Space bags

I need some advice. I have decided to try the space bags or whatever they are called. Are the ones that you roll as good as the ones that you vacuum out air? Also, how do you know what size to get? I mainly want it for clothes (adult size) and my pillows. How about books? I always bring a lot of books (fast reader), does it work for them? Thanks. Debby

For trips I use the small bags, have one for underwear (usually 5-6 sets), one for tops and one for shorts (I usually have more tops than shorts). I use them so I can get more space in my baggage since my son's (8) clothing also gets packed in my bag.

I use the bags that you roll, but there are newer ones that you can either roll or use the vacuum; I would get those. I have never had problems with my roll up bags, just be careful not to pack metal objects inside without wrapping them such as belt buckles have the piece that inserts inside the hole.

The larger bags would be good for pillow or larger items

Why would you want to use space bags for books? If you're thinking of water protection I would think a baggie is fine for books or magazines.

I guess I wasn't thinking straight about the books. I thought they might close tighter and take up less space. Debby

I just may have to invest in those. I have so much to pack and fit into the trunk of our car. We usually go in Dec/Jan so we have to pack for cold and hot weather. There are four of us and my 2yr old needs more than anyone with his 2 sets of clothes per day and diapers, wipes etc. The vacuum bags seem like they would work well but I don't think anyone wants to take a vacuum on vacation, LOL. They have the roll up bags on Ebay for pretty cheap too.

I read a post here last week about those space bags. Just to make you aware, if you compress your items too much, your suitcase may not be full, but weigh over the limit set by airlines, 50 lbs., I think. Then you will have to pay extra to get it on your flight. Don't do too good a job packing or it may cost you money.

I have found that large zip-loc's work really well for clothing items such as socks, underwear, tank-top shirts, kids clothes, etc. Just put the clothes in, zip it most of the way, roll the air out, and finish closing it. For those smaller things, the zip-loc's seem to work just as well as space bags, and cost a whole lot less!

And ZipLoc bags now come in a couple of EXTRA large sizes!

I just got my order of space bags this week. I was dissappointed by how small they were. I thought that the small bags would hold outfits for the 5 of us. I would do one per day, but they barely fit in the large bags. I have used ziplocks on all of my previous trips and they seem to work just as well. Now with the xl and xxl ziplock bags I think they would be more cost efficent.

I agree with the weight comment....you pack and think it's great--until you try to lift it!

This may be a dumb question, but where would you get a vacuum to use to repack at WDW?

I bought mine from QVC and they are great. I can't for teh life of me remember what they are called, and I am at work, so I can't check.

I have a couple of dozen in varrying sizes. I used them to pack away off season clothes (which is most of my winter stuff, since I live in Orlando now).

No vaccume needed, just roll the air out.

I've used them and they do actually work. I'd never fit all the clothes I need in my suitcase if I didn't have the space bags! I have the kind that roll. We don't fly to Disney, so luggage weight is not an issue for me (that's what DH is for ), but I also didn't have any problems with putting just about my whole wardrobe in those bags for my trip to Australia a few years ago!

I use them for the dirty clothes on the way home. That way there is a lot more room in the suitcases for all the new stuff!!!!

For those who try Spacebags, just be warned that the airlines are putting out new regulations on luggage weight. I just got an e-mail from Jet Blue telling me the new weight (70 pounds) and size limitations of luggage. If you go over, they will charge you.

So if you use them, you may want to weigh your bag before you leave home.
