Does anyone has a sure fire way of making these darn things. I have a cookie press by wilton but it was their cheap one, any tips on how to get the darn stuff out. I am getting frustrated, I thought this would be fun for me and my daughter but instead its a huge headache. please help. Thanks Dawn p.s. I already posted on the cooking board but I thought it might be faster over here. thanks

I have a basic spritz gun and never have a problem. I believe you have to make sure the dough is chilled. If I remember correctly the dough is thick and not sticky. Check your recipe and look for a couple of recipes on line. Try switching which disc you are using. Some come out better then others.

it can be hard. i have the old fashioned press kind (inherited from my mom) and it can get frustrating. the guns are a lot easier.

with the presses you have to get a rhythm down. have someone hold the cookie sheet while you do it. even then some will not turn out great. just take the dough from the bad ones off the sheet and try again. :)

I have two recipes. The one which calls for an egg always sticks and frustrates me no matter how cold the dough is.

The recipe without the egg is foolproof and the cookies turn out picture perfect.

If you need the recipe, let me know.

I don't know about the OP, but I need your "foolproof" recipe. I have had one of these contraptions for years and have never had any success!!!! Please share.

yeah gina, please post the recipe. i always assumed it was the press since i have never had problem with the gun, but i am willing to try something that will make my life easier come holiday time. :)

Here ya go, ladies!

Freddie's Cookie's (named for my DH....his grandmother made these all the time)

1 lb butter (unsalted)

1 cup sugar

4 cups flour

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Mix. Load chilled press. (And I will chill the dough if it is really soft and while cookies are baking).

Bake at 350 til slightly colored on the bottom.

Let cool on baking sheet.

Eat.

I'm definitely willing to try the foolproof recipe! These are my favorite cookies, but I can never make them right. They never stick to my cookie sheet, when I lift the press/gun the dough comes up with it. Thanks for the recipe!!

These are my specialty cookie. The receipe I use has egg in it and I find that if the dough is a bit on the sticky side I just add a bit more flour. Also use only large eggs.....any other size will make the dough either too stiff or too soft. Also make sure that your cookie sheet is chilled and clean. Any grease on it will make the cookie not form correctly. I wash each sheet between bakings...yes it is a LOT more work, but reduces the frustration. chilling the sheet makes the slightly warmer dough stick to it and pull away from the gun. I use a battery operated gun that is just the best. I also have difficulty with any other kind of press. The old fashioned crank ones work pretty good, but are hard on the arms. Good luck.....if you want my receipe I'll gladly post it!

they have battery operated cookie presses, how cool, i was thinking on getting the stainless steel one but now I am interested in the battery operated one. Thanks for the recipe. I will try again, maybe we will just stick to gingerbread houses this year for our craft.
