Splash down for 6 months.

Is this still a rumor/fact? Because I've been checking the lists of refurbs through August and into September, but I've seen nothing about Splash being down. Could be Disney hasn't posted that far ahead :scratchin

Disney's calendars have yet to be updated.

Ya know, I really wonder if they're not planning on not necessarily re-theming this, but maybe new story line? How many of you actually saw the movie this ride was modeled after? I know my son hasn't and I only saw it because I got my hands on a DVD from overseas. I like the ride, I like the large amount of animatronics, and I like the concept, but I honestly do not like the voices of the characters B'rer Bear and B'rer Fox. I never have. I think they're horribly stereotypical of a long gone era and not relevant to the audience now. It could use a new script.

Certain things are not bound by a timeline.

And I assure you there are plenty of folks who don't associate the ride with the movie or associate it with a sterotype of a long gone era.

Opinions obviously can differ.

Agreed. There may be some who don't know the ride's origins, but it still seems pretty irrelevant. I wonder how many people go home and research it.

I can't imagine they are going to mess with it. It's one of the most popular rides in the park, whether people know the story or not. But as a discussion a few weeks back went, it constantly amazes me that the gold standard for IP in a ride can be found in an attraction based on a movie that Disney will probably never release again. I think Splash is simply the absolute best Disney IP based ride in all of WDW. The animatronics, sound, storyline, and ride timing are all spot on perfect. And yet, if you don't own a VHS player, you are unlikely to see this movie in the U.S. ever again.

I would argue that the origin of the ride is irrelevant to the ride itself.

If one were to research the ride and see the origin is based on a movie I doubt it would create a life-altering "omg now I don't like the ride..you must change it Disney" moment. Sure some might think that of course.

I agree, it's a well done ride and I do like it, but the voice of B'rer Fox and his language I find to be insulting. It's just my opinion and my wish that it would be redone. They can use the same story line, but does he have to talk like that? That's all. Again, it's my opinion, my wish, not pushing it on anyone else.

I like the ride, I really do. I guess I'm more sensitive to the issue than I realize. I already stated in the post above, I think if they redid his voice and language it would be acceptable. I like the ride regardless of the origin, however. It's well done, no argument there.

I don't disagree. But Br'er Bear and Br'er Fox aren't the biggest problems with the movie. If you think they are insulting, imagine how people would feel listening to the Crows, which thankfully Disney left out of Splash. A product of a different time and moral viewpoint for sure and it is fascinating that a movie with all these, now unacceptable, stereotypes is the basis for such a darn good ride. I wouldn't complain if they changed it and I'll be interested to see how they handle the Crows in the Live Action Dumbo, assuming it gets made.

Please don't think that I was thinking you were trying to push your opinion on anyone else. I wasn't thinking that at all.

It's totally fine to be more sensitive to the issue. It's just the movie came out in 1946 and as already been stated it's not really something easily viewable in the U.S. The ride opened in DLR in 1989, DLTokyo in 1992 and WDW in 1992. If the ride and the movie came out a lot closer together and you could still get it very easily in the U.S. then you might see more people associate the ride with the movie. You also have people who will like the ride and know the backstory but just like the ride more than they dislike the origin of the ride.

It's a very well-loved ride and the discussion I do think would be completely different if we were speaking about a ride that was moreso on the bottom of people's interests/likes of rides as it would be easier to tweak without getting a large PR uproar.

I believe I fall into that category. I do like it. There's just part of it that grates my nerves.

Not 6 months but this rumor has popped back up with more validity for these dates, August 28th- November 16th.

We arrive August 23.... fingers crossed it's open until August 28. I'm dying to take our daughter on splash for her first ride. Last trip she was finally tall enough, but I was pregnant. I'll be crushed if they close it early and we miss it yet again. Splash is my favorite.

I know I'm taking this thread off the rails a bit, and I must admit, this is coming from a white, southern woman...but I see the B'rer Rabbit stories from a more positive point of view. These stories were brought over from Africa - part of their folklore - and they were passed down through the generations. They represent using wits over brawn and being able to overcome a situation that may look dire.

I don't find the language and voices any different than, say, Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer dialect in a Mark Twain story, or Bert's British cockney in Mary Poppins. That kind of dialect is part of our history, particularly Southern history; it is what it is. If anything, it can open the door to discussions about history and even about the importance of education.
