Spin Off of Slo's Poll; Were you in any HS musicals?

Love this post so much! I was a theatre kid in high school and majored in it for awhile in college. We did Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls, and Godspell when I was in high school. Such fun memories!

No, I was a shy and quiet kid, not theatrical in the least, and it would’ve been way out of my comfort zone to perform on stage. The only play I was ever in was in elementary school, when it was mandatory for all 6th graders to participate in an annual production directed by the music teacher. I was in the background and had no lines.

I went to an all-girls high school with many more talented people than me. I did behind the scenes lighting for Carousel, and spotlight for the King and I (we imported males for a few lead roles as needed).

I went to a performing arts high school so was lucky to be in quite a few things. My two favorites were Into the Woods and the Secret Garden.
My middle daughter has an amazing voice and was just the Baker’s wife in her high school’s fall musical. There was some drama with the drama kids because the senior girls were not happy that she got the lead as a junior. She was in Mama Mia and Drowsey Chaperone too. In middle school she was Mary Poppins.

I was in drama too in high school but did plays not musicals. I was in a traveling one that went to middle schools that had scenes to inform about AIDS as a PSA.

I was in Sound of Music in middle school. There is zero question why I was picked to be Gretl. Was it my fantastic stage presence and singing ability? HELL NO!
I was chosen because I was the shortest girl that tried out to be an extra. 😲

I moved to Arizona after that year and my theater aspirations left with the move. I had a higher calling ... to be at the top of the pyramid and went into the world of cheerleading. ;) :cheer2:

I was on the stage crew all four years of high school. I got to be an extra in crowd scenes in Oklahoma! and Hello Dolly. We also produced West Side Story, Godspell, Fiddler on the Roof, and a few dramas.

No, nothing like that was happening at my school.
Did your community value talents like singing, or playing instruments? Did the kids ever put on concerts or shows or plays? Just curious. As a kid we'd put on shows for each other or adults, but that might have been more because we watched TV and movies?

We sang and some learned guitar and piano, but any attempt to stand out and show your talent would be viewed as being prideful and would be considered a negative. We all enjoyed singing and playing, but it was very much a group effort and not something anyone did to 'perform'.

That makes sense. :)

not WITH the high school but yeah-LOTS outside. my high school was odd in the respect that the drama department and music department NEVER worked together on anything. the one musical per year was strictly the choral teacher's baby and he (like with his choirs) had his little minions that were going to be cast and to some extent the individual musical hand chosen for (based on their vocal range/appearance)-he held all the power/6 choir classes per day and all but one he hand picked the participants so they were learning the audition pieces upwards of a year before the production was announced:sad2:. if you were not one of his chosen you were not cast. the drama teacher was rumored to have had a falling out years prior with the local community theatre group and held a grudge so if a student dared to be in one of their productions they were never cast in a school production. a handful of us found productions outside school to do and never looked back. they were allot of fun and you got to work with a variety of people of different ages/different capabilities-a great learning environment.

I loved being in the musicals. I was in Into the Woods (Little Red Riding Hood), The Sound of Music (Elsa Schraeder, the Baroness) and Me and My Girl (Sally Smith.) I went on to major in Musical Theatre and later performed with a touring children’s theatre company.
Once I was married and had children, I continued staying connected to the theatre by choreographing and directing musicals for a couple of school districts in the area. ☺️
