Spin Off: interesting baby names

I guess my son's name would have made the list--it's Torin. I heard it, liked it and he just seemed like a Torin when he was born. I did give him the middle name Scott in case he didn't like having a unique name. He's almost 16 and loves his name though.

I'm a teacher and have seen some interesting ones. Last year we had a Storm, who had a sister named Autumn and a brother named Rain. We also had a Lennox(boy), and Christani(girl). Another class had a Kudus(pronounced kuh-doos). None of these are particularly bad, but they are unique. The little boy I babysit for also has a unique name I like, Orion.

I'll have to check back after I get my list for this school year, LOL. We always have a few that we have to ask how to pronounce.;)

We know 3 Torins! All are in the 8-12 age range though. Two from the Northeast and one from Colorado. Maybe the name is gaining in popularity.

I have a cousin who named two of her three daughters Piper and Reese, both cute names to me.

My great grandfather was named Josiah and that is one I had on my short list if I had another boy. I don't know; I just don't like "normal" names, LOL
I just counted and can think of 11 Pipers that we know--all under age 12. I would not think to consider it unusual. Reese always makes me think of Reese Witherspoon:upsidedow

A friend told me of the family she grew up with...children respectively...Fire, Phoenix and Falcon.

With my kids I wanted something that would not sound strange when they were elderly but not so old that they were super different now.

So we have a Katelyn Rose (we tried so hard with this name to come up with a unique spelling and now there are tons spelled just like this.) Her father wanted it to be Paige Katherine...which I hated. And I wanted to combine her great grammas names to get Katelyn Charlie (Grammas are Charlotte and Millie)

With my son the only thing we ever agreed upon was Alexander Dale. Dale for his grampa who passed a few years before. What I think is funny now is that we have always called him Alex but yet if you were to ask this precocious little man what his name is...Alexander! (however it does come out sounding like Adamsandler) LOL

Love threads like this :)

Funny how people prounounce things so differently. If I saw the name Aislinn i would pronounce it "Ash-lyn". Had a girl at my high school named Aisling, and it was pronounced Ash-lyn.

I would pronounce it A's Lynn... ? :confused3

Anyways...My oldest has a name I've never heard another person have (aside from where we took the name)... It's Rayden. A friend of a friend said she knew a boy named Raiden (sp) but my Rayden is a girl :)
Then...I had Kayleigh, almost named Ashlyn (both turned out very popular in the 10yr old range)

My son is Sage...different and most think it for boy OR girl
and..my daughter Ella (which turned out to be the 7th most popular name in Ga in 2009).. but...her real name is Ellasen... we just call her Ella :)

But..aside from all that....I have all names beat from one I heard...from a mom, who evidently was clueless at the doctors office...
Named her daughter... Flahmydia...
yeah :sad2:

Our baby boy was just born 2 weeks ago and I'm already worried that the poor kid will be spelling/pronouncing his name his entire life. His name is Callum, which is an extremely common (Scottish) name in the UK. DH and I taught in England for a few years and we both had lots of Callums in our classes. We liked the name and, though we knew it was uncommon here, we didn't think it was overly difficult. Turns out we were wrong. We've gotten so many crazy looks when we tell people his name, and it even took two seperate conversations (where the name was spelled out using 'C as in Charlie'...) for his own Grandma (my mom) to get it right. :lmao:

Poor kid. Guess we'll just have to take him to Scotland one day... :rotfl:

 Adam Sandler. How cute!

I like Katelyn much better than Paige, so I'm glad you won and not your husband. ;) But, I do love the name Millie, when it's a nickname for something more formal and Charlotte is nice, too.

I used to teach a little boy named Raiden. He was born in the US, but his family was middle eastern. Not sure if it's a traditional name there.

I like Sage better for a boy. I think it sounds masculine.

Oh, and the Aislinn/Aishling thing is because it's an Irish name and S is pronounced as "sh" (think Sean).

Maybe we started the trend, LOL. My Torin will be 16 tomorrow. A doctor my ex worked with was named Torin(he would be mid-50's now) and we liked the name. There was also a UNC football player named Torin Dorin awhile back, and the only other Torin we have met IRL was named after him. That Torin is 12. I have had people tell me it was weird, a few of them right here on the Dis. I don't see anything weird about it; it's easy to spell and pronounce. He can't find pencils or mugs with his name on it, but that doesn't seem to have scarred him too much.;)

When I see Lida I think of The Music Man and barbershop quartets:

"Lida Rose, I'm home again, Rose."

My name is really common (Emily), but I like it. I've come to like more uncommon (and old-fashioned) names. Right now I really like the names Eleanor and Graham.

As in Rigby? :thumbsup2 I wanted one of my girls to be named Julia, after the song. But DH worked with a Julia he could not stand.

We got our daughters name *Rayden* from the game/movie Raiden of "Mortal Kombat"... It's actually a Japanese name if I'm not mistaken...
Brayden is such a common name that alot of times when we here that name be called we think they are saying Rayden...lol
