Starbucks lingo

Drink Sizes

Short: 8 oz. The smallest size Starbucks offers, and not generally shown on the menu. If you ask for a small, you will get a Tall, not a Short.

Tall: 12 oz. The small size.

Grande: 16 oz. This is the medium size. Pronounced GRAHN-day, more or less.

Venti: 20 oz. hot, 24 oz. cold. For some reason iced Venti cups hold four more ounces; for this reason, Venti espresso drinks often have an extra shot of espresso in them, and cost a little bit more. Prounounced VENN-tee.

Trente: 30 oz cold. Only some drinks are available in this size, mostly variations on iced tea.

Basic Drinks

Coffee: Plain black coffee, brewed less than an hour ago. If you want them to leave room in the cup for milk, go ahead and ask. Also available in decaf and (sometimes) mild, which is a lighter roast.

Iced Coffee: Plain coffee, brewed double-strength so the ice wont dilute it, and kept in the fridge. Not just regular coffee poured over ice.

Tea: Starbucks has several varieties of tea: black, green, herbal, blends, decaf, you name it.

Iced Tea: Also available shaken (with ice). Comes in regular or passion, with or without lemonade, sweetened or unsweetened.

Caffe Misto / Cafe au lait: A drink consisting of half coffee, half steamed milk and a bit of foam. Can be made decaf, nonfat, etc. Misto is the Starbucks name, cafe au lait is the more general term.

Espresso Bar Drinks

Latte: Espresso, steamed milk, and foam. Not sweetened in any way unless you ask for syrup or sugar in it.

Cappuccino: Like a latte, only much more foam. Normally half milk or half foam, unless wet or dry is specified. This is also not sweetened.

Caramel Macchiato: Basically a vanilla latte with extra foam and gooey caramel drizzled on top. If it doesnt taste sweet enough when you first try it, be sure to stir it well! Caramel sauce doesnt really dissolve well in milk. If its still not sweet enough, ask for extra vanilla, not extra caramel. Macchiato, by the way, is pronounced mah-kee-YAH-toe.

Americano: Espresso diluted with hot water until its roughly the strength of regular coffee. An Americano will usually have one more shot than a latte of the same size. Sometimes if the regular coffee you want hasnt finished brewing yet and you dont want to wait, the barista may offer you an Americano instead.

Mocha: Espresso and steamed milk mixed with chocolate and served with whipped cream. Despite being chocolatey, these are not terribly sweet. If you dont want to taste the espresso, try asking for flavor syrup (such as orange or raspberry) or try a white mocha instead.

White Mocha: Espresso and steamed milk mixed with white chocolate syrup and served with whipped cream. These are a lot sweeter than regular mochas, but also a bit less healthy and a bit more expensive.

Toffee Nut Latte: A latte flavored with toffee nut syrup, which tastes & well, toffee-like. Originally introduced as a seasonal drink, it appears to have been permanently added to the menu.

Espresso: Just espresso, nothing more. A solo espresso is a single shot, which is a bit less than an ounce. A doppio espresso is two shots, a triple is three, and a quad is four.

Espresso Macchiato: Espresso dropped into a cup of milk foam, and only foam. Like a small, extremely dry cappuccino. These are ordered not by cup size, but by the number of shots.

Espresso Con Panna: Espresso in a big squirt of whipped cream. Also ordered by number of shots rather than cup size.

Non-Espresso Bar Drinks

Hot Chocolate: Chocolate and steamed milk, with a little bit of vanilla added, served with whipped cream.

Steamed Milk: Just steamed milk, usually with a bit of foam. Usually these are ordered with flavor syrup added, which used to be called a steamer but was changed to a creme when the creme Frappuccinos came out.

Chai Latte: Sweetened Chai syrup (tea, spices, and sweetener) added to steamed milk and hot water. If you dont want it so sweet or so milky, you can also get Chai made with a tea bag, which is black tea and spices without the extra stuff. Both versions have caffeine, since its made with black tea.

Steamed Cider: Apple juice / cider (not sure what the distinction is) steamed to a nice hot temperature. You can also get plain, cold apple juice.

Caramel Apple Cider: Steamed cider with cinnamon syrup, whipped cream, and caramel sauce.

Blended Drinks

These are cold, blended drinks, like a milkshake. They can be made with or without a coffee base, with most kinds of flavoring, and even with soy milk or a lower-calorie light base. Check the menu at your local Starbucks or ask someone there for suggestions.

Miscellaneous Extras

Foam: Fluffy milk foam produced when steaming. Lattes, macchiatos, and cappuccinos usually have this. You can always ask for for more, or less, or no foam at all.

Wet / Dry: These pertain only to cappuccinos. A normal cappuccino has about half milk, half foam. Wet means more milk, dry means more foam.
Whipped Cream: Made fresh from whipping cream, not the kind of stuff you get out of a can. If you really want whipped cream, or really dont, make sure you tell the person taking your order. Its a lot easier to write the info on the cup than try to fix it later.

Extra Hot: Some people like their drinks extra piping hot. Some people just want it to stay at a drinkable temperature for longer. Be very careful if you order this, you dont want to burn yourself! Anything over 170 degrees F may scald the milk, however.

140 degrees: Some people dont like their drinks so hot. This is about ten to twenty degrees cooler than the usual drink temperature nice and warm, but not hot.

Kids: Hot drinks for children can be no hotter than 130 degrees F. Keep this in mind if youre saving money by ordering a kids hot chocolate.

Trente: 30 oz cold. Only some drinks are available in this size, mostly variations on iced tea.
You can also get iced coffee and refreshers in that size. They will not do a iced mocha in that size, but DH get around that by ordering an trente iced coffee with 2% milk and some pumps of mocha.
Basic Drinks][/b

You forgot refreshers - Wild Berry Hibiscus and Cool Lime. They are made with Green Coffee Extract (caffeine) - the wild berry has frozen berries, the lime has a lime slice in it. I prefer mine made with lemonade instead of water. Very refreshing on a hot day.
Toffee Nut Latte: A latte flavored with toffee nut syrup, which tastes & well, toffee-like. Originally introduced as a seasonal drink, it appears to have been permanently added to the menu
It has not been added all over the country. Our Starbucks does not offer it as a menu item. Different areas may have different specialty drinks - for example, late last fall Texas Starbucks offered a cranberry white chocolate mocha, it was not available in IL. I was so disappointed when we got back home and I couldn't get one.
One nice thing about Starbucks, if they have the syrup they will make a seasonal drink out of season. We get peppermint mochas and peppermint fraps year round even though they are seasonal (on the menu) for Christmas. As long as my local Starbucks had the dark cherry syrup, I was able to get (until the syrup's expiration date) a dark cherry mocha long after the dark cherry mocha was taken off the menu (they had ordered enough bottles for me as it was my all time favorite).

I can get my trenta Tazo iced tea for $3.29. That's not too much more than the normal price. Looks like they have a lot to offer, even if it's not the old MSB. Will they have sandwiches also?

Here's my question. Starbucks has a set of coffee cups called You are here. They are basically their ceramic stackin mug but themed to the city you are in (I have Vegas and NOLA).

I think there are 50 in the line. I wonder if Main Street will get its own cup?

Here are some examples.

My favorite travel mug is my Starbucks Bahamas mug - lots of great memories associated with it. I would love a Starbucks Main Street Bakery one.

Coffee, black. Large.

If it's first thing in the am after evening EMH, then its: me, coffee, strong, large, I beg of you...

Here's an interesting link about dark/light/more caffeine/less caffeine, etc:

http://coffeefaq.com/site/node/15

I usually get regular coffee with cream. When it's winter time and I'm out and about, I love the pumpkin spice latte...just too good.

I have been anxiously waiting for a special Disney cup to come out, even if it's just with the color character swirl they are putting on the disposable cups. Nothing yet, but maybe with more and more locations opening in the parks, they will manufacture some Disney designs for us to purchase!

Half caf, skinny vanilla, grande...etc. I don't speak Starbucks!:crazy2: Is there a quick course We can take prior to entering the Magic Kingdom? ;) All we want is a decent cup of coffee but we don't want to sound stupid doing it. pirate: (posted just for fun)
~I just read the first post, buy my only advice is not to ask for a large coke or any soft drink. There was a customer who didn't "get" the menu and did just that. It was like time stopped, the baristas immediately huddled into a circle, and then team leader emerged from the group to inform the customer that they don't serve soft drinks and there was a Speedyway on the corner. :rotfl:

~I guess there is a reason for no seating at the Starbucks Bakery on Main Street and why Disney will use CM's instead of baristas -- everyone knows the baristas don't play. You don't want to get on their bad side, because they'll write a song about you and post it on youtube. :rotfl:

~The Starbucks Rant Song Goes Viral~

~There's also a Starbucks blog dedicated to putting obnoxious and annoying customers on blast. I was expecting it to blow up with posts about Disney guests, but I guess that won't be happening. And, that's a good thing, lol.

I see your point about 'prententious', but I see it only relating to the lingo Starbuck's uses for sizes. Why the venti, etc? :confused3

That is exactly my meaning for using the word "pretentious". If in order to fit in I must memorize some make believe groupings of terminology when what I'm ordering is a small, medium or large coffee, then that is pretentious. Sorry, but that's what it is. There is no reason to do that unless one is trying to look like what they are doing is special or above the grasp of the unwashed masses.

I just order my coffee small medium or large. I refuse to pay their little game.

Perhaps I should point out that it's not actually "make believe groupings" Venti actually is the Italian word for "twenty" which would stand for 20 ounces which is exactly how much is in a Venti sized hot drink at Starbucks. Grande means large or great in many Roman languages. These aren't just "made up words". They existed long before the first Starbucks opened their doors.

Also, if you had done any research, you would know that when Starbucks first opened, they had two sizes. Short and Tall. VERY basic and easy to understand. However customers wanted bigger cups so the "Grande" size was invented. Short, Tall and Large sounded ridiculous so they settled on the name Grande.

However that still wasn't big enough for the customers so the Venti size was created. Short, Tall, Grande and Extra Grande sounded even more ridiculous so they went for the Italian terminology which describes the ounces of liquid in the cup.

Also, by your logic of "made up terminologies" being pretentious and wanting to appear above the grasp of the unwashed masses, I hope you don't go to Disney World and ask for a Magic Your Way ticket because guess what? That is a made up grouping of words. All you're actually purchasing is theme park tickets for 2 or more days. If you go to McDonald's, you can't buy a Happy Meal because that is a made up term for a childs meal. By that matter McChicken, McNuggets, Big Mac's, they're all made up words or phrases. They're really just Chicken Burgers, Chicken Nuggets and a Hamburger.

I'd LOVE a Starbucks & Disney themed tumbler or mug. They haven't done the DCA so here's hoping they'll have it at WDW

I would like a gratis venti aqua with pulverized ice.

Water with Crushed Ice, coming right up. (the tea on the left is for me :rotfl:)

Ah, Starbucks! I wound up being a barista for 5 years. And I'll tell you what, I definitely miss the constant caffeine buzz.

Want to impress anyone within earshot (and most assuredly the barista behind the counter) with your Starbucks ordering prowess? Here is the prescribed format:

- Do I want my drink iced?

- Do I want my drink decaf?

- Do I want any additional shots of espresso? (Solo = one shot, which is standard for both short and tall beverages; Double = two shots, standard for grandes and hot ventis; Triple = three shots, standard for iced ventis; Quad = four shots, standard for college students during finals week)

- What size do I want? (Short = 8oz, Tall = 12oz, Grande = 16oz, Venti = 20oz)

- Do I want a flavored syrup? (Vanilla, Sugar-free Vanilla, Hazelnut, Sugar-free Hazelnut, Caramel, Sugar-free Caramel, Cinnamon Dolce, Sugar-free Cinnamon Dolce, Toffee Nut, Peppermint, Raspberry)

- Do I want a particular kind of milk? (Nonfat, 2% - standard unless otherwise specified, Whole, Soy)

- Do I want any other modifiers? (Foam/no foam, specific temperature, whipped cream, drizzles, sugars/sweeteners, powered toppings, etc)

- What kind of drink is it? (Latte, Cappuccino, Mocha, White Mocha, Frappuccino, Skinny Latte = includes a sugar-free syrup and nonfat milk)

Examples:

- Iced / Triple / Grande / Whole Milk / Extra Caramel / Caramel Macchiato
- Quad / Venti / Peppermint / Extra Hot, No Whip / White Mocha
- Decaf / Grande / Nonfat / Cappuccino

... and the staple drink in my Starbucks diet
- Iced / Triple / Tall / Toffee Nut / Nonfat / Latte

But honestly, order however you'd like! The vast majority of baristas will be very understanding and guide you through things if you're stuck. If you're overwhelmed by the menu, just ask for help. They will come to your rescue! :cutie:

Research? Why do I need to research anything to figure out what size I would like to purchase. I already know what small, medium, large and Extra Large is, why do I need to know what the Italian word is for those?

And all of that would not be pretentious at all...if we were located in Italy and spoke the language. However, we do not. We use the English language or perhaps due to our demographic quite a bit of Spanish...Italian, not so much.

You were correct though, short, tall and large would have sounded ridiculous, however, small, medium, large or extra large, sounds a lot like our language doesn't it. Not ridiculous at all. Tells people exactly what they are getting. Inventing Grande is just support for my statement of "make believe groupings". The large size was invented many years before Starbucks rolled out the idea that calling it Grande or Extra Grande (venti).:snooty: And if they are going to follow that language, I doubt that the Italian word for Small is Short and Medium is Tall. One thing or the other that anyone can identify because it means something. OK, short could be interpreted to mean small, but you would have to search your mind a long time to see how Tall translates into Medium. To me it conjures up an image of something much larger then Medium. Back when you could order a small, medium, large or extra large without having to have an English to Starbucks dictionary handy, was not pretentious.

Happy Meals, McNuggets and Big Mac's are brand names identifying a specific kids, chicken and hamburg product, not the size of it. Big Mac does also indicate a size, but it isn't Grande Mac or Verdi Mac is it?

Magic Your Way, is a play on words that also are in the English language and created to name a promotion. I suppose they could have called it...Prestidigitation How You Desire. Enough days will help you to save a Grande to Verti pile of money.:rotfl:

You don't have to play.

I've been going to Starbuck's for years.

I don't drink anything with syrup in it, I've never had a latte, maybe twice a year I like an espresso.

When I order my coffee I order either a "small, medium or large", nobody has ever corrected me and I always get exactly what I want.

No biggie.
