This x 2187! After watching it the first time I thought it must have been some practical joke by the people sending out the film. Surely some people got to watch the gag film while others got the real one. I went to see it a second time to see if I had missed something(maybe this time I might get the real deal). Nope sadly I got Grouching Luke, Flying Leia again. Then I started talking to co-workers at work who are also long time Star Wars fans. Most hated it but those that did not were actively trying to convince themselves that it was a good movie. I think this is the case with a lot of people who are on the fence. They want to like it because it is Star Wars.
I see in several forums the whole "Fanboy had specific expectations in mind and when that didn't pan out, we hated it". I don't know about the other "fanboys" but I did have an expectation that this movie would build off the story line of TFA and to an extent RoTJ, ya know because it is basically Star Wars Part VIII. Instead Rian Johnson dumped on those movies(and fans of them) and chose to go with a script that appears to have been written with crayons by a first grader. The movie is an insult to fans of the Original Trilogy but it also an assault on the intelligence of those fans as well. Plot holes so big you could guide an AT-AT through them, Idiotic forced humour, and complete lapses in physics(even for a Star Wars movie) riddle this movie. Don't even get me started on the side plots that make zero sense, like the Bowling for Canto-Bight subplot.
The movie currently sits at 51% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and I think that has even been inflated to a degree. I know there are some rumours that someone is creating multiple accounts to tank this film on that site but after reading hundreds of pages of reviews I just don't see it. For the most part the negative reviews appear to be well thought out and well written. Also the movie is a full 200 million dollars behind TFA at the 15 day mark.
In conclussion, if this movie did not carry the Star Wars name and have a slew of characters returning from the Original Trilogy the first time any of us would have seen this movie is on MST3000, or maybe while grabbing a meal in the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre.
