Space Mountain...to do or not to do? SO SCARED

try looking at the you tube videos & see if it is something that you could handle - there are even a couple that have the lights on - it is really a pretty simple roller coaster (no loops or corkscrews)

I second this: I am a big chicken, well for me really it's that I am not in control of the situation. but:

Last year , daredevil dd12 ( who has become this only this past year-before she was a chicken as well) she wanted to go on Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, BTMRR,etc.

So I actually did go to youtube and saw the one that has the lights on for space mountain and that helped a great deal. However, I find that I like rides better in the dark and I actually opened my eyes and was laughing.

Splash Mountain, I can really do without that again. We got stuck just for a little bit, some idiot in the boat behind us trying to get out near Slippin Falls:confused3 but we were soon on our way. that last drop I just didn't like, but once again it may be to i wasn't in control of the situation.

It depends . . . will the grandsons get to ride if you don't? I checked the ride info and anyone under 7 must be with an adult. So, if they need you to ride, I say you do it. It is just 2 minutes and 30 seconds. It is not my favorite ride, but I do ride it with my kids.
In any case, if they don't need you to ride, I don't think it is a lose/lose as long as you are prepared for some good-natured ribbing, it is just another fun memory of Disney World: "Remember when Grandma was to scared to ride Space Mountain?"

I was scared to death to ride Space Mountain. I skipped it our first three trips, then I decided to try it. It's not anything like I expected. It's in the dark so height isn't a factor, it's not overly fast & it doesn't do loops.

Try it! I think BTMR is wilder than Space Mtn.

It only reaches a top speed of 28 mph so if you have ever been on splash you can have solace in the fact that splash is faster on the drop at approx 40 mph...

Easier said than done, but I say close your eyes and go for it!

My mom is having the same issue, only with Splash. DD desperately wants her to ride it, but my mom is convinced that the drop will literally give her a fatal heart attack. She's still debating. :)

it's never good natured to tease someone about their fears. never.

OP, sometimes I ride it, sometimes not.
as I posted earlier, what helps me is telling myslef that it is TOTALY my choice, and I will decide when we get to the front of the line. that way I am not worried and fretting through the long line. (and it's really not bad, esp with the new seats)

now if I could only do the same with EE! have never ridden it. it's the height think on that one. but hubby knows MUCH better than to try to tease, cajole , guilt or anything else!!!!!

I have not been on Splash Mountain! Sounds like such a lovely ride till the horror at the end. I think I can brave it since it's only a few seconds though.

Made me laugh since it sounds so irrational...fatal heart attack, but I'm afraid of that too. I agree, close my eyes and go for it..it's kind of sad to have such fear :sad1:

They are 5 and 8 but Grandpa will ride with them! That would be too much pressure if their riding was dependent on me! :thumbsup2

. :)

that really isn't necessary on SM!:rotfl2:

unfortunately, I did take that advice once, on Tower of Terror. being terrified of heights, I didn't want to see out when the elevator doors opened, so I basically dept my eyes closed the whole time...... then LATER found out that I missed all the visual stuff in the corridors, ghosts, holograms, whatever (dont' know, didn't see them!)

so now.. my "I;ll do it just once, just to try it" doesn't really count, since I missed most of it. rats.

I think if you found BTMR scary Space Mountain will be too much for you. My mom hates roller coasters and was terrified.

I love roller coasters and it freaks me out sometimes - it's the darkness and the fact the the ride vehicles leave you pretty exposed.

Can they ride by themselves?

Space Moutain is nothing but a kiddie coaster in the dark. There are no super drops or upside down twists. It is one of the first steel coasters and is nothing more than a kiddie ride at any other park in America. WDW is great at theming and make something bigger than it really is.

I do remember loving the kiddie coasters as a child. I don't know what happened to me. Lol:rolleyes:

Ugh ...this is a wicked little ride. Fast and dark. I was screaming the whole time (especially at the beginning) in anticipation of the "drop" which I can never time right. It's fun though. I wish you the best. :rotfl:

Even if you don't ride SM your grand kids won't be disappointed, the fact that you're there at Disney World with them means the most. :goodvibes

I have the same fear with big roller coasters. In fact, if SM wasn't an indoor, in the dark coaster, I'd probably have issues with it, too...even though it isn't a "big" roller coaster.

that really isn't necessary on SM!:rotfl2:

:rotfl: Very true!

I suggest, do NOT look at the you tube videos of it with the lights on. there are NO BIG drops, just kinda fast and a lot of turns this way and that.

I vote do!

I was afraid to go on when I went with my son last year. I hadn't been on in 16 years and now have fibromyalgia but I promised myself I would not let fear stop me from Space mt. Or splash mt. I loved space mt it fast and FUN but is was really jerky which was a bit of a pain. Splash scares me more because I hate drops. Was proud I got on and kept my head up!

TOT, yetti and RR are off limits ;)
