My kids are still kids, so this is what they *want* to do, and based on their personalities, this is what I think they will do:

DS16: wants to coach college football or be a physical therapist. He probably will do one of them - he is pretty focused on getting what he wants. He loves the process of learning - especially in math and science, so working his way up in the coaching world or going to school for a long time wouldn't phase him. He wanted to be a meteorologist (the one that gives the TV guy on the news the info, not the TV weatherman himself lol) for years when he was younger, but doesn't have an interest in pursuing it now.

DD12: wants to be a surgeon or work as a set designer or costume/hair/makeup design for TV/movies/print ads. I think she will probably end up in an artistic/creative field - she is been artistically driven since the first time she drew on her bedroom wall as a toddler lol. She loves working behind the scenes in local/school plays. I do not see her in the medical field at all. I think she would hate it.

DS10 1/2: has no idea what he wants to be. He's the kid who shrugs his shoulders and says "ehh, I have no clue" when you ask lol . I think he will be an electrician or mechanical engineer or something where he works with his hands - he hates sitting in school and has always been super interested in how things work. He used to take apart all of his toys and loves when DH invites him to get under the car hood! Because he hates school, I can see him opting for trade school certification instead of a 4 year degree.

Mine are still in school too.

DD18: Plans to major in Graphic Design next year, I hope she gets a job in it when she's done. She's very artistic, but doesn't want to try to make a living as an artist, per se. Graphic Design is her more practical compromise. She's feeling nervous about locking into a major, but we've read through the lists of majors and the only other thing that appeals is multimedia journalism, and she may be able to work in that anyway with all of the software she'll learn for GD.

DD15: Very set on theater or musical theater. Wants to star in the movies, of course. Problem with that is we live in Iowa, so any major acting career will mean a big move. But she doesn't like cities or being far from home...and she's kind of wimpy on new driving experiences or ordering her own food at a restaurant so she would really have to get some backbone to move to LA or NYC! She had kind of backed off on the acting career after traveling to New Orleans with choir and not liking the city and being away. Then she got the lead in the musical so she's great guns on it again. Hoping she can end up with a job that pays and some acting locally on the side or something.

My daughter wanted to be a doctor for most of her childhood (with short detours into "marine biologist" and "elementary school teacher"). When she was six, her favourite book was "The Canadian Medical Association: Children's Symptoms" which she'd use to diagnose her dolls with things like diphtheria, pinworms and syphilis. Weird kid.

Anyway, she's 20 now and is in her third year of her undergrad, studying Health Sciences. She landed an internship in the biolab her first summer, and fell in love with the place, continuing to work there ever since. So now she's got her eye set on having a "lab of my very own!" where she can work with proteins and dna and such (as she's currently doing). In other words, she's on track to become a biochemist of some description, after she earns her masters and doctorate. No one who knew her when she was small is at all surprised.

My son was keen to become a chef when he was nine, but by the time he was 11 he'd already decided that professional kitchens were way too stressful and he'd rather just cook for fun. Beyond that, he's always been a mystery. Not the kind of kid to tell you what's on his mind, or what his goals are. I know he's dabbled in filmmaking and musical composition. However, he's currently doing an undergrad degree in Economics. I have no idea why, but he seems happy. So who knows what he'll do with his life? Whatever it is, I'm sure he'll be successful at it, as he's a very charming, personable young man.

We live in the Chicago suburbs, so opportunities are a little better here as far as proximity. One of DD's best friends does acting/modeling and has an agent and quite a nice little resume already at age 12 (she has done print and in-store graphics for American Girl, Kmart, Kohl's, etc and commercials for Walmart and Foot Locker among others, plus multiple theater roles), and DD and her always joke that BFF will be the star on stage and DD will be the one behind the scenes making sure she is ready to go on. lol DD has no interest in being on-stage, but loves the artistic side of behind the scenes.

She might end up in medical science, though. There's a lot of creativity involved in research, and it's very much the definition of "working behind the scenes". :)

My kids are still tiny, so it's such a mystery!
DD, age 4, says she wants to be "a doctor and a mommy" and given her smarts and personality, I have no doubt at all that she'll do that.

DS, age 7, says he wants to stay home and play video games all day when he grows up. So... yeah. Gonna have to work on that one a little more :rotfl2:

.

My sister is a set designer! It's obviously not the consistent money maker than being a surgeon is, but she loves it and is absolutely making a living.

That's true! You never know where they will end up in the end!

My granddaughter, now 11, when she was younger, always said she wanted to be a saloner or a burier. Now she wants to be an actress.
Her 5 y/o sister wants to be king of the world. She just might make it.
The 8 y/o says she's way to young to know because she's just a kid.

Older son (16) has said he wants to go into Engineering. Originally mechanical, but now he's thinking computer engineering.

Younger son (11) - no clue. Probably plans on being a forward for FC Barcelona (but that's unlikely :p )

DS wanted to be a Major League Baseball player, but studied Sports Medicine in college before shifting gears to Computer IT.

DD wanted to work for Non-Profit causes, did that for 9 months in a temporary job and hated it. Her degree is in Government, but she is currently working as a TV Production Assistant and has learned to Direct.

DS16 says sports broadcaster but he is so shy. I have no idea how this is going to work.

DD10 says RN or teacher. I can see her doing either. She has also wanted to be a writer. I can see that too.

DS (27) wanted to fly helicopters, then he wanted to be a Physical Therapist or an EMT if he couldn't get into PT school - He got into grad school and is a Physical Therapist (DPT), he loves it.
DD (18) High school senior. This is my all over the map child. She really wants to be a baker but has realized she will starve. She wants to be a liberal arts kid but admits she is a STEM kid. She is currently applying for colleges and the first few submitted were AstroPhysics as a major, now she is thinking Political Science as she has decided she IS going to be President in 2044. OK.........

My 10 year old DS wants to be an engineer.

My 4 year old DS changes between police officer and engineer. (I think he is much more the engineer type. He can be very precise/detail oriented and he has really good visual-spatial skills) He is also going to have 18 children and build a house next to mine.

My 4 year old DD wants to be a princess. (And we have tried to get her to think about other things, but she won't budge)

That's okay, just tell her that princesses are queens-in-training. And by the way, that means you are the current reigning monarch. All hail, Queen Mom!

Every princess must study a wide range of subjects. She needs to be very good in the three R's, of course, but she'll also need to study history, geography, public speaking, government, economics, world religions and world affairs.

She should work especially hard on her tact and diplomacy. She will need to be able to instantly put people at their ease, and make small talk about whatever their particular interests and concerns are. She'll want to practice remembering people's names and faces, even if she's only been introduced to them once. She'll need to have impeccable manners and gorgeous handwriting. She can't be sloppy in any aspect of her public life (and when you're royalty, all of your life is public).

She needs to be skilled in a variety of sports. She should be able to talk knowledgeably about whatever sport her country is particularly obessed with, whether it's football, soccer or horse racing.

She will have to be involved in several charities and spend a good portion of her time volunteering.

A princess is never demanding, spoiled or entitled. A princess will someday serve and protect her people as queen. She will always put their needs before her own wishes. Being a princess is hard work!

DD14 wants to be a basketball player(more than likely not going to happen- she plays ok, BUT she's 5'4, and don't think she'll be much taller), or a geologist or some kind of scientist. We'll see.

My DS is a computer engineer and works for Gamin on the aircraft GPS.

My DD is a 4th grade math teacher and really doesn't like it, but can't find anything else.

My DDIL is an attorney

But what did they want to be when they were little? :)

DD14 wants to be a special effects makeup artists for movies. She spends much of her free time creating "effects" at home.

DD9 wants to own a farm and horses. She's totally made for that. Not sure how she would make a living though.
