Cliff Shots...Blech!
The only ones we've found so far that are kind of tasty are the PowerGel ones. Green Apple, Vanilla and Strawberry Banana are my favs!
I have never taken one before working out though. I use the bars about an hour before heading out. I used to chomp through the PowerBars, but I'm liking the Sinckers Marathon bars lately...they are more candy bar like (I do the crunchy one with chocolate on the bottom)
So....I do a bar an hour before the workout and then I gel around 40-45 minutes into the workout and every 40-45 minutes after that.
Hope this helps!!
Oh...another cool thing is the Sport Beans made by Jelly Belly...they are really tasty!! You could sub those for the gels.

yuk!!! Glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't like them!

I tried that one once and it was GROSS!!!

You're a trooper! I honestly don't know that I'll go for the long distance runs because I just don't think I could ingest any food or drink during a run.
My stomach would absolutely revolt! I think I may just stick to a 5-6 mile run for my longs (once I get back to that level
Looks like that is just going to part of my runnnig thing though. My pace today was 14:43 and my average HR was 177, peadking at 187. Again...my garmin was beeping at me the last few miles and Matt actually went for the 3 min-miles and when it would beep, he would make me walk... Part of the reason I walked more than I wanted.
To calculate your max HR, you take 220-your age, which would put my max at 192. I think there may be a different calculation on that so I may try to find it online. Supposidly there are 5 HR Zones. 5 being the top that you don't want to spend too much time in. You want it to be in Zone 3/4. Well, for my 2 mile run, 1.6 was in Zone 5 and for my 5 mile run, 4.4 was in Zone 5.
