We have tickets for our family to fly from Hartford to Orlando in October. We would now like to purchase 3 more tickets for our niece and her two children. The cheap seats on our flights are unavailable for 3 tickets but we can get two at the lowest price for the return flight. More expensive seats are available. Can we purchase 2 tickets at the lower price and one by itself? It would make itineraries of either 1 adult/1 child and one child alone or two children and 1 adult alone. Can this be done? Thanks!

Yes you definately can do this. I've done it with my own kids a few times. (When a good rate comes out I book for me, DH and DS and then call to see if the infant fare is cheaper for DD. Usually it isn't so I go back and get a seat for her with the discounted rate so she usually has her own ressie number)
If you check in at the airport, you just need to let them know they are on seperate reservations.
With the on-line check-in, originally everyone had to have their own reservation in order to print out boarding passes. (I'm pretty sure that has changed but we usually check in at the airport so I'm not 100%)

Yep- Did it last month w/ my kids. My mom, and aunt, on a separate reservation than the kids. No problem, no questions. I had the same concerns as you, but everything was fine.

I've done the same thing with both SW and Delta.

There has been many times when there were two or three tickets at the lower price and we needed four.

Some airline websites may still require that the credit card holder is one of the passengers, so make sure the single person you book by themselves has a credit card or check card in their name.

I booked my girls on a flight under thier own reservation, using my credit card. My mom used her card for her, and my aunt-sep reservation. My kids are 6, and 10- no credit card- no problem. I wasn't even flying w/ them, and still- no problem.

This was with SW, 3 weeks ago.
