So I will be at the World next week with my grandsons and they expect me to ride Space Mountain with them, I didn't last time because I was too afraid. I did ride BTMR and SCREAMED for my mom the whole time. I am 47. lol So I'm not sure I can handle SM.

It's making me feel stressed. I don't want them to remember Grandma wouldn't ride SM. Whatever I decide to do will be in their memories of me long after I am long gone.

Do I put myself through the agony or feel like I let them down? Seems like a lose-lose to me! :confused3

THANKS!

It's not super scary. It's all in the dark so you can't see what's ahead (don't know if that's a good thing or not) and it's VERY jerky/bumpy/rough.

I'd do it- it's a really fun ride. Just do it on the condition that if you ride it, that the folks in your party buy you your drink of choice at Epcot

try looking at the you tube videos & see if it is something that you could handle - there are even a couple that have the lights on - it is really a pretty simple roller coaster (no loops or corkscrews)

I'm 51 and love Space Mountain! At least try it once. But I would not ride it if you have any back/neck problems, it is jerky.

I'm not a huge roller coaster fan, don't like big drops, but Space Mountain is really fun. It's the anticipation of what's coming up next that's a bit scary, but it really isn't that scary of a roller coaster. It is jerky and fast, but really isn't too bad. I'd do it, it's really fun!

I love Space Mountain & I've got a few years on you:rolleyes:
Then again, BTMRR is my favorite ride. SP is similar in the bumpiness & how it jerks you. It's different in that it's dark. You can always try it - you never know, you may like it.

I was just about to post pretty much the same question. BTMR for me was a little scary when my DH (back then he was my boyfriend) made me go on and yet I married him anyway! But everyone tells me if I am willing to give BTMR another go then space mountain should be fine. I do not mind the dark or bumpiness but are there drops?

Beaniesmg no matter what you decide you will not be letting down your family, they are family they will understand if you decide it is not worth it. You will create so many other great memories with your grandson that they may tease you a bit but out of love, not that you let them down.

I'm 42 ... love Splash Mountain (my favorite ride:lovestruc) BTMRR doesn't bother me at all.. I don't love EE but suck it up once a trip for my kiddos..TOT is ok..not bad at all...and I do NOT like RnR (me no likey going upside down:upsidedow.) All that being said...I LOVED Space Mountain. It is very zippy, can be jerky and I scream my tail off. It really is just about being in the dark and having no idea what comes next. I swear my kids favorite part of the the ride is listening to their mom scream like a nut case. ;) I rode it 2 times in a row in May and cannot wait to ride it again. :goodvibes

. I do not mind the dark or bumpiness but are there drops?

Well, it's a roller coaster, so of course it's going to go downhill ;)

There are a few "steep" drops that I would say are comparable to the bigger ones on BTMRR. They're probably not that big in real life, but since you can't see anything, they kind of come out of nowhere

It's basically a "wild mouse" ride. The drops are small, but there are a lot of them.

You could just tell yourself it's only 5 minutes or so out of your whole life and you can handle it for those 5 minutes.

One thing you do need to know is it's a two-seater vehicle, so if there are only two grandkids, either you have to ride alone or one of them does. That could be your "out."

You should be fine riding it. Just make sure you aren't sitting in the very front or very back.

Front = Can barely see anything in front of you, very scary.
Back = Basically out of your seat the whole time.

Just have fun and give your grandkids the time of their life! :thumbsup2

I apologize...

For some reason I remembered this as only a 2-seater, but it is a 3-seater, so you don't have that "out" anymore. Just sit in the middle between them and have a blast screamin' your head off.

I think it would actually be a really boring and simple ride if the lights were on. In my opinion the "biggest" drop is no where near BTMR! But it comes to you in the dark and you're not expecting it so it is a surprise. I think you will scream the whole way through it.....but I think you should do it for your grandsons cuz then you WILL be the coolest Grandma evah! :thumbsup2 And THAT'S what they'll remember!

:thumbsup2this. as a scardey cat myself, I think people who "make" others rides rides they are afraid of (or "guilt" them into it) are sadistic. you do what makes YOU comfortable.

that being said: big thunder is the perfect rollercoaster for me, so this might not apply to you. but there are trips I do SM, and trips I don't. I walk hubby through the line , then take the chicken ext (wish they wouldn't call it that) and meet him at his exit. I don't decide until the last minute.

but since the rehab, it seems to me you sit further down INTO the seats, which helps me feel safer.

I agree that if you do go you shoudl NOT sit int he back. I find it to be significantly rougher. Much smoother ride the further forward you go!

Not really any major drops, but rather lots of small drops with lots of turns.

Space Moutain is nothing but a kiddie coaster in the dark. There are no super drops or upside down twists. It is one of the first steel coasters and is nothing more than a kiddie ride at any other park in America. WDW is great at theming and make something bigger than it really is.

What are you scared of? A simple, but complex question.
