Static electricity and flyaway hair

Kind of budget board related. I started using vinegar instead of fabric softener in the laundry last fall due to comments I found here, and I've been really happy with it until this winter.

It now seems that I have huge problems with my hair just sticking out all over when I put on or take off fleece sweatshirts. And it stays sticking out.

My clothes don't seem to "cling" to me -- it's just the hair that goes all crazy.

Does that static guard spray that comes in the can work? Do you just spray it on your clothes that seem to cause the problems? Or can you spray that in your hair? Or should I just got back to the fabric softener? I've tried using drying sheets (the Aldi's brand), and that doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions?

I use static guard only when critically necessary---it stinks!

As for hair--I usually dress while my hair is still wet and do not have that issue.

Cold water lightly applied to the air is the trick I learned and still use when I happen to get static fly aways.

I would NOT use static guard in hair. But it works great on clothes.

A tiny dab of conditioner run through your hair will get rid of the static too.

I also get dressed while my hair is still wet so I don't have a problem with static electricity in my hair. But when I do, I rub hand lotion on my hands until it's almost gone. Then I rub my hands lightly on my hair and it's all gone :)

Oh, I LOVE Static Guard spray! I'm allergic to fabric softener, so I swear by the spray. I don't use any fabric softener in my washer or dryer.

I spray it right on my clothes, and on my hairbrush before I brush my hair. Not a heavy spray, more like a mist or spritz. I also occasionally spray a bit right in my hair. It does have a scent when wet but is odorless when dry. I'm sensitive to scents, but it is really odorless when dried despite the wet scent.

It's great stuff.

I use conditioner everyday after shampooing, and never get static hair. But, if I were to get static in my hair, I would take a dryer sheet and rub it all over my hair. It cuts the static way down to nearly nothing at all. Rub it on the brush repeatedly too. Just keep rubbing it all around in your hair until you get some control over the static, brush hair then hairspray. :thumbsup2

I have also recently heard of the using a dryer sheet tip, the problem for me is that I don't haven't bought any dryer sheets in years and I keep forgetting to buy them at the store. But, it supposedly works wonders. I also heard that if you are wearing a hat to tuck one inside the head as it will help keep your hair static free when the hat comes off.

This. :thumbsup2 I just have to remember to buy some b/c a box lasts me years because I don't use it in the dryer!

I carry a dryer sheet in my purse (in a zip bag) to use, just in case. I also put one in DD's backpack at school so that she can use it once she takes her hat off, etc. The fly away hair in her face can be a huge distraction in school and brushing it away with her hand doesn't really work. :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the tips. I never thought of using a dryer sheet on my hair and hair brush. And I did pick up a can of that spray today too, so with all of your suggestions I should be in good shape.
