We went to the Polynesian Resort on Thursday evening for the 5:30 pm Luau show. I made the reservations 5 months ago, but we were worried after reading such bad reviews here. Well, we had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone.

As with any dinner show, they take your picture when you get there and try to sell it to you later. We declined.

When you arrive, you get a lei and your picture taken, and then you head down the path to the garden waiting area. When it is time to be seated, they have servers guide everyone to their table. It was a very quick process.

We had a front-row seat, and were very close to the stage. I was very worried about the heat, but it was quiet pleasant.

On our table was a pitcher of ice water, a plate with a delicious salad with Mango Poppy seed dressing, a loaf of Cuban bread, and a fresh pineapple that had been cut up. We devoured the tray and asked for more! By that time, they took our drink orders and began to bring out our food. The ribs were good, but the chicken was fabulous! The rice and veggies were also good, and we had a second plate of the ribs and the rice. The dessert was delicious, but hard to explain the "chocolate volcano." Kind of like a mousse/ pudding on a cake base.

The drinks were plentiful, and my wife and I chose beer. I never had an empty glass the entire evening, and felt that I got my money's worth.

The show was fun, and the dancers were incredibly talented. The costumes were beautiful! The theme of the show is that "Auntie" is going to provide an authentic Luau for her niece who is going away to college on the mainland. The niece's friends (the dancers) help to put on the show. There is also a nephew who helps to MC and provide some comic relief.

The dancing isn't all Hawaiian. Instead, they do native dances from several South Pacific countries. The costumes are beautiful, and each dance is well performed. We were extremely impressed. As everyone points out, the end of the show with the fire twirler is the best part. Not only was he very talented, but he interacted really well with the crowd. He received a standing ovation.

The dinner show was very expensive. It was $28 per person (regardless of age), and they added a $60 gratuity to our bill. So, the total was $238.96 for the four of us. We paid in advance 5 months ago, so it wasn't a surprise. The only surprise was to see it how much the gratuity was when the bill was broken down. I can only assume that it was split with the performers.

In summary, we really enjoyed the food and the performance. Ultimately, we felt it was worth the money. It was our only "big" meal, and we did the Luau instead of a character meal on this trip. We would recommend the show and dinner to anyone who asked, and we would certainly go see it again.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. We've done the HDDR for several years in a row now, so I think next time we'll try Spirit of Aloha instead. Sounds like a very enjoyable evening.

Thanks for the review. We are going there in Oct. I thought gratuity was included in the price of the tickets. Did this change? Just want to know if I should be bringing some cash with me that night~

Thanks

Yes, the gratuity was part of the overall cost that we pre-paid when we made the reservations. However, when we received our tickets at the show, it broke-down what the actual costs were. We knew we paid $238, but didn't realize that $60 of that was gratuity.

You don't need to take any extra cash with you to the show.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! We went to the luau in May, and I was very hesitant to do so based on reviews I'd read. I even prepared DBF to possibly be disappointed. But like you, we thought it was great! The food was really fantastic :)

I agree that the luau is a lot of fun - we did it last summer and had a great time. But I wanted to mention something about the price.

According to the current prices on the Disney website, the luau is:

Cat 1 - $63.99/adult, $32.99/child
Cat 2 - $58.99 / $28.99 (if you were in the front but on the side near the stage, I think that is a Cat 2 seat)
Cat 3 - $54.99 / $27.99
Tax & gratuity included in those numbers.

I wouldn't want any one to think they can go to the luau for $28 per person (when I first read your comment, my eyes bugged out!), even though you did mention the gratuity being added - I know you're just saying that's how the receipt was written out. And it's not a price regardless of age - there is an adult price and a child's price.

$60 tip on $238 seems more than 18%, or am I reading wrong?

There were 4 of them. I think the typo was instead of 58, the OP wrote 28.

58.99 x 4 = $235.96. Gratuity was included, which the OP said was $60 of the $235.96. So.....the meal / show was $175.96 (ish) for 4 = $43.99 pp before gratuity...so the tip was about 34% ???? :confused3

Like the OP said..doesnt matter how its broken down, you pay 1 price ahead of time...no surprises or forced large gratuities.

Maybe the waitstaff shares tip money with the dancers...thus the high gratuity? Do they only give wine and beer for adult drinks? We went to the Luau about 25 years ago on our honeymoon and I could have sworn that they served tropical drinks back then.

Thank you for the wonderful review. I also booked this, as a surprise for DBF, despite the bad reviews. Not that we listen to reviews too much anyway but, I did do a little investigating since it's not cheap! But, I did think the price was reasonable for what it is. Dinner and a show. Can't wait to try it next month!

Thanks again!

Was it really not too hot outside? I always figured it would be to uncomfortably hot out in August(which is when we go) to sit outside. Were you just lucky with the weather?

Thanks for the great review! I was also a little hesitant but booked it anyway for Sept! I believe in trying meals for ourselves because different people like different things....hope our experience is as good as your was. :cool1:

Definitely nice to hear a positive review of this show. We're staying at the Poly for our first trip to Disney in November and my wife wanted us to go to this. I've not mentioned any of the reviews I've read here that have generally been down on the show so as not to color her perception going in. This now helps to color my on view going in for the better :)

Your first trip! How awesome! You could do a lot worse!

I have never been to the luau but DH likes it - it's just not something we've made a priority to do together on these trips. Plus we do a lot of 2-credit dining as it is so that would just be another breakfast we'd have to eat in the lounge to make up the extra credit...and I need my Tonga Toast!!! :rotfl:

It's nice to see a good review of the luau. I'm glad the OP enjoyed it! :)

I'm so glad you had a great time at the Luau. We go every year! Isn't the bread SO good?!

We went to the Luau in May (again) and we had an awesome time. We were four adults and two rug rats. The kids were even given an option of mac and cheese and hot dogs in a bun. We did get that as we werent sure if they would like the meal ...BUT they ate the hotdogs and a little mac and cheese and they loved the ribs and chicken....
To me the food especially the chicken, was wonderful....We too had the beer option ...
The talent from these dancers is unbelievable. As we were told in the past luau's.....they all study in Hawaii and learn all the dances from all the islands......very talented group....
We think that even though we had tier one and had a great front seat.....and over 300 dollars.....it was a great evening for our grandkids to see this....

Does anyone know if the TiW card is accepted at the Luau?? If so, how do they apply the 20% credit since you pay in advance??

do the ribs AND chicken have BBQ sauce on them? DH does NOT like BBQ sauce. The only reviews /menus we've read said there was pork or ham on the menu. Are they just outdated menus?

I shouldn't have read this, now I want to go too.

My DD15 who is turning 16 right before our trip asked if she could have this for her b-day present. I wish I could afford to give it to her. BUT, it gives us something to save for in the future, it sounds great!

Now if it was just $28 a person...
