As I have not been in over 20 years and this time have a 5 year old.

Which would you suggest and why (financial motivations excluded)?

A) 3 Nights Value and 3 Night Poly Split Stay
B) 6 Nights at a Moderate Resort

We have a car, are going in September, and plan on taking breaks in the afternoon.

3 value/3 poly. Pop as my value of choice, preferred room.

The poly is just so beautiful, monorail access, and volcano pool! Not to mention bigger rooms, and DOLE WHIPS. Oh and wishes from the beach! I'd end on the poly. The mods don't thrill me.

We've talked about split stays, and it never seems to make sense for us. Not only would we have to pack everything up and unpack, there's always the variable of not being 100% happy with the room assignment when you get to the next resort (which has happened to us at least 3 times so far). If that happens, you lose even more time.

We love the mods, and would pick CBR and CSR over Wilderness Lodge any day. We'd love to stay at some of the true deluxes, but not enough to justify the overhead of a split stay.

Just curious - why not 6 nights at the Poly?

If money is the concern, you probably shouldn't talk to me, given my fiscal irresponsibility :)

LOL. Well for most part yes. Comparing 6 days of poly versus 6 days at moderates is not a very difficult question because of the cost difference. Then the answer is very simple, "Poly if you can afford it."

The split stay versus moderate resort is a lot closer in cost and much more difficult decision.

If you haven't been to WDW in 20 years, I would think you'd be very happy at a moderate. We absolutely love both CBR and CSR. Granted, Poly is our "dream resort", and if offered a free upgrade to the Poly, we'd take it in a heartbeat, but I never felt like I'm missing anything by not staying in a deluxe.

I think it all comes down to whether or not you mind the mid-week transition.

I just returned from a split stay between pop century and the yacht club and while it was a nice idea and gave us the opportunity to stay at a deluxe it wasn't very practical. We had to pack up our room and drove to the next resort and when we got there the room was ready but it was the last one on the hall so super far away. The big thing we didn't think about was sending packages because it is for the next day so if you were checking out the next day it is not recommended. I would go with one of the port Orleans resorts for practical reasons if that is your main concerns. But if your heart is set on the poly I would just go for it, it's not that bad and I overpack a ton. Guess I was much help then since I'm saying go either way

For 6 nights, I would go with a mod. Since you've not been in 20 years, I think you'll be perfectly fine in a mod.

I'm not opposed to split stays; we're doing one next year, but for a longer trip.

I am really torn. What concerns me about moderates goes back to having a 5 year old. Moderates seem to be more spread out with less kids theming and longer transportation times (Thus adding time to mid-day breaks) I expect to by far spend the most time at MK compared to any other park. That being said, I have not been in a long time and was curious to hear from more experienced people. It very well could be my concerns are not valid and it is not worth the hassle.

Our daughter was 5 the first year we stayed at Coronado. She loved it. The pool area there, and at Caribbean Beach, are both fantastic, and very kid-oriented. Same goes for POFQ and POR, though I prefer CSR and CBR to those for other reasons. POFQ probably has the most "Disney theming" of the four.

CBR also has a great "splash zone" pool area for the kids. Not sure if the POs have that yet.

Transportation also was, for the most part, not an issue. I didn't like that POR and POFQ shared buses, but haven't had many problems with CSR and CBR transportation.

I can give you my experience having stayed at all 3 price levels, and with children younger than yours (3 visits with a child under 3). Our first visit with a toddler we stayed at the Poly. It was great, loved being on the monorail and the grounds were nice. We got a GREAT deal, so paid less than most would have at that time. However, lets be honest, the price you pay for these rooms are not on par for the quality. Not as soundproof it didn't seem as the lower cost resort. They are still pretty spread out from the transportation and you were still walking outside to get to the lobby or whereever. We had to switch rooms due to a problem part-way through our trip due to issues with the room. Room quality was worse than some hotel I can get for $120 here in Minnesota. On a later visit, we decided to Pop Century. It was literally a realization of if we go Pop we can go now, if we stick with deluxe again, it's not going to happen. I was really worried going into it, but honestly, we LOVED Pop. The rooms were plenty big even with the stroller and things. Yes, we were taking buses and the monorail for the Magic Kingdom was nice, but if you aren't on the monorail, the wait for the buses at the Poly were painful. THey took FOREVER compared to the buses at Pop, whether we were going to another park, or downtown disney. The walk to our (non-preferred) room at Pop was pretty short, and we liked the large food court at the resort better than the quick dining options especially with kids. Our older one would swim while the youngest was taking a nap and I didn't notice her liking the value pools any less than she liked the deluxe. She didn't notice a water slide or anything missing. If we were talking about a $100 a night difference between rooms, yeah, staying at the Poly might be nice, but I just can't justifty the cost anymore. I just priced out a value season rate between Poly and Pop, and it was a difference of $376 A NIGHT!!! To me, that's crazy. The Poly is not THAT much better. If people can afford it, more power to them, but for us there is a lot of nice dinners, princess dresses, even staying a couple extra nights that you could buy for that money. Well, actually for us, it's more that the price difference between the Poly and Pop for 6 nights is $2256, which is enough for my Hubby and I to go to a 5 star resort in Mexico for 5 nights- All Inclusive. I'd just rather travel more often, I guess.

I think you will be happy with whatever you choose, just don't feel you have to be at the deluxe to have a good vacation.

I would go with a moderate--or even a value. A 5 year old will love the bright icons and theming at a value.

I have done a couple of split stays and while there was *nothing* wrong with them, I felt like I wasted time packing and unpacking and standing in line at check in, etc. There were no issues with Disney moving my luggage for me either time (I did not have a car.)

How well does your child transition...? IMO, if this is your child's first trip, it would be preferable to stay in one place and not worry about moving around.

We are taking our kids for the first time next summer and plan to stay at CSR. CBR is also a great choice because of the pool, splash pad, and colorful theme.

Also consider that the values have double beds while the moderates are queens. I'd personally go 6 days at a moderate instead of a 3/3 split stay. Moving my kids and their stuff and wasting a morning moving would not be worth it to me on that short of a trip. Now if I was doing a 10 day trip with say 6 days once place and then 4 the other I'd consider it, especially if the end of the trip was at a deluxe and we were doing more time at the resort relaxing.

For that number of days, I would say the moderate would be better; I would do a split stay if I could allocate a extra day for the transition, in order to not have to do it in a hurry, and enjoy the extra time on the resort.

I'd go with the moderate. To me, I wouldn't want to be bothered with having to pack up everything and move to another resort only after 3 days. I'd honestly only do a split stay if I was staying for a ridiculous amount of time-- at least two weeks.

As a bonus, Disney has some wonderful moderate resorts. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time at either of them :)

longer transportation times (Thus adding time to mid-day breaks) I expect to by far spend the most time at MK compared to any other park.

In this case I would do the split stay and when staying at the value go to Hollywood studios and animal kingdom since you would have to take a bus there from the Polynesian anyway and then when at the Polynesian go to Epcot and magic kingdom where you can take the monorail for an afternoon break. Transportation options is by far my favorite about a deluxe.

Actually planning on next September, but I assume there will be some version of it next year as well. That is a nice carrot, however the same would go for the first half of the split stay and you can even bleed that over to the first day of your next resort.
