Sparks will fly for the Super Goofs in July

Hey everybody!

I'm back home after my week away at my Mom's and in Camden, Maine. Weather was cool and rainy most of the time. We did some hiking in Camden Hills State Park, which was nice, albeit mucky. And the beautiful views of Penobscot Bay were entirely shrouded in fog and mist. Oddly enough, it didn't bother me at all that I couldn't see anything.

Anyway, took the rest of the week off and have many chores to do. One of which--I will do tomorrow since it will be exactly six months away--is to sign up for the Disney marathon. I have finally committed to do it. My plan for the remainder of the summer is to train for the RFTT 10 k (building back up a base to run 3x/week), and then the marathon plan which I have picked uses your most recent 10 k time to base your training on.

Of course, in true vacation form, I have done nothing over the last two weeks, other than 2 days of hiking. And I know that watching the TDF doesn't count!

Shan Sorry to hear about your injury...hope you heal soon and don't get too discouraged.

Everyone else...will catch up later and keep up the good training.

Maura

Shan!

Bummer about the shin. Glad you had it checked out though. As for training, why not look into a few 5K and 10k runs to keep yourself motivated. You wanted to work on speed anyway so just start slow, keep the mileage low and work on getting a solid base before you start adding miles.

The fall is littered with tons of little 5K and 10K races that would provide plenty of motivation without forcing a training plan that is going to risk another injury.

Add work out time with some cross training until you are ready to tackle another half.

Hang in there.

question, lately, after a run, I am craving salt like you wouldn't believe! I am trying very very hard to stay away from chips...any suggestions on a salty snack that has at least a little nutritional value?

thanks!

Angie - I eat baked potatoes when I am craving salt. I add some cheddar cheese and some fat free sour cream and more salt than typical. If my kids ar home, I make myself potato skins and let them eat the inner part of the potato. (I bake them, so they are mostly healthy)

Another salt craving helper is V8 juice. It doesn't cure the crunchy craving but it definately helps the salt. I usually eat cucumber or celery slices with it so that I feel like I am crunching something. Or if you are just snacking, put some salt on cucmber slices or tomato slices.

If it's lunch time, try a can of soup to help with the salt issue. Most of them are loaded with salt. Again, it doesn't cure the munchy part but add a few carrot sticks and it will usually cure the craving.

If you need something to store in a drawer at work try salted peanuts or beef jerky. DH measures out peanuts in snack bags so that he doesn't eat too many at a time and beef jerky comes in small serving packages.

hope this helps.

Good Morning Everyone!
I just read that I got the okay to come back (yeah!)
I will be MIA for two weeks- off to the Cape! Hopefully the weather will turn around a little.
I'll post and update when I return.

Shan- sorry about your injury. I still have mine after a YEAR and I cannot do any long distance. I still signed up for the MCM- if I have to walk part of it so be it. My medal will still say 'finisher' on it. I say - sign up for the race. I find it gives me that extra motivation to get out the door. Extra points if you run for a charity!

Lisa- sorry about the new hours at work. I am in fear every day that I am going to get laid off. I really like were I am and I am truelly blessed to have an amazing bunch of smart and supportive group to work with. Not always crazy about the patients:) DH has me extra worried as well. Not a good time for him to be working for the DOD.

In addition- I have signed up to run the Boston Half Marathon in October. Since I will never BQ it is the next best thing! I am running for the Dana-Faber if anyone has extra $ to spare. Unfortunately it is two weeks before MCM but I'll count it as a training run!

Have fun everyone and I'll return in two weeks!

Joanne

Roasted salted almonds. I also measure mine into 1 oz. snack bags.

rough one.

35 minute open water swim

4.5 hour hilly bike ride

50 minute run.

Time for a medicinal tumbler of Scotch with an ice bath to get the legs ready for tomorrow...an 1:20 run, 1:00 bike, :40 run.

:faint:

???? Where is everyone????

Mike how was it today?

As for me, I ran the relay for my BIL at the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon. I forgot to turn off my garmin but I think I finished in 57:21 or there abouts. It was a tough course and it was raining so I was pleased with my effort.

I did realize that I should have trained for racing a 10k. I was unsure of how hard I could push myself and not bonk before the end. So I am running hard but feeling very strong and feeling like I could maintain that pace for quite a while but I don't KNOW if I can push harder and its a race so I want to push. That should keep my 6 mile runs more interesting (and faster) for a while!

Ok Goofs - REPORT!

Tonight was a proof of concept run. 15.05 miles around the neighborhood. Or, put another way, 30 laps around the neighborhood. Again and again and again, I went past my house. I was never more than a couple minutes from a place where I could quit, but I wanted to prove that I could endure a boredom that you won't find on a treadmill or a normal road run.

I ran my shift for my running club's Relay for Life team last night. I was scheduled to run a 1.5 hour shift but my wife took the last half hour. I ran 7 miles in that hour. It was a very humbling experience to run that track circling all the cancer survivors and candles in memory of those who lost their battle.

I'm not used to running non-stop as I usually run 4 minutes/walk 1. Whenever I felt like stopping, I kept thinking of what these people had gone through and how minute my pain actually was.

I'm glad I'm participating again as it had been a few years since I was on the team my company used to participate in.

I'm unfortunately paying for it this morning as I haven't been this sore in a long time! I passed on a 7.2-mile race I was supposed to do this morning. An interesting thing I noticed is, even though I pushed myself during those 7 miles last night, I ended up running a much slower pace than I usually do when I take my walk breaks. I'll have to remember that when I'm tempted to skip them during normal races.

We will be around this week and then we are heading to Los Angeles for a week to visit family. I'm running a 5K while down there and then the San Francisco Half-Marathon on the way home.

Hi Goofs!

I got in 4.3 miles today and 45 minutes on the bike. Tomorrow is a 40 minute run and Pilates. Tuesday I'm going to see Grease with Taylor Hicks. The last time I saw Grease, Chubby Checker was Teen Angel and a friend from High school was Sandy.

5 miles will be on tap for next weekend.

Hi Goofs! Back to work today (can't you tell? ;) ) and also to the gym. Got in some weights and a quick bike warmup. I am starting a new training plan this week, and want my XT days to focus more on upper body weight training and abs. We'll see how it goes--I think I need a new exercise set.

On the spur of the moment (and the prodding of a friend), I did the Muddy Buddy race yesterday. Was rather interesting and fun. I wrote up a report on the race thread if you're interested. How often do you get to crawl through a mud pit when you race?

Cecilia Thanks for "holding down the fort" on this thread--it is quiet, but I will do my best to pick it up!

Mike How was the scotch? and what brand--single malt or blended? Oh, and way to hang tough on your workout.

Angie Hope your loss of nail didn't hurt!

Steve Great job on the relay--and I have heard other people say the same thing about pace with a run/walk. I am afraid if I stop running I won't want to start again!

SAHDad Wow--that is a true challenge. Sounds like a good mental exercise--maybe we should incorporate brain training along with body training for our races?

Megan Great job on your workouts. Hope you enjoy the show.

Well, gotta go read the emails that have piled up while I've been gone. Not too many, actually.

Maura

I just lost a toenail (my first one!)

hugs. I know that is sad. But the good news is that they do grow back AND a good pedicurist can put a fake one on there in the mean time.

Yikes! I have done a couple similar runs when training in the mountains but at least mine was a 2 mile loop. Those are the runs when an Ipod is invaluable. Congrats for sticking to it.

:goodvibes Rest day today!!!:goodvibes

Maura - How cool that you got to run a Muddy Buddy. I would love to try one someday.

Angie - Be proud of your nail loss. That's one of the badges of honor of becoming an "real" runner. :scared: Next stop...Boston! I'm a newbie who still hasn't lost any nails (I say that like it's a bad thing).

AFM, I am officially signed up for Mickey as of today! My room at AKV is already booked and I still have annual passes so all I need now is airfare. I can't wait until Southwest posts January's flights as tickets are really expensive from where we live right now.

My "In Training for Disney 2010" shirt just arrived in the mail which I'm going to proudly wear to every race between now and then. :woohoo: I couldn't have picked a better first marathon and am really excited!

Steve Cool! Another Goof doing the Mickey! I signed up last Friday and am already nervous (based on today's less than stellar run). See...this is why I generally don't sign up for races until the last minute!

Managed ~ 3.6 miles today. Was supposed to be speed work, but wasn't feeling very speedy! Chalked it up to "race recovery" and moved on!

Steve, I was thinking the exact same thing! How funny to find myself in a group where we're actually kinda envious of someone else losing their first toenail!

Hooray for Steve and Maura signing up for the Mickey! The Goofs will be well represented! I'm having loads of self-doubt about the Mickey since I had a particularly slow, painful run last night. But the "good"(?) news is that I woke up with a cold this morning, so I can chalk up my poor performance to the fact that I was coming down with something. (Let's not mention the fact that I had bailed on most of my short runs while on vacation, OK? I'm sure that had nothing to do with the bad run.)

Hi Goofs, still here, still looking for my motivation, but am putting in the miles and time on the bike infront of the TV most nights. Just updated the spreadsheet. Also, put $$ in the bank today for Race for the Taste 10K and Tower of Terror 13K so will be officially registering for them in the next day or two.

Angie, congrats on the toenail, I hear thats a good thing!?!

Maura, I'm going to read your race report now.

Shan, sorry about your injury, hoping for a quick recovery, hugs!!

Everyone else, great job on getting your workouts done, keep it up!!

Got in an hour on the bike...it was too COLD to ride at 0400 if you can imagine that.

Also got in 8 miles in 1:18...not fast for most, but fast for me!

Today is a 45 swim and 1:30 bike, not sure how I'm going to get the bike in with the T-Storms, but there is always the trainer :scared1:

Keep up the good work goofs!

Hey everyone. Glad to see you all continuing the team love!

Angie, I have never lost a toenail. I thought I might after Hollis but nah, still didn't. Didn't lose one after CMM either. I guess that makes you an elite and me STILL a newbie!! :lmao:

Shan, :hug::wizard:

Suzanne, if you find your motivation, see if you can find mine kicking around somewhere too! :goodvibes

Mike, yeah, it's cold here too. Bites. Totally.

Everyone else,

As for me, I am back to running, just not as much as before. About 4 days a week and 3-4 miles at a run/walk pace. I am not pushing myself until I feel ready. But I am out there plugging away. Job is crazy. Kids are crazy and the weather is the craziest of all. Did I mention my mother is ditching us all for Florida? Right when school starts. Yeah, more stress on my plate.

Hang in there everyone. Summer is coming, or so they keep telling me.
