splash mountain: lap bars now installed

Splash needed this. Desperately. Way too many intrusions daily.
Not to mention the day that security swarmed the store looking for the photo of a boat where people got into a fight and someone tried throwing someone else out of the boat.

Yeah that makes sense inconvenience millions of riders because of 6 at the most people, not to mention the millions that have ridden before without incident.
Yep that is a logical way of thinking :confused3

Punishing the many because of the misdeeds of the few is not a wholly new proposition.

"the logs are now cycling the track with lap bars in place, along with water dummies"

Kinda says it all. ;)

as long as there are no consequences ( such as throwing you out of the park!) for dangerous behaviour, it will continue.

It sure does. And the dumbing down of the United States continues. (and the ever growing glut of Lawyers)

So, SM with bars was supposed to open today.

Did it open?

Anyone around that can report on the effect the bars have on ride experience? (load/unload times, enjoyment of ride, comfort, etc)

I'm more bummed about no more 3 in a row (why?- we can do it on BMTR, can't we) then the lap bar. People need a "reminder" to follow directions!!!

It's easy to call people stupid or idiots but what happens in some cases is people panic and are not thinking clearly. They see an exit sign and figure they'll get out of there.

Meh I don't see the big deal. It's a bar. big woop. One lap bar isn't going to ruin my Disney trip.

people are always resistant to change :)

There is something called personal responsibility (so forgot in this day and age) If you think you will panic on a simple, mild amusement ride then YOU shouldn't ride it. Plain and simple. And given the fact that there have been millions of rides with out this becoming an ongoing problem it is just over kill and lawyer proofing a safe ride. Adding to the loading time for no good reason.

Agreed. The bars don't upset me THAT much but part of the fun was the lack of them...I always liked when rides lacked bars it seemed a little more old school to me. A touch more nostalgic.
I mean you would think people (not children whose parents should be watching them anyway) would have the sense to stay in their seats.

That would be nice in a perfect world but it doesn't happen that way. The fact that 1 person was killed on this ride is one too many and others have tried to get off is enough that something needs to be done. They have to manage to a worst case scenerio, not to a perfect world. Especially with children involved.

Unfortunately, the natural extension of this logic is to simply close (or not build) anything that might be "dangerous," such as any theme park attraction.
And, yes, there's nothing "necessary" about riding a Splash Mountain attraction.
If guests decide to kill themselves by leaping about, why not shut down the ride?

The fact is that there are "rides" that are already much, much, much, more dangerous, however.
The family car (even with its seat belts, shoulder restraints and myriad airbags) comes immediately to mind.
The safety record at Disney vastly surpasses anything related to everyday motor vehicle hazards.
