Can anyone familiar with this help me plan a trip? What to do first? Where to stay? How many days. Which airport to fly into? Will I need a rental car or is other transportation available? Traveling with two kids ages 10 and 3. Which attractions require whole days, more than one day, half day. Where to eat, shop, etc,

Hi there -

I am not a Disneyland expert by any means. I've been there a lot -- but years and years ago. My husband recently found out that he has a business trip there in 3 weeks, so my 7 year old and I are thinking about joining him. I've done some checking and noticed that the Southern CA CityPass 2011 is better than the one being offered in 2012. It is a few dollars cheaper and it also includes the San Diego Zoo. 2012 only includes 3 days at Disneyland, 1 day at Universal (which ends up being 2 with Buy 1, get 1 free) and also 1 day at Sea World.

For my daughter and myself, we'd rather have 6 days at Disneyland / California Adventure (Park Hopper is on sale by a few dollars) + 2 days at Universal for around $100 more than the cost of 2 City Passes (give or take a couple dollars.) I don't think we'll be heading to San Diego, and we'd rather have more time at Disneyland.

I found $99 tickets, multiple airlines, via LAX. I am doing my car rental via making a Priceline deal but have not yet done that. Hotel - there is a Holiday Inn Express that is close enough to Disneyland that we can walk back and forth. That will make it nice for Extra Magical Mornings - we get one with our pass.

I think we are doing the Aerial breakfast or lunch. My daughter has done the full package at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Disney World. This time we will take a dress and shoes with us - if I can find some with such short notice - to save some $. She loved it last time!

Do you want to plan around using the City Pass? Each location will take a full day, well with DL 3. If you add on the SD Zoo, it is most of a day, but you can see some other SD sites in the evening. The Safari park is a whole day when you include getting out to it.

I would generally say end on DLR. Some people like to start at DL and then end on DL.

Since going to SD for at least Sea World, you could fly to the SD airport, and head north flying out of an airport in LA. Or make a loop flying in and out of where ever is cheapest.

You will probably want to have a rental car to see all those sites.

I last used the Southern California City Pass in 2007 with a DD8 and DS6. We flew in to San Diego and stayed for 3 days. We went to Sea World (1 day), the zoo (1 day), and spent a day on the beach. On the 4th day, we drove to Anaheim and then spent 3 full days in the parks before driving back to San Diego to catch our flight home. We never went to Universal and the So Cal City Pass was still worth it. The driving was easy. Traffic was what I expected--read not difficult (I lived in Seattle for 5ish years so the traffic didn't bother me).
