Steak?

Never had it. But my wife's nephew posted tonight that he was BBQing a couple of Wagyu steaks. I didn't realize there were $166 a pound! Oh, and my wife's nephew lives in Texas, or at least he did until the Texas Cattle Industry runs him out of state! :crazy2:

We've had Wagyu at a high-end steak house in Mexico. If I recall it was about $70USD for a 6oz. cut. We just ordered it as a novelty and honestly, I'd never do it again. I hated it; all it tasted of was tallow. :crazy2:

I've not ever had it but with a Costco price of $166 a pound, I'm thinking, for me, not worth it.
It was $100/lb when I saw it. NY strip I recall. But it was easy to spot. The marbling is insane.

Had a Wayou hotdog on the Caesars Palace Buffett.

Tasted like a hotdog. Seemed like poor use of special beef.
What was it though? There are tons of variations, including hybrids. I think it’s about more than the fat. The protein is supposed to have excellent flavor.

I had it in a restaurant in Kobe Japan back in the 80s. It was amazing. I buy American Wagyu from an Oregon farm that bought Wagyu cows back when Japan allowed it. It's 100%, not a hybrid like most, but also not the same as A5 Wagyu. Delicious, though, and we eat it in Japanese BBQ (yakiniku). We were thinking of buying the Costco Wagyu for Christmas. The stuff at my Costco is already thinly sliced, so all set for bbq. Having a whole steak of it just seems gross to me--it's meant to be sliced very thinly and cooked tabletop in yakiniku, shabu shabu, or maybe sukiyaki. A serving should be a couple ounces, so a single steak should serve many.

For my money, there is no better bang for your buck than hangar steak. It's still cheap when compared to other "fancier" cuts right now....at about $14.99 lb. My butcher sells about two pounds in vacuum sealed bags....it's two steaks, but enough for four people. Doesn't require marinating like a flat or skirt.....just bring it room temperature, I rub the steaks with a little olive oil, then salt and pepper and then on to a searing hot grill (500-600 degrees). About 5-7 minutes per side depending on the size of the steak...we like medium rare so it's usually 5-6 minutes a side. Then rest it for 10 minutes....covered in foil. It's perfect every time, and so much more flavor than a filet mignon that is $20 more per pound right now.

One of my tech vendors sent us A5 Wagyu and there was a Zoom meeting to teach us how to cook it right.

A fun and delicious treat, but not something I'm going to spend money for in normal life. It was seasoned with only salt and pepper.

They didn't BBQ it. They did it in a cast iron pan so that the grease could be caught. The guy who was showing this said that he saves the grease and uses it like butter on toast, or to flavor other items.

I guess it was Buffet grade. It really seemed like a gimmick.

When Bacchanal reopened at Caesars Palace an added feature is roaming dim sum carts. The night we visited the carts were offering the minnie hot dogs, about half the size of a normal hot dog.

I only know the cart attendant said it was Wagyu beef. Not sure from where. A quick Google finds lots of options for Wagyu beef hot dogs in the $10-$11 a pound price range. Surely more than an Oscar Mayer Wiener, but that much better? It really didn't taste any different than any other hotdog.

Costco has this:
593313
It's for 12 lbs, the price averages out at close to $79.00 per lb.
(Oh! And UPS Next Day delivery is included! Lol)
