It states small backpack ... I will eventually measure ours but just trying to get some general advice. Does a typically standard backpack make the cut if its not over stuffed ?

Yes, that's fine. You just have to be able to store it under the seat in front of you.

A standard size backpack is fine. A giant one with a metal frame that backpackers use is not.
