I posted on this last week. I think dh actually has this figured out and that's why he suggested we go see this movie. He never wants to see a movie, believe me.

Here's what I could find on Rotton Tomatoes, a quote by Jerry Bruckheimer:

"Apparently the original trilogy will remain a self-possessed unit, but that doesn't mean there couldn't be a few spinoff titles. Here's what the producer told The Herald Sun: "This is the end [of the current trilogy], but whether one of the characters or a couple of the characters continue on, it’s a possibility ... Certainly, in a moment at the end of the film there is a hope that something else might happen."

So...what does THAT mean? Which ending do you think he's referring to? Hmmm.....

From an internet search, here's what I found:

The quote from the writers I was gonna share with you is: "The captain of the Flying Dutchman curse can be broken and that's why Davy Jones was so furious with Calypso. If the captain's true love is waiting for him when he comes ashore after 10 years the spell is broken and he is no longer bound to the ship - he's free to live a normal mortal life on land again. A new captain is chosen to continue the 10 year cycle. When Davy returned to shore after the first 10 years Calypso was not there to meet him. The curse was not broken and he was doomed to remain captain for eternity. SO when Will comes back after the first ten years (since Liz is waiting for him with their son) the spell is broken and Will can join his family for the rest of his life."

My DH says he is going to write Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski a thank you letter;) :rotfl:

I think they are referring to the Fountain of Youth possiblity.

THANK YOU!!! I am so happy I found this thread...I missed the last scene (which I was just able to watch 10 minutes ago :thumbsup2 ) and was upset about the ending. I feel much better knowing he can stay on land with his family...now my life can go on :teeth:

I wish I got the same thing that he gets to stay with his family, but my understanding was he gets one day on land every 10 years. You would think that the writers would have made it more clear if they wanted you to believe that. I don't know, that was the only part of the movie I did not like because the romantic in me wanted Will and Elizabeth to be together.

On the other thread Verbinski or Bruckhemimer (can't remember which) is quoted as saying there was a scene deleted that explains that if Elizabeth is faithful then the curse is broken and Will comes home for good.

Seems like an Awfully important scene to cut though!

The quote from the writers I was gonna share with you is...
You know, I'm no slouch when it comes to using the Google and such... and while I've seen that quote repeated on many message boards, I've yet to see any attribution to the original article where they're actually quoted saying that.

Here's what the IMDB has to say in it's FAQ:
There has been considerable debate among fans as to whether Will is free of the curse after ten years have passed. Some state that in interviews, the writers have indicated that in was their intention to convey to the audience that this is the case. These fans also assert that the green flash (seen when the Flying Dutchman sails into the horizon and upon its return 10 years later) indicates the return of a soul from the afterlife. Other fans believe that the curse is in effect since there is no dialogue or action in the film that would lead the audience to believe that a lover's faithfulness over the course of the ten year separation guarantees that the curse will be broken. These fans assert that the green flash indicates only that the passage from one realm to another, and that the flash does necessarily mean that Will has returned to land permanently.

Perhaps the question will be settled by the release of the DVD (in director's or writer's commentary), or in a possible sequel.

To add some input from Capricarius' answer: recalling the conversation between Will and his dad when Will was about to meet up with Elizabeth on the island, Bootstrap was saying how steep a price he has to pay - 10 years, and just one day. Will replied something like - "Then it all depends on that one day." I'd like to think that if there's a hint that the curse would be lifted if Elizabeth were to show up 10 years after, that would be it.

However, since Will's father clearly states "There must ALWAYS be a Captain of the flying dutchman, we can clearly see that the film suggest that Will's curse can never be lifted unless his heart is stabbed by someone else.

One must also note that the above so-called hint is stated by someone who would have no way of having any prior knowledge of the effects of the curse.

Finally, it should be noted that the directer has the most say over the interpretation of the plot rather than the writers. In other words, all of what the writers have stated are meaningless.

Here's what the IMDB has to say in it's FAQ:

I searched quite a while trying to find the original interview everyone keeps referring back to; however, I kept getting PMs from people on the boards saying they had read the writer's original/source interview, and that was, in fact, what they said.

So, when all I could find was that huge paragraph I quoted, I went ahead and posted here just to let everyone see what was floating around on the Web.

Truth be known, unless we find the actual trascript of the original/source writer's interview, then you are right--we will really never know if the spell is broken. Or...as stated above, we will have to wait for the DVD and commentaries....

I particularly wanted to know because I thought the same thing about Bootstrap's comments....and Will's response ("Then it depends on that one day."). The green flash of light, IMHO, appears more often than it should if it is signaling only the return of souls from the dead. I think it is signaling moving from one realm to another. (Why else would it flash when Will leaves Elizabeth and the island?)

We ALL want the spell to be broken and for the movie to have a happy ending. I think there is a lot more to this than what is seen on the surface.

For instance, I found an interview on the web with one of the writer's, and in it, he was talking about four clues in the 2nd movie that foreshadow or let the viewer know that Jack is going to die at the end of the movie.

He listed them all out and, yes, looking back, I can see it very clearly, but I don't think I EVER picked them up in the movie itself.

I think the writer's tuck in a lot more than we can ever fully realize. Do a Google search on the two writers, and you will find interviews that show you this.

Do you mean Will? Or were they originally going to kill off Jack, and then changed their minds?

It was an interview for the SECOND movie and Jack getting "eaten" by the Cracken.....

:goodvibes

Ohhh, OK, I gocha now! With all my angst about Will dying, I kinda forget that Jack died too!

Before your last post (when I was still thinking that there were four clues in DMC that foreshadowed Will's death in AWE) I was trying to think of what the clues could be, and I remembered that Tia Dalma had told Will in DMC that he "had a touch of destiny" about him. Anyone remember that? Now I guess we know what she meant.
