Inspired by Barb's drinks thread...how many carbs are in your average red or white wine? I haven't been drinking while on Atkins, but I have several parties coming up and would like to have a drink or two. How much damage will I cause?

When you drink wine - remember the dryer, the better. A glass of dry red wine has 1/2 carb.

The problem is - your body burns alcohol before it burns sugar and fat. So, if you have a couple glasses of wine, your body will be busy for the next day or so burning the alcohol, so you probably won't notice a drop in your weight. It won't make you gain, it will just stop the losing. No big deal. :)

Thanks Rhonda! I had no idea wine had so few carbs. I can deal with a few days of stall every once in a while if it means I can have a glass or two. :)

I agree Jen...I really like to drink wine every now and then, so I can deal with the fact of stalling for a day or two...I have had much longer stall periods then that anyway! LOL

Thanks for asking this question, I wanted to know as well! :)

Carbs aren't nearly that low, even in dry wines... Remember serving sizes, too. Many people have a larger serving than 3.5 oz. (standard wine glasses are close to 10 oz. - if you fill that up you've almost tripled your serving).

Here are some averages:

Wine, red (3.5 fl oz) - 1.75g
Wine, rose (3.5 fl oz) - 1.5g
Wine, white (3.5 fl oz) - 1g
Wine, dessert, sweet (3.5 fl oz) - 14.1g
Wine, dessert, dry (3.5 fl oz) - 12g
Wine, table, all (3.5 fl oz) - 3.2g
Wine, cooking (3.5 fl oz) - 6.4g

Cider, dry (1 pint) - 15g
Gin, Rum (unflavored), Vodka, Whisky (1 fl oz) - 0g
Sherry (2 fl oz) - 3g
Port (2 fl oz) - 6g
Guinness (1/2 pint) - 4g

Now for a public service announcement... Also remember that, although the carbs might be low, or even nothing, alcohol will slow or stop your weight loss until it's out of your system. You'll also want to remember that when you're low-carbing, you'll probably feel the alcohol much sooner than you would otherwise. Alcohol can also induce cravings, or alter your judgement... making those chips, etc. look MIGHTY good! ;)

It can be very surprising!

I found out that my favorite ASTI has 25 carbs in a 5 oz. glass. How devastating that was.

Oh well, back to Diet Rite.
