hours.
I hope the TAAF meet goes well.
