Hey!

We're driving down to WDW in December and this will be our 3rd time doing so. Although our car is great, I would love to have to extra time flying.

We live in Long Island and Islip airport is so close, but the $$ difference b/w flying and driving is about $250. Would the extra hours and less hassle be worth that amount to you? Also, does anyone know of any promo codes for Southwest that would hopefully bring our cost down to the same for driving?

I figure with gas (600), tolls and food ($150), it will be about $750 to drive while I can spend $950 on flying. If I could get a discount code that would bring it down to the amount we've budgeted for driving, I'm sure DH would go for it.

$25 RT codes floating around for a couple of months that were supposed to expire on 8/1. I have read that SW extended the booking window. I've already given mine away but there is a sticky here that may help. Look for SWA Codes up top on the Transportation board.

Aaack! Missed that! Thanks!

$600 for gas from NY? The AAA fuel cost estimator told me it would be about $250 in fuel costs for me to drive my 24mpg car from Boston and I thought that was high. (glad I don't have an RV!)

Regardless, I'm with you on Flying verses driving. I'd much rather spend 6 hours between flying and wait times than 2 days driving. How much is one's sanity worth really? You might be able to bribe your DH with that. ;)

We are driving in November from Long Island also. According to the fuel coast estimator from AAA, it should only run about $245 round trip with my 2005 Dodge Caravan. You might want to recalculate. Are you going to be stopping overnight? Don't forget to budget for accomodations. :butterfly

I seriously don't know what happened. LOL So about $300 for gas. Maybe I was calculating the price of "I'd rather be flying" time?:thumbsup2 They put $2.72 for gas on there, but around me it's $2.87 right now and by the holidays, I'm sure it will be higher. We don't stop overnight. We'll take a few stops on the road and I definitely love to hit up the Crocs outlet in NC. Cracker Barrel is my favorite road-trip eatery and when you eat there, you always wind up picking up knick-knacks in the store, LOL!!:rotfl:

So, let's just say, $600 total road-trip cost. Hopefully, we can find the other $300 and just buy tickets on Southwest. I wish they let you pay bit by bit like Disney does. I would definitely pay for airfare at that point!!

We are also from Long Island and going in December. We are flying. McArthur is a great airport!

Enjoy your trip.

Do you want or need a vehicle when you get there? If so, count that amount in your total. If you fly would you do it on the day you were planning on leaving and returning or add the extra time to hotel and tickets if you leave on the day the car trip starts and ends. If so, add that to the cost.

Now you need to weight the time vs money cost.

As a fellow Long Islander I highly recommending flying from McArthur! It's soooooo easy! I really think the amount of time you'll save is worth it!

DH and I are going to WDW in October without the kiddos and then the whole family is going in December. Both times we're taking SW from McArthur!

We rarely need the car when we're there. We pretty much park it, and it stays in the same spot until we're ready to leave. We're planning to start driving down during the afternoon of 12/10/2010 so we can get there 24 hours later on 12/11/2010. If we flew, we'd just leave on the morning of 12/11/2010, I wouldn't include another night at Disney, that would just be more $$.

It seems flying is the way to go.

Flying would be great, but I don't have $965 to lay out in one shot. We're not using credit to pay for the trip so we're paying it off little by little. I happen to love that about Disney. Every paycheck, we set aside a certain amount and we get it done. If I could do the same thing with the tickets, I'd definitely be able to do it. Could I put the plane tix on a cc? Sure, but I'd rather leave that free for emergencies, incidentals, etc.

The only thing that I could hope for is that by the time we've paid off the trip (mid-Oct), we can set money aside for the driving trip. If the rates stay the same, we may be able to buy the tickets, but I won't know that until we get close and that's what worries me. These stupid plane prices fluctuate so much, but I will start putting extra away in the hopes that they'll stay the same and we can do it.
